Wind And Shadows In Late Fall.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Wind and Shadows 110420” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Sol closes his sleepy eyes a little sooner each day and the shadows grow longer. Angry winds shake the forest releasing a blizzard of drying leaves throughout my mountains. The days of the sun are well behind me now and every day the splendor of fall is washed away in the cold rain. And yet here in the shelter of my little home between two mountains a few colorful leaves still cling to branches. They flutter like triumphant little flags waving in defiance of the coming changes. The beech leaves have faded from a rich golden tone to light tan and that is sign for me to prepare my hearth for quiet days by the fire. The season always makes me reminisce of my childhood when the soft purple light fell across the land and a heavy Appalachian quilt was a fine winter cocoon for a day of laying on the couch and watching old reruns on TV. Old black and white westerns provided a connection that spanned the decades between myself and the boy my father was on those days that we watched together. I think about how much things have changed. In those days the fireplace was a heavy iron stove fueled by oak and hickory. In the mornings the first person awake would rekindle the fire from the leftover coals. It wasn’t so odd for a pre-teen to have that responsibility. I remember carefully placing the smaller pieces of wood into place with old newspapers and junk mail and soon the heat from the coals would catch them on fire. As the fire grew we could add a few big pieces of wood. Late fall weekends were special because we could put a pot of stew on that old wood stove and let it slowly simmer all day. The whole house smelled wonderful and by dinner time we just couldn’t wait to dip out a bowl.

Today, my gas fed ceramic log fireplace comes on by itself and the stews are made in 45 minutes in a computerized crock but that feeling of shelter is still the same. I can even broadcast old black and white shows to my smart TV from my smartphone while I lay back in my recliner with my pup on my lap as the wind and shadows shake the leaves outside my window.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Rhythm Of Change

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “A Quiet Path 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool winds rustle the golden leaves along the quiet country lane. I tread softly as I walk through litter listening for the tell tale sounds of scampering feet among the boles. Off in the distance I hear the warning of my quarry. Two slow squawks followed by a quick bark. The universal signal that mankind has entered the forest. I look up just in time to see a bushy tail dart behind the tree tops and vanish into the wilderness. You can almost never surprise a squirrel. In response to his alarm a downy woodpecker emerged from a hidden perch and rocketed out of sight. It’s just me and the wind now. Any other animals have heeded that squawking and ran for cover. The ever present breeze plays with the golden foliage making it flutter and dance to the soft rhythm of changing climate. The tempo builds as the creator directs from above and one by one the golden leaves take flight to complete the cycle of their dance in the air only to end with a gentle touchdown along the edges of the road. The breeze comes to a lull for a moment and then a sudden crescendo of gales picks the leaves back up and sweeps them away for the next performance. The natural life is never truly still for long. The world is ever changing in a great cycle of renewal and it is up to us to learn our part in the dance. Once we do that we can see that what may have seemed to be chaos was simply an order of complexity not yet appreciated.

Take a deep breath and give into the rhythm and listen to God’s voice in your heart and he will always guide your steps in this dance.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

November Crossing 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November Crossing 111720bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cold November wind roars by spitting trace amounts of snow. Most of the fall color has been stripped away by Old Man Winter’s icy breath. By chance I was able to make a trip to the Salmon Run area of Summersville Lake. Here in area only accessible to me during winter pool I gaze across the water and consider the landscape that once was. A flood control lake such as this is almost an aquatic desert. The stumps of a forest long gone rest on stone and muck like tombstones. The discarded Christmas trees dot the landscape behind me on what was once a park like meadow.

Before me lays the remaining essence of the lake. Within its depths small country lanes cross a murky landscape of abandoned foundations left by those who tamed a rugged wilderness. The bridge stretches across the moody skys like an angel’s highway going from mountain to mountain. And yet here in this melancholy domain of the dark months there is peace and solitude. A place where one can escape from the tick of a clock and imposing thoughts of the outside world. Occasionally I hear the calls the crows reminding me that this is their domain until Spring when the new light is strong and life awakens once more.

My annual pilgrimage to this particular place has become another marker in my natural calendar. At the time of this writing it’s only 4 weeks and 5 days until the sun awakens and begins to push back the shadows. This is point when the forest sleeps and renews itself for the splendor of Spring. This is the season for mankind to enjoy the steam from a thermos of coffee and began to plan for gardens, tinker in shops and enjoy the warmth of the hearth with loved ones. It is a time to draw stories from the depths of imagination and send an inner light into the world. Dreams are made in the downtime of the dark months and it’s from those dreams we shape the reality of our lives. And with that final thought I must end this post.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Become A Beacon

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Summersville Lighthouse 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The tower stretches out to touch the marbled sky like a gateway between heaven and earth. Ever changing winds pluck the colors from the trees and fill the world with delightful splashes of fall hues. That familiar lamp which once stood as a sentinel against the darkness in my childhood has been given new life. In the nights before GPS the beacon guided lone pilots through starless nights and comforted young boys when it’s luminescence swept through the bedroom window confirming the absence of monsters in the near vicinity.

Now the lamp looks out over the highway and sweeps away the shadows.

My final thought for this post is that “Where there is light there is hope.” Friends, each one of you is a beacon in your own life. Stand tall and the darkness cannot resist you.

Good night and be blessed throughout your days.

Where Worlds Meet

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Where Worlds Meet 110420” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Come and sit with me for a moment and we’ll go down by the water’s edge. Here in this place where worlds meet and all that exists is common to mankind. The sun brightens all visions and wind fills all with breath. Listen closely to the water’s song as she gently hums in concert with the stones she keeps. Small fish dance and splash playfully as they make their way downstream to the great river that they know only from the stories of their ancestors. They’ve spent their whole lives in these shoals. Some of them have been here for months! But the time of the great migration is at hand and they must find their destiny in the deep water.

Alder, elm, birch and yellow poplars along with their kith and kin peer down into shoals for a last glimpse of their own faces contrasted against the deep blue of sky before settling in for their own winter’s nap.

I’ve said many times that I believe a moment of peace is as important to health as diet and exercise. I hope that you have enjoyed this moment because that’s it for tonight. Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
