Enjoying The Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “New England Asters 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

My big blue truck carries me down the quiet country lane. The October day is mild. Not too warm but warm enough to enjoy the fresh air that flows through the open window. The ditches on either side of the road are lined with the most beautiful little purple flowers. I tend to subconsciously think of Spring as the season of flowers as the mountain wakes from it’s long winter nap and while it looks like there’s more variety in the types of flowers in Spring Fall certainly has an abundance of Asters. Even better is the way that the purple and blue are offset by the red, yellow and orange of the changing leaves. Right now our mountains look as though a rainbow collapsed across the landscape and stained the forest. Sometimes I’m asked about what my favorite season is and I have to think about it. Each has it’s own special something that touches my soul. When it comes right down to it I guess that I’d have to say that my favorite season is “Today”. Life is the moment that we have and it’s ever changing. The colors of Fall will only last a few short days before the wind and rain washes over God’s canvas and clears it for the next work. So don’t spend that ever fleeting second on things that don’t enhance your life in some way. Instead, set aside a little time to shut down the electronic world and breathe in the real world outside your door. The wind, sun and rain speak to you just as loud if you listen and their words are peaceful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Grand Dame Of The Meadow.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Crowned 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

With the changing of the season nature robes herself in golden tones. The black-eyed Susan which started as a humble yellow flower growing near a road has transformed herself into a Grand Dame of the meadow. She even sports a golden crown to the seasons ending celebration of color. Soon the season of shadows will begin and the long slumber will fall upon nature leaving only a few evergreens to stand as sentinels against the darkness. But for now the flame of the sun is still reflected in her petals and the crown she earned. She knows better than to waste her flame on the fear of changing seasons for each moment spent in dread is a living-time wasted.

Enjoy the moment you are living in, rest well tonight and be blessed throughout your days.

Enjoy Every Last Drop

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Plains Coreopsis 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The gentle October winds gently shake the field near the Battle Run Campground at Summersville Lake. Small grasshoppers spring into the air and take wing through the drying stems of fading wildflowers. Occasionally a Sulphur Butterfly flutters through checking each bloom for the disappearing nectar. They’ll need every precious drop of energy to make the long journey south. Along with the butterflies Fenches,Chickadees and Wrens forage the tall weeds of the spillway. Some search for insects and others pick seeds from stems that held the wildflowers a few short days ago. The small ones are silent as they feed but in the distance the caw of crows carry on the breeze reminding us that they own the lake now. Gone are the skiers and swimmers and the lower waterline now draws more attention from fishermen trolling the banks in hopes of raising a monster from the inky depths. The soft down of thistle floats gently by and turns skyward. In my inner child’s imagination I see it fly to heaven above and land on a cloud at the feet of an angel who will guard it well until the Spring planting. The seasons flow like a river and nobody can hold it all in their hands. Here in the waning water days of the sun I learned to enjoy the last light rather than mourn its loss. Light to us humans is like the last drops of nectar for the butterflies. We should take in as much as we can to carry us through our journey.

And with this thought I close tonight’s post. Enjoy your time and be blessed throughout your days.

The First Fall Leaves Bring Childhood Memories

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Dogwood In Scarlet 92520” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The gentle days of Fall see the first of the change. In my part of the Appalachian Mountains we’ll see peak color in about two or three weeks. In a good color year the forest looks as though the mountains were painted to match the sunset. Brilliant leaves fill the streams in a parade of reds, yellows and golds. Among the first to turn are the dogwoods. Almost overnight the lush green leaves turn to velvety red. Small biscuits form on the twigs in promises of a beautiful Spring day when the sleeping forest will burst into bloom. I’ll be watching these buds all winter and waiting for signs of renewal.

Fall tends to bring out the kid in me which isn’t really all that hard. I look at leaves floating in the creek and I’m instantly taken back to carefree days when my brother and I hike down to the creek and race the leaves in the eddies like little boats. A stack of pebbles on the banks served as cannon balls on days that our leaf boats were manned by pirate hunters. We always found a treasure after sinking the leaves. Sometimes broken glass worn smooth by the current served as gemstones and the native painted sandstone pebbles made for good coinage. A few other things that make Fall a great time of to be I kid in mountains is the huge pile of leaves. Those were the days when Evil Knievel was at the highlight of his career. Young boys, bicycles and a pile of leaves and we had the best stunt show on the farm We raced down the dirt road and used an exposed root for a ramp and landed in the leaves bike and all. Even now as I focus my lens on the scarlet Dogwood leaves I have the urge to find a rake and pile as many as I can and with one giant leap land deep into my childhood.

Contentment On A Cool September Day

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pipevine Swallowtail 90420a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cooling air sweeps through the old hay field gently rocking the tall purple ironweed. It’s little harder to pick up the sweet smell of the bloom on cooler, dryer days but it’s still there. The older pipevine Swallowtail has no difficulty at all in finding her favorite meal as as she softly floats in on the breeze. Her battered wings and loss of dark scales tells me that her journey is nearly over. She’s already deposited her eggs on the pipevine in faith that her multiple broods will emerge in Spring and fill the hills with vibrant colors and joyful airial dances. With profound contentment she feeds. The fluttering of wings reminds me of a puppy wagging it’s tail as I watch through the lens of my camera. The window of my big blue truck provides the perfect cover to enjoy her beautiful routine as she explores each floret in the cluster. She seems to have no fear of me. Even though I’m using the long lens I was able to get close enough that I had to physically back away in order to focus.
With grace she works her way around the bloom lifts herself into the air. Before she departed to her next goal she flew so close to the truck window that I thought she come inside. At the last second she pulled up and circled hood a few times as if saying goodbye before riding the breeze to the far side of the pasture. Perhaps in Spring her children will also pay me a visit.
