Of Light And Flow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November’s Window 111121a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool mists embrace the mountain as I sit quietly and allow my spirit to listen a while. The little spot on the edge of my property is my low sanctuary but higher up on the mountain is my high sanctuary. This is the place where I learned to allow the outside world to drift away with the misty rain and center myself in nature. The scent of earth is carried in the mists and the sound of small creatures playing in the forest floods my attention for a little while. The soft omnipresent glow of the sun lights up each remaining leaf and in that light the forest is transformed into a world with no less beauty than staind glass. The concept of flow was recently reintroduced to me. It’s a surprisingly simple concept and yet difficult to define. And yet in these secluded spots the flow of life is found. And as difficult as I find it to explain I know it when it’s there. One person said that it’s not the river but the current within the water. So for the moment I’ll say that it’s not the light but the illumination that defines flow in this moment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Strong Stick To Carry Into The Great Wherever

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn’s Enchantment 111021” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Crisp mountain air brings me back to carefree days of roaming my grandfather’s forest in my youth. The stand of timber on the edge of the back pasture held a lot of my adventures. The black walnuts there were old and somewhat twisted and gave me the feeling of being in an enchanted forest from an adventure movie or novel. The ground in that area was always covered by clubmoss and other ferns and that just enhanced the otherworldly feeling. The wildlife was always rich there as well. Squirrels, rabbits and deer as well as hawks and owls seemed to gravitate there. On crisp fall days I didn’t have to worry too much about snakes and could explore without having to watch every single step. An old stand of dogwoods in the area always provided a stout staff. When dogwoods die in the wilds only the parts that are in contact with the ground tend to rot and the rest of it cures in the open air. If you find one that’s the right size you can usually just pluck it from the ground. To bring the stick to the right size all that’s needed is to wedge it between two living trees and lever it back and forth until it breaks. When the air is cool and leaves are at full color I always get the urge to return to my old stomping ground and cut a good stick so I can just head off into the great wherever looking for what may come.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Touch Of Gold

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “A Touch Of Gold 102921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The evening rain comes as cold mist that settles on darkening hills. Sometimes I think that if were blind that I could tell what season it is by the smell of the rain. A Spring rain smells fresh and sweet. A Summer rain smells sweet too but different. A Fall rain smells earthy with a hint of spice. The changing leaves are what gives the Fall rain that particular scent. The more they turn, the stronger the rain smells. The photo was taken several days ago when the colors just beginning to peak and now they’re well underway. Nature’s gift of gold and amber are the most prominent tones near my home. My own little golden treasure that get to enjoy for a few short weeks.

Believe it or not the was a time when a single leaf gave simple handwritten notes the same spending value as printed money. These came in the form of promisary notes. For example, a person with timber on their land might agree to supply a “x” number of firewood in exchange for a farmer’s grain. But in seasons where a large amount of either product may not be practical to transport or store notes would be made up in denominations with the exchange rate agreed upon. To prevent counterfeit notes a leaf would be used as a watermark. Each person would then take half of note with half of the leafprint. When it came time to collect what was promised the halves would be matched up and if the patterns lined up then each knew that it the original agreement. But the real utility of the system is that if the notes were given serial numbers and made in exchangeable amounts. Say, a bag of flour in exchange for a day’s worth of firewood then the timber man could deliver several days of firewood, receive a single bag of flour and a few notes. Then instead of hauling loads of firewood all over town he could barter the extra notes to other tradesmen for whatever product they had and the notes were then cashed in with the farmer. Of course a good negotiator would take payment in part product and part notes. So our timberman would have notes for more than grain. He’d be carrying notes from the farmer, the Butcher and perhaps a blacksmith along with a manageable load of firewood or other products that he’d traded for.

That’s a highly simplified example and I may have confused a few details about how it actually worked but the individual vein patterns on the leaves were what gave confidence in the system.

Today the value of the leaves are mostly aesthetic and the changing colors are my favorite part of Fall.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Listening To The Voices Of The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn’s Call 102621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Forest has a voice of its own that’s beyond the sounds of songbirds and insects. When they’re silent music still comes from the mountains. The breathy whistle of the wind in the trees, the rhythm of falling leaves or rain depending on the season and the creaking groans of wood as it stretches and twists all come together during the peak color season. It’s on days like this that the mountains sing and tell stories to those who sit quietly and listen. Some of the oaks tell me about how much it tickles as the squirrels run up and down their trunks. The maples nod in agreement as golden leaves flow from their crowns adding more rhythm to the music. The oldest elm on the mountain whispers of the secret owls nest in the hollow of her ancient bole and how it makes her feel needed so she guards the nest well. The birches tell me how they hold back the mountain in their roots and keep the big rocks from rolling downhill. These and many other stories are shared in the fading light of late October as I sit on the tailgate of the big blue truck and just listen.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Minutes Beneath The Dogwood In Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Crimson And Glory 101921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The smell of fallen leaves fill the light breeze in my Appalachian Mountains. For me autumn is such a bittersweet season. I love the lower humidity and beautiful spectrum of colors that sweep across my mountain home but I know that soon the sun will take it’s yearly nap and shadows will blanket the hills. Even now some of trees have drifted into their deep sleep. The upside of course is that with the leaves down the birds, squirrels and other wildlife is much easier to spot. As I looked upward into the canopy hoping to spot a bushy tail sitting still and pretending to be a knot on a limb I did spot the tiny biscuit shaped buds on the twigs. I know that by the number and size of the buds that this tree is already preparing to give us a beautiful Spring in 2022. It’s a wonderful reminder that our blessings are prepared way ahead of our needs. And that’s a comforting thought indeed.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
