The Groundhog’s Thoughts

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Thinking Spot 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

“Come sit with me for a while.” The groundhog said as I softly tread through the drying leaves. He glanced over his shoulder to look for my reaction. Having nothing better to do at the moment I obliged the old fellow. We sat in silence for a few minutes listened closely to birds chatter. “It’s good when there’s lots of noise. It means that there’s no predators.” The kindly old woodchuck spoke. I nodded in agreement and waited for him to continue. He commented on the changes in leaves while gnawing on the acorns scattered about the base of our log and sniffed the wind. “The changes are coming. I can already smell the frost.” He spoke as he looked at me with sleepy eyes. I had to agree once more as I pulled my jacket a little tighter. He chewed another acorn and looked around a bit. “This is my thinking spot. I come here after a long day of foraging and try sort out the things that are important for a groundhog. Which fields to visit for the best herbs and seeds. What spots are good to hide from the coyotes and wildcats etc. A groundhog’s life can get complicated like that. And I have discovered that when I sit quietly I’m a pretty good thinker.” I tried to hide my amusement but I realized that what he was actually telling me was that in order to do well it was good to not be overwhelmed by the problem and that if I slow down and think about it the solution was already prepared. We just need to recognize it. Before I comment the Groundhog rose up from the log and stretched. Stifling a yawn he looked at me and said, “Good night and I’ll see you in February.” He then made his way to his burrow through the forest floor.

Rest And Recharge

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Fall Drive 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The quiet lane stretches out through the old battlefield. Hills that once shuddered in roar of cannon fire now hold peace and tranquility for the weary mind. The main season for the park is now over and soon the gates will close for winter. The deer will play in the sprawling fields and rest under the picnic shelters. But here in the gap is a chance to stroll beneath the beautiful Appalachian Fall leaves and recharge the spirit. The time for sweat and toil has ended and the period of rest has begun.

Rest well Friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Enjoying The Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “New England Asters 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

My big blue truck carries me down the quiet country lane. The October day is mild. Not too warm but warm enough to enjoy the fresh air that flows through the open window. The ditches on either side of the road are lined with the most beautiful little purple flowers. I tend to subconsciously think of Spring as the season of flowers as the mountain wakes from it’s long winter nap and while it looks like there’s more variety in the types of flowers in Spring Fall certainly has an abundance of Asters. Even better is the way that the purple and blue are offset by the red, yellow and orange of the changing leaves. Right now our mountains look as though a rainbow collapsed across the landscape and stained the forest. Sometimes I’m asked about what my favorite season is and I have to think about it. Each has it’s own special something that touches my soul. When it comes right down to it I guess that I’d have to say that my favorite season is “Today”. Life is the moment that we have and it’s ever changing. The colors of Fall will only last a few short days before the wind and rain washes over God’s canvas and clears it for the next work. So don’t spend that ever fleeting second on things that don’t enhance your life in some way. Instead, set aside a little time to shut down the electronic world and breathe in the real world outside your door. The wind, sun and rain speak to you just as loud if you listen and their words are peaceful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Living In Your Purpose

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sweet and Sunny 90820a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sunshine fills the little valley with it’s creeks and meadows alive with the buzzing of tiny wings. Her work is not labor. The secret to her diligence is not in discipline to do that which is undesirable but the desire to do that which is natural. I often consider that many of the problems of the artificial world that controls so much of our lives is rooted in methods that go against the natural flow of life. A single bee weighs .00025 of a pound and over the course of it’s lifetime it will produce a tablespoon of honey. How much work does this represent? A honeybee lives between 122 and 152 days and will visit 5000 flowers per day to produce enough honey to sweeten a single cup of tea. And she does this with a happy attitude.

They say that if you can get paid to do what you love then you’ll never work a day in your life. My observation is that if you are living in your purpose then you’ll enjoy what you’re doing and the rest is just circumstance.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Bright Spot In My Day

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Rust & Reclamation 100620cs” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old weathered fence posts, rusted wire and wildflowers hold a special place in my heart. The elements of a world engulfed in the flow of time slowly returns to their raw forms. The steel wire was once black sand rich in iron oxide. The fence posts in their raw from grew from the rich humus to which they return. But lest we think that all is decay and entropy time also brings renewal. The flowers provide a bright spot. All along the old fence the tiny asters bloom. The old rusted wire fence will provide shelter from the groomers blades and support against the high winds as they twist their way up through woven wires. They have also been observing the flow of time. Waiting for the days when rain is gentle and sun is not too hot. The tiny flowers will last late into the season and a few will still bloom throughout the mild winter in my little slice of Appalachia. Honeybees do not hibernate and so the scant blooms will be important as survival food for those days that are warm enough for bees to fly. In my own yard I still had a handful of asters in bloom when the first Spring Beauties and crocus opened. So for me the asters symbolize hope in the promise that God will have what I need when I need it.

Hope is the thought for tonight friends. Be blessed throughout your days.
