Autumn Crossing

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Autumn Crossing” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

A slow drizzle of rain floats through the hills. It’s just enough rain to bring out the color of the leaves along the Kanawha River. I know by the mood of the clouds that the winds are well on their way. The high winds that come about this time of year just after the color peaks strips the leaves from the trees and scatters the fall colors. I have one chance to catch them before this happens. The curved railroad bridge between Alloy and Deepwater has always been one of my favorite subjects and I’m actually ahead of schedule for my morning commute so I pull the big blue truck onto the berm and try to get as far off of the road as possible. When I opened the door of the truck the smell of the rain mingled with my morning coffee and invigorated my soul. I only have a few minutes to grab a handful of frames so I got right to work. The gracefully curved bridge with it’s rustic feel mirrored in the Kanawha River was the perfect subject for catching the colors of fall on the Kanawha River. I could spend all day exploring different angles and settings but it the day job that pays the bills. So, I tuck my cameras away and grip the steel cable as take one more breath of fresh before moving on to the next opportunity.

Connecting The Circles

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Gauley Bridge In Onyx” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

My big blue truck rolls to a stop at the three rivers. A soft breeze flows down the mountain and gently shakes the leaves. A deep slow breath released me from the day’s cares as I listen to the birds chattering in the undergrowth. Bridges symbolize transition making them perfect spots to shift attitude away from the corporate culture and back into real life. If I’m still enough I can pick out the individual birds and hear the rivers gently lapping at the rocks on shore. I close my eyes and I can feel the direction of the sun on my skin. Up on the mountain the birds fall silent as a buck strolls through browsing the leaves. A crow gives three quick caws behind my as he flies through to alert the others of my presence in the empty parking lot. The world is made of concentric circles and they all connect if you can just push back the noise and let them speak to you. It only takes a few minutes to regain my center and clear away the mental clutter. I climb back up into my big blue truck and head home with a renewed sense of peace.

A Life In The Day

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Sunshine And Iron” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Daisies have always been a symbol of innocence to me. The bright yellow centers take me back to my childhood memories of carefree days spent exploring the world in warm sunshine.

The innocence of a child is something that should remain as a part of our innermost being throughout our lives. I’ve had more than one senior citizen speak to me about the desire to get out and explore. Even though they were in their 90s I could still see the child in their eyes. I have the recollection of one elderly man on the shore of the lake skipping stones on the water with his great grandchild. He was in his full mind and fully appreciating a simple blessing of an unfettered life.

I have come to understand that the very young and the very old share the ability to see themselves as fully as much a part of this world as the wilderness around them. They’re not restrained by schedules or complicated responsibility for keeping the world turning. They get to be what they truly are.

For the rest of us the desire to experience life is still there it’s just entangled in the demands of the system. However, when you can slip away for even just a few minutes it’s a powerful enrichment to your day and therefore your life. We have roughly a month or so ago of summer left in the northern hemisphere. I encourage you to take a break from the complicated responsibly of making the world function and add a little more living to your lifetime.

Blue Skies And Iron Ribbons Ahead

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Blue Skies And Iron Ribbons”Ahead” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The warm summer air flows through the cab of my big blue truck as I wind my way through the Appalachian Mountains. I have been taking an alternate route to my day job due to construction and while it adds a few minutes to my commute the change of scenery has been pleasant. A few mornings ago I happened to leave with enough time to diverge from the main road and enjoy a few minutes of peace near the tracks. The birds are still having their morning chorus and the traffic was light enough to give me that sense of solitude my spirit craves so often. Most of the spring flowers are gone and the fall flowers are just getting started here. Even though there are houses just on the other side of the trees the feeling that I get is that the world has been abandoned.

I gaze along the tracks which beckon me forward into an unending journey as they seem disappear into the forest. The morning mist still givers above the trees in contrast to the flawless blue sky. I’m torn between the desire to sprout wings and rise into the deep blue eternity above the trees and the desire to follow the iron ribbons that stretch out before me. Being an earthbound soul the later choice wins by default. However, the tracks will have to wait for another day. Not only am I bound to the stone and clay beneath my feet but I am also tied to the ticking of a clock. One last gaze into the serene and I must climb back up into the big blue truck and begin to head back into the city.

Into The Mountains

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Into The Mountains” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I stand again in the middle of the two tracks looking towards home. The long day of being on the road is nearly over and I crave comfort of my recliner and a home cooked meal. As the storm passes beyond the river the high hills shield me from the ominous clouds and howling wind. The big blue truck seems to know it’s way through the winding road like a faithful horse in days gone by. The engine races as I round the last curve and roll into the driveway. Before I even insert the key into lock I can hear my little buddy Scout baying out his welcome song. The door opens and he brings his favorite toy to share. The warm smile of my wife’s engaging eyes let’s me know that I’m not just at my house. I’m home.
