The warm June sun stirs the insects and my guardian barn swallows patrol the yard. With excellent timing they overtake the horseflies making it a little more comfortable to be outside. From my office window I noticed the crimson specks starting to appear on the edge of the forest. Last year the birds got most of my black raspberries but I can’t really be upset since they got most of the biting pests too. But now I enter a phase that’s a bit like torment. I have to wait for the berries to be ripe.
As I was growing up warm brambles ( blackberry, raspberry, wineberry and Logan berry were a true joy on a hot day. We would either work or play in the hot sun but in the times when you could reach one before the birds it was a thirst quencher.
Right now I see several that are just starting to turn while others are stii white almost. But these canes are only the first to turn. I have others that are still green. Picking Brambles is a lesson in having patience. The careless with scars and torn clothing. But it’s easy to have patience while picking. It’s getting to harvest that gives me the fits. After all, the waiting is the hardest part.
