The hot afternoon sun floods over my mountain stirring the scent of the nectar into the humid air. My Hibiscus grove is alive with colorful wings that dance and flicker among blooms. The mother tree was one that only gave blue flowers but her offspring are blue, white and pink. The flowers seem to fill with light just as one might fill a glass with water. The female Spicebush Swallowtail has had a busy day visiting and pollinating the blooms. She’ll fly many more miles before she folds her wings and turns her tasks over to the nightshift. Gently she sails in as if riding the sunbeam itself. She takes the ambrosia of the sun warmed nectar as she explores the flower. Her life is short but sweet. Her entire existence may only be a little over a month. Who could blame her for enjoying every second of the light that bathes her or every sweet drop that she can sip?

Mostly it’s the Pipevine and Spicebush Swallowtails but there’s a few Tiger Swallowtail and occasionally I see a Zebra Swallowtail. The trick is to encourage or plant the plants they host on and then make sure that they have plenty of nectar to feed on. Most adult butterflies are not as picky about their food as they are which plant they lay eggs on.
