A Childhood View Of Ground Pine

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Ground Pine 10521a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The damp forest never really sleeps. The trees do but the rest of forest is bustling with life. The ground pine is a constant companion for the Appalachian. As a child I would lay down on forest floor and pretend that I was an explorer like Indiana Jones trekking my way through the tiny jungle. Broken sticks only a couple of inches long became action figures and piles of rocks for an ancient temple. Sometimes there were dinosaurs in the form of a salamander that wandered lazily onto the scene. The red efts could be dragons that you had to follow all the way to a hidden treasure. I also remember a game that involved running through a patch of ground pine that was in spore such as these and trying to make it all the way through without a cloud of spores rising up from the strange looking cones. The days of childhood play may be long gone but I still have the urge to simply crawl into a patch of ground pine and let my imagination go wild when I see it.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Conversation With The Babbling Brook

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Babbling Brook 10521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cold winter mists settle on bare branches across the mountains. The water collects and pools into droplets that find their way to the stream. Soon tiny trickles join and wind their way to river. I sat quietly in forest and listened to the voice of the water as it told me of all the sights it witnessed on it’s journey. The oaks and Beech are sleeping deeply now but laurels never rest. And in the shade of the laurels a doe lays with her belly swelling up full of new life. The stream is anxious to see the innocent play of the fawn. Will it run and splash and play. New legs are so full of excitement. And just today an otter emerged from the bank and rubbed his sleepy eyes. With a few playful bounds he slipped into the shallow and slid the length of a football field downstream only to run back up the mountain and do it again. The Brook confesses that she too has children under her stones as tiny dragonfly larvae wait for the light to call them from the water to spread their wings for the first time ever and become masters of the breeze. I listened to these tales and many more until the urgency of my day called me back to the big blue truck and my next destination.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Things Are Just Ducky #15 George and Tilly’s Day In The Sun

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “With You At My Side 122920a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

George and Tilly swam along the edges of the sun filled lake as they foraged the edges. Occasionally they would find a morsel or two and the humans brought scraps of this and that. Winter wasn’t too harsh on the lake and where the water met the forest there was always something in season. Today however was particularly quiet. Only a few humans were there early in the morning and they unloaded boats to take them out to the deep where the large fish lay on the bottom. George and Tilly had the shallows to themselves. As they paddled around the songbirds were in full chorus and George looked at his bride with delightful content. Then he began began to swim slow circles around her and before it was over the game became a sort of dance in tune with the sounds of the lake. They moved in graceful arcs and created beautiful patterns on the surface of the water. Sometimes they circled each other and other times they moved in parallel to the tune that only birds can hear. As the dance ended they moved to the shore and in the fashion accustomed to ducks stamped artful patterns in the mud with their webbed feet. The breeze was very light and the afternoon sun was warm. George nestled down in the newly formed firm spot in the mud and Tilly cuddled up close. They had all the world at their wings but most of all they had each other. And that was all they needed to be content.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Forgotten Tomorrow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Forgotten Tomorrow 122920bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

If I close my eyes and listen with my inner ear I can still hear the voices. The voices of people calling out orders, conversations at break time and the preshift prayer for safety. When your job is to dig deep or run the big machines on a highwall you tend to be a little more conscious of mortality. A few weeks ago I told you about my one and only day working on a strip mine and it happened just a little ways “down yonder” from where I took this photo. At the time I thought that there would never be an end to it. I helped as hired muscle but after that the real miners came behind me and pulled light from darkness. The coal that they harvested went to power plants and steel mills. It’s very possible that some of it would have made it from West Virginia to California. But that seems like a lifetime ago now. The voices are only echoes in the cosmetic moment we call time and the mountain has a way of reclaiming what’s her’s.

The ground heaves and throws and the grass spreads across the landscape to bind steel. The trees come next to sure up those bindings with roots that bend, break and swallow iron and steel. Heavy beams are slowly pushed aside like children’s toys. In God’s creation that which is idle is cast aside to make room for renewal.

Image Titled “The Forgotten Tomorrow 122920b”.

It’s given to mankind to subdue the land but to land its own charge is to be wild. Without consistent effort all that is left is a mystery for some future archeological explorer to find the bands of steel and marvel for the world that was. And for Chandra, here are your trees growing in the railway that you asked to see. 🙂

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Things Are Just Ducky #14 A Day At Winter Pool

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Mallard On Bronze 122920a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The midmorning sun painted the lake a beautiful bronze hue as George the Mallard enjoyed a winter swim. With his feathers in full fluff Old Man Winter’s icy hands couldn’t touch him. Not even in the cold lakes and ponds of his Appalachian Mountain home. He and his wife Tilly had grown accustomed to the people on the lake. It was even fun when the big boats sped by and created a huge wake. George and his new friends turned it into a game to see who could paddle their way over the ripples first. But the winter was more tranquil and flock shrank a little as the geese moved to their Southern waters and some of his friends spread out a little. George spent his winter days drifting in shallows and occasionally accepting crumbs from the locals who came to explore the bare rocks and abandoned foundations of the lake at winter pool. He watched as they boldly explored the exposed caves where the monster catfish sleeps in summer. If they’d ever actually seen it they may not be so bold as to disturb it’s lair. He marveled at how the humans would climb the exposed bluffs that surround the lake. He thought that it looked like an awful lot of work to get to the top of a rock. If they could just be ducks they could fly to top with ease and look around.

Image Titled “Female Mallard On Bronze 122920a ” and is a companion to the featured image. Also available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As George was watching a couple of humans trying to cross the deep soft mud on the lake bed he couldn’t help but to chuckle a little. Duck feet are perfect for walking on mud. Just then Tilly came racing across the water. “George! George!” She quacked frantically. “Didn’t you hear me the first time? The humans on the other side of the boat launch are passing out corn! C’mon we’re going to miss it!” George looked lovingly at his beautiful wife as she circled around to move to his side. She smiled back at him and gave him a gentle bump in the water. ” You silly old drake, if not for me you’d starve while watching the humans.” George didn’t say anything. He just followed her to the spot where the corn was floating on the water and counted his blessings.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
