On Destiny vs Fate

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Transition 92319” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Bridges are more than simply a structure. They have spirit. Some bridges even sing if the wind is right. If you’re walking on a bridge you might even feel it dance as the traffic passes over. A good bridge is functional art with graceful lines and imposing strengths. But above all, a bridge is a symbol of transition.

When we think of concepts like destiny we’re tempted to envision a road that starts at birth and delivers us to our ultimate fate. But life isn’t simply a line from birth to death and beyond. It’s a network of decisions that change our course and in doing so change our destiny. I can’t begin to even ponder the number of times when I looked down only to see that my fuel was low. I stop at the station and get delayed by a line of cars at the pump. Then a few miles down the road I come up on a wreck and realize that the delay at pump prevented my involvement in the wreck. It was my choices that expended the fuel that caused me to stop and be delayed. It wasn’t my foreknowledge of a wreck that made me stop but my circumstances that effectively changed my destiny for the day. Other choices are more consciously made. Suppose for a moment that I struck up a conversation with the person at the pump across from me and they had just come from the direction where I was heading and told me of a diesel fuel spill on the road. And that the fuel spill made the road so slick that they had almost wrecked themselves. Now I have a reason to choose an alternate path and change my destiny. So I need a bridge. A bridge that delivers me from one destiny to a better one. I need a point of transition.

Sometimes we are fortunate enough to be warned of hazardous conditions ahead. But if we think that there’s no way to avoid it or we fear that transitional bridge because it shakes then we have created our own fate.

The concept of destiny and the concept of fate might seem the same on the surface but they are in fact two very different things. Fate is uncontrollable. Mankind is mortal. Our fate is to one day leave our body behind and enter into eternity. Destiny is malleable. How we spend that eternity is up to us and our willingness to use the bridge that changes our destiny.

The Persistent Yesterday

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Persistent Yesterday 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Warm breezes caress my face as the marbled sky slips by above my little slice of Appalachia. I stand before the fading symbol of prosperity observing it’s slow descent into lower chamber of the hourglass. Beams and planks twist and bend as they’re pulled back to the ether. The breeze whispers it’s keening song in time with the rattle of the tin. The humid summer air carries the faintest of hints that at one time barrels of sweet grain and stacks of hay filled the dusty floor. The tools and trappings hang frozen on rusted nails awaiting a duty call that never came. Thorns reclaim what the plow forgot and the harvesters left to lie fallow.

Image Titled “Coming And Going 52620”.

The flower only fades away so that the seed may drop. In time new hands will clear the thorns that cling to broken and powdered beams. The sounds hammer saw will call forth a new work and the smell of freshly cut lumber will fill the air. The fallow earth will be fertilized by dreams and sweat and the will to thrive once more. And the persistence of yesterday shall be transformed into the reality of today.

Being Sunshine

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Sunny Side Of Still Life 60220a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Because you smiled my day got better.

Because you spoke I was encouraged.

Because you acted my life improved.

Because you cared I learned my value.

It’s the light inside you that warms the world around you.

The value of good will should never be discounted in any life. When you read the short poem above what did you picture in your mind? I’m guessing that most people had the image of a young couple. Perhaps on a special day. Or was it an older couple in their twilight years when every minute counts and the need to express love and adoration for each other while they’re still together is prominent. But what if these words were spoken to a pastor who’d spent his life serving a congregation. Let’s add one more perspective. How about we say these words to a neighbor who was always there when the chips were down? What if we become that neighbor. You see, there are many types of love. But the actions are simple. It’s that opportunity to show that person that they’re accepted and that they belong that makes a difference in their life.

At Rest

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “At Rest 21620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I’ve been told that if the devil can’t hold you back then he’ll push you forward. The modern world is constantly humming with it’s hustle and bustle and there seldom seems to be time to take a breath.

I look at tonight’s feature image and think about how chaotic and choppy the water seems to be. Like the modern world it never really stops moving with ripples that go in every direction and eddies that swirl around threaten to toss you about. But if you can that place of stillness like the little structure in the water you can hold your focus even if it’s just for a moment.

A Foggy Morning Of Adventures Past

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Willows And Fog 2620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

If not for the roar of Kanawha Falls the river would be completely lost in the thick winter fog. The big blue truck glides to a stop along the muddy shoreline below the hydroelectric plant. The raindrops drum steadily against the metal skin of the truck as I set the brakes and hop out to catch the willows silhouetted in the foggy sunrise. The mists rise from the falls and create a wall of mystery in the background. As a child I loved to play in the fog. My young imagination filled the fog with primeval creatures like dinosaurs and wooly mammoths. Legendary beasts roamed the fields and forests cloaked in heavy mists. In the days before Link and Zelda adventure was found wandering through enchanted lands when the fog shielded my eyes from the mundane. Even today I can imagine the coils of a prehistoric serpent sliding silently through the water. With a dead branch for a spear and an innertube powered slingshot I hunted these beasts back into extinction. As I got older the evening fog served as a perfect backdrop for a game of kick the can at twilight.

Even today I’m resisting the urge to don my rain gear and set off into the mists in search of adventure. But the ticking of a clock beckons me deeper into adulthood and I climb back aboard the big blue truck and return to highway with only the image in my lens to fuel a few daydreams. Childhood it seems is toughest on those that are only young at heart.
