On Destiny vs Fate

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Transition 92319” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Bridges are more than simply a structure. They have spirit. Some bridges even sing if the wind is right. If you’re walking on a bridge you might even feel it dance as the traffic passes over. A good bridge is functional art with graceful lines and imposing strengths. But above all, a bridge is a symbol of transition.

When we think of concepts like destiny we’re tempted to envision a road that starts at birth and delivers us to our ultimate fate. But life isn’t simply a line from birth to death and beyond. It’s a network of decisions that change our course and in doing so change our destiny. I can’t begin to even ponder the number of times when I looked down only to see that my fuel was low. I stop at the station and get delayed by a line of cars at the pump. Then a few miles down the road I come up on a wreck and realize that the delay at pump prevented my involvement in the wreck. It was my choices that expended the fuel that caused me to stop and be delayed. It wasn’t my foreknowledge of a wreck that made me stop but my circumstances that effectively changed my destiny for the day. Other choices are more consciously made. Suppose for a moment that I struck up a conversation with the person at the pump across from me and they had just come from the direction where I was heading and told me of a diesel fuel spill on the road. And that the fuel spill made the road so slick that they had almost wrecked themselves. Now I have a reason to choose an alternate path and change my destiny. So I need a bridge. A bridge that delivers me from one destiny to a better one. I need a point of transition.

Sometimes we are fortunate enough to be warned of hazardous conditions ahead. But if we think that there’s no way to avoid it or we fear that transitional bridge because it shakes then we have created our own fate.

The concept of destiny and the concept of fate might seem the same on the surface but they are in fact two very different things. Fate is uncontrollable. Mankind is mortal. Our fate is to one day leave our body behind and enter into eternity. Destiny is malleable. How we spend that eternity is up to us and our willingness to use the bridge that changes our destiny.

Moving Forward and Change

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Chelyan Bridge 82919” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Sometimes I wonder if the road is really just a series of bridges connected by highways and byways. Symbolicly a bridge represents transition. The connection between two stages of life. But sometimes making those transitions can be a little unsettling. For those who are not local, this bridge has an intersection with a stoplight just before you get to the end on the other side. The bridge shakes and shimmies while you’re stopped at the traffic light. The first few times that I was stopped at the traffic light I was sure that the bridge would fail. It was easy to see why some people are afraid of crossing bridges. But isn’t it the same with life changes? We get out in the middle of a transition and when the ground shakes we want to back. But then if we do that we never reach our destination. Transition is how our situation improves. Reaching and crossing those bridges in life is we leave the past behind and move on to the bigger and better things that God has planned for us.

Closed Connection

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Closed Connection” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The union of man and machine is qhat makes modern life possible. Our ability to travel beyond the constraints of time in ways that our ancestors couldn’t gives us a reach that was outside of their grasps. And yet, that device can so easily become a gilded cage. Occasionally we need to exit from the drive and enjoy the fresh air.

Crossing After The Storm

Hello Friends!Tonight’s feature image is titled “Crossing After The Storm ” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Last night the wind howled across the ridge line knocking over trees like a child throwing a tantrum. Bright flashes of lightning splashed across the sky and thunder rattled the windows. My little buddy Scout alternated between cuddling with my wife and I for protection against noise.

Almost as suddenly as it started the thunder faded away over the mountains and the three of us sat by candlelight listening to the rain as it slowed to a halt. As the sound of rain hitting roof gave way to the chorus of frogs I was struck by how peaceful the night had become without the noise of technology. With the only light being that of an LED candle in the hallway we soon drifted off to sleep.

The next morning the electricity grid was still down and that means going to town for coffee. As I stepped outside the mountains full of songbirds and that special fresh scent that comes only after a thunderstorm. The storm left behind a mist the clung to the landscape and made everything look magical. This was the perfect opportunity for me to get out with my gear and visit one of my favorite subjects to photograph. The curved trestle bridge between Alloy and Deepwater West Virginia. As I carefully step beyond the foliage in full view of the river and the bridge. The azure sky was broken up by the remnant of the storm. The clouds are no longer dark and angry and seem to be drawn beyond the mist covered mountain in the background. Below the river runs high and muddy but otherwise the is flat and soothing. The long curved bridge draws my eyes forward into the land of the Adena where it said that ancient giants sleep beneath the forest in halls of stone. I have taken several shots of the bridge and while Fayette County West Virginia has a world famous bridge this one rivals it’s beauty.

Like the rivers and streams of my Appalachian Mountains I can’t really seem to stay in one place. I take several shots from multiple cameras and it’s time to make my way towards the big blue truck parked on the edge of the road and look for the next destination.

West Virginia, Almost Heaven

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “When Heaven Comes Down” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

It’s when I come up on a scene like the one in the feature image that I really understand why my home is called “Almost Heaven”. There’s times when I think that if I could reach the top of the mountain quick enough that I could touch the clouds. I know that there are higher mountains in the world. But, when I look around my West Virginia home I know that heaven comes down to meet us halfway.
