Listening To The Voices Of The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Autumn’s Call 102621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Forest has a voice of its own that’s beyond the sounds of songbirds and insects. When they’re silent music still comes from the mountains. The breathy whistle of the wind in the trees, the rhythm of falling leaves or rain depending on the season and the creaking groans of wood as it stretches and twists all come together during the peak color season. It’s on days like this that the mountains sing and tell stories to those who sit quietly and listen. Some of the oaks tell me about how much it tickles as the squirrels run up and down their trunks. The maples nod in agreement as golden leaves flow from their crowns adding more rhythm to the music. The oldest elm on the mountain whispers of the secret owls nest in the hollow of her ancient bole and how it makes her feel needed so she guards the nest well. The birches tell me how they hold back the mountain in their roots and keep the big rocks from rolling downhill. These and many other stories are shared in the fading light of late October as I sit on the tailgate of the big blue truck and just listen.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Seeker’s Reward

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Faithful Seeker 192221” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Tired wings carry the seeker across a withering landscape. But still she pushes on traveling further and further from her nest in search of her family’s needs. The paper wasp is adaptable to all kinds of food sources but with the changes in season and oncoming cold those sources are more spread out than they were just a few short weeks ago. The once plentiful Goldenrod has mostly gone to seed leaving behind a dry woody stock and white tufts that are destined to ride the gusts and gales of late Fall through Winter. The swarms are already gathering in attics and hollow trees or deep within the crevices of exposed rocks for the long hibernation. Soon she must join them and she’ll need every precious drop of nectar to make it through till Spring. The bright yellow speck in a field of light tan brings a joy to her journey as she zeros in. The last Goldenrod of this field is small but fresh and full of the fuel she seeks. Because of traditional perception we tend to think of wasps as mean bees with a nasty attitude but the truth is that they help pollenate the wildflowers and they eat other pests. We either fear or respect the sting they carry and with good reasons. I’m still carrying a mark from a wasp sting that I received at the end of August. But the honest truth is that I’d been unknowingly shaking her nest violently for several minutes before she took action. ( I was working on a trash bin and had overlooked the nest ) most of the time they are docile enough to approach within range of the lens. And even then will make a few bluff charges before their sting is felt. I’m sure that if I’d come too close to this one she might have gotten nervous enough to be aggressive but the field is neutral territory and her only goal at the moment is to enjoy God’s provision. We could all learn a little lesson from her in that faith undertakes the journey knowing that a seeker is rewarded.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Minutes Beneath The Dogwood In Fall

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Crimson And Glory 101921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The smell of fallen leaves fill the light breeze in my Appalachian Mountains. For me autumn is such a bittersweet season. I love the lower humidity and beautiful spectrum of colors that sweep across my mountain home but I know that soon the sun will take it’s yearly nap and shadows will blanket the hills. Even now some of trees have drifted into their deep sleep. The upside of course is that with the leaves down the birds, squirrels and other wildlife is much easier to spot. As I looked upward into the canopy hoping to spot a bushy tail sitting still and pretending to be a knot on a limb I did spot the tiny biscuit shaped buds on the twigs. I know that by the number and size of the buds that this tree is already preparing to give us a beautiful Spring in 2022. It’s a wonderful reminder that our blessings are prepared way ahead of our needs. And that’s a comforting thought indeed.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

After The Storm

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Still Standing 102421” and is available for purchase by clicking on the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I visited one of my favorite trees a few days ago. The ancient Sycamore that overlooks the Kessler Cross Lanes area. This tree is absolutely huge. It’s on private property so I only admire it from the public road and I’m not able to actually measure the base of the tree but I’ve seen two cows laying beneath it end to end and together they were just a little longer than the tree is wide. The limbs of this tree are “timber sized”.

You can tell that the old tree has weathered many storms. There’s no real way to tell exactly how tall it might have been and even the large limbs have been broken and lost significant portions. But the old tree just keeps going. No matter how battered and broken by storms it is that tree just keeps growing. The roots must be just as large and well anchored.

If a person lives long enough they’re going to tested by life’s storms. We’re going to be battered and broken and loss will always be part of it. But that’s only half of the story. Because if our roots are deep enough and we’ll anchored then there’s going to be a comeback. We just need to keep reaching and growing. Survival is simply not being torn down by life’s storms. Winning is when you don’t let them stop you from growing.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Stroll Into The Painted Mountain

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sweet Birch In Gold 101921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool winds paint the mountains in warm tones as the days grow noticeably shorter. Each morning the misty veil lifts to show a new addition to the growing masterpiece of color and texture. A simple stroll through a section of woods becomes a journey into a fantasy world of ancient trees and colors that rain down with each gust. If you’re still enough you can hear the squirrels. Their playful bounding through dry leaves sounds like a giant stomping around just out of sight. The twigs of a bush lift from their spot and you realize that it’s a majestic buck that is moving quietly through the hills. The birds have changed their songs slightly as they fan out to gather their favorite seeds. Soon the frost will come and all will twinkle and glisten in the morning light. But for now the days are filled with perfect moments and beautiful colors.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
