The Pink Azalea Is Also Awake

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Pink Azalea 5920a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The unseasonably cold weather and overcast skies have had me watching the world through someone else’s lens for the past few days. So when the rain stopped for a little while I headed for the light to see what changes have taken place. Beneath the side deck and in a little sheltered spot this pink azalea has quietly been building up her Spring fashion. If the Flame Azalea that I posted last night burned away the last cold day then the pink azalea flushed in celebration.

Image Titled “Pink Azalea 5920b”.

Although her flowers are smaller they’re just as bright. I have have seeing quite a few woodnymph butterflies outside my windows in those few moments between showers and I suspected that this was why. The previous owners of the house had planted the pink azalea just before I bought it. In the past several years it’s grown so much that I’ll need to trim it back before it takes over the deck. The plan is to prep several of the branches to be removed with rooting hormones so that I can replant them and help the azalea spread.

The Tiny Treasure

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tiny Treasure 42720” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The softly fallen rain now trickles as minut streams that roll silently through the forest floor. Deep within the the wind thrown tree a thick mat of threads transport the necessities of life to the surface. As I approach the old birch log the scent if the rain soaked moss fills my nose. Then, among the tiny fern-like strands of moss a single leaf rises as it was a tree itself. Simple and unpretentious and yet the beauty of leaf is undeniable. The gentle curl near the base reminded me of a small child waking from a nap and rubbing it’s eyes. No wonder we refer to a rotting log as a “nurse tree”.

Image Titled “The Nurse Tree 42720”. The tree fell in 2012.

I’ve watched this log since it fell in 2012 when straight line winds forced my forest to be reborn. The event was what lead me come to the realization that disruption precedes regeneration. The event opened up the canopy and allowed seeds that had been in the ground for a long time to have their chance to flourish. Many of the wildflowers that I’ve posted this year were born out of that destruction. The giant tree fell and gave the moss a place to gather. The moss held the moisture and provided habitat for the fungus and the fungus feeds the violet leaf that spawned my moment of tranquility.

As we move forward in this time of concern I want you to know that even though the world changes that disruption doesn’t have to mean loss. It can also mean rebirth and the germination of seeds that once lay dormant unable to wake until something let in the light.

Napping Violet

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Napping Violet 4220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Violet didn’t feel particularly blue today. In fact she was her cheerful sunny self. However, being a bright personality all the time was hard work and even though she hadn’t left her bed all day she was tired. So she laid down for a nap. The small twig on the forest floor made a perfect pillow for her head. Her life was simple and yet wild at the same time. In the past she had considered a move away from the mountains but her roots were just too deep here. No, she would stay where she was planted. After all, it was her perennial duty to bring joy to that spot every year. She didn’t even mind living in the shady part of the forest.

When we think about violets we have a tendency to think that violets are always blue. Well, the ones that are deeper in the forest are yellow. The ones that occur in my little forest sanctuary have smooth leaves but the yellow violets are known for having fuzzy leaves. They have two types of flowers. Chasmogamous ( Latin for open marriage) flowers in the early Spring. These flowers exchange pollen with other plants but later in the summer this violet will produce cleistogamous flowers without pedals or scent. These second blooms will self pollinate and produce a natural clone of the parent plant.

The yellow violets are sometimes mistaken for pansies but pansies have 4 pedals that point up where violets only have 2 upward pointing pedals.

When I saw the one in tonight’s feature image it looked so much like it was resting that I couldn’t help but write about the things that a sleepy violet might be thinking about.

Red Trilliums And The Blessed Light

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Appalachian Red Trillium 4220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The afternoon sun brings a gentle warmth to my mountain as I stroll through the growing grass. Several robins take flight whistling their alarms as I pass the tree in my yard that holds the feeders. The violets are almost as think as the grass and it’s becoming obvious that I need to tune up my mower soon. I come to the spot that has become my forest sanctuary to see what the mountain has to present me with today. The mountain does not disappoint me. The beautiful Red Trilliums have sprung up overnight.

Also known as Wake Robin, Bethroot, Toad Shade and Stinking Benjamin, the Red Trillium is one of our most showy Appalachian Wildflowers. It’s arrival always coincides with the Robins preparing for the breeding season. It’s certainly possible that we’ll have a killing frost after these open and I’ve even seen snow on Easter Sunday but it’s not likely. It’s a significant marker on my natural calendar when these beautiful flowers carpet the shady places on the mountains.

The shape of the flowers always reminds me of a Star Of David. One triangle points up and another one points down. The symbolism was always explained to me as payers going up and blessings coming down. In fact the whole plant seems to be based on triangles. There’s even 3 leaves to a plant.

Image Titled “Red Trillium 4220b” shows that plant has 3 leaves.

Looking up the mountains and across my landscape certainly makes me feel like I’m blessed. The light that I’ve prayed for since October has arrived and is growing stronger every day. Light is the element of cleansing, renewal and rebirth. And the Red Trillium is one more sign of that taking place.

Enjoying A Little Tranquility In The Mountains Of Nicholas County

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Solitude On Little Elk Creek 32520” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The warm night brings a morning rain and the little creek in my yard swells. It’s run to the Gauley River quickens as it playfully swirls around the exposed stone. I have to admit that the stay at home orders have been a bit of a blessed in disguise for me. Instead of stealing a few minutes while on the road I’ve been able to enjoy a full hour of solitude on my mountain. I was even able to slip away to the neighboring mountain today and enjoy the majestic view of the Gauley River.

A quick cellphone panorama of the big blue truck stopped on Panther Mountain.

The trip is normally only available to me in weekends but the absence of a commute and the lingering daylight meshed together to bring out the opportunity.

I’ve stated before that having a moment of tranquility is just as important to health as eating right and exercise. Between the mass media and pressures of modern life the mind becomes cluttered and the mind is the gateway to the spirit. Everything we see, hear or experience becomes a part of our whole being. Some things are unavoidable. Everyone has a little clutter here and there in there mind. But the mind is only a gateway. Yes. It can let things in but a gate works in two directions. We can also use it to move the clutter out. For me that means spending time in the natural world. I believe that it’s something that’s common to all of humanity. Sitting by a stream and watching the water swirl around the rocks or making the egress up a seldom used mountain pass with windows down and listening to the woodpeckers call and drum helps to open that gate and set the clutter out by the curb. Even if it’s not something that is available to you at the moment you can close your eyes and call forth the details of your own little spot in nature. Perhaps the images I provide can help but however you do it be sure to enjoy some tranquility today.
