Emerald Dreams

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Emerald Dreams 42820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The harsh landscape has now softened in the rain.

The cage of thorns and branches has given way to softer coverings of the emerald canopy above.

The ancient red maple in the park has cooled it’s fiery buds in the Spring showers and cast it’s keys to the wind.

And I? I await my chance to roam freely through the green sea of living things. And sit quietly on the rocks to listen for secrets in the wind.

The secrets whispered by the trees in a code of whistles and creaks. They recount tales of love and war and love again in the cycles of men and women who tread the path beneath the branches and boles.

They speak of new life in the forests and streams. Lives that kick up their heels and dance to the tune that only the wild ones hear.

They tell of the wings that come in the thousands. Some looking for nectar and others that not so benevolent and yet every bit as much a part of the master plan as dew which falls in evening and stays til morning light breaches the emerald canopy and starts the day fresh and new.

The Keys To Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Keys To Spring 41820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cold wind and rain eases up and gives me a chance to run some errands. The landscape here in the shelter of my little hollow near the foot of my mountain is bursting with life. Most of the trees are sporting their emerald cloaks and the lawn is starting to look like a hay field. However, as I make the egress up the highway that wind it’s way towards the land of my birth the green leaves fade thinner with each twist in the road. Near the top of the mountain it still looks like March in a few places. The two locations are so different that I not only forgot to wear a jacket but I almost wore shorts.

Throughout the hills there are spots of bright red. At a casual glance a person might be convinced that they had slept through Summer and woken up in Fall. The red maple is a tree that yields it’s beautiful red tones twice per year. We get the red leaves in the Fall but we also get red buds, flowers and keys in the Spring.

In my imagination I can almost hear an elder passing down a legend about the fire locked up in the tree and how it has to come out before the leaves can return. To my knowledge no such tale actually exists but if it did it would be a good one. For now, I can appreciate the crimson speckles that accent my mountain as time grows ever greener.

New Life On The Farm

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “New Life 41820a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck takes me along the stretch of road that had so much influence on my life. I remember when the road was about 2/3 The width it is today. Because most of roads in my life at the time were either gravel roads or jeep trails we called this section of road “The Hard Top”. It runs past the front field that now belongs to my uncle. I can’t really remember a time when it wasn’t full of cattle or standing hay. Even with the old one room schoolhouse that we used for a barn I relive my childhood every time I pass through. But today was special. Today as I slowly drifted by a band new calf came sprinting up to investigate the truck. The baby is only a few hours old and already able to run and play. She’s in love with life!

Image Titled “New Life 41820b”. This is the Carl’s second approach to my truck.

The calf is still wet and testing out her legs. She runs a few zig-zag patterns and figure eights through the pasture and slows to a trot before walking back to the truck.

The new calf will feed on mother’s milk for about 2 months but already she seems to be investigating the taste of the fresh grass in the field of her birth. The world is full of new scents and sounds for her. She licks the grass a little and then in a sudden burst of energy she starts running her figure eights through the pasture again.

I got the distinct impression that she was thinking “Look how fast I can run!” Her Jack Rabbit take off throws small bits of grass into the air as she kicks up her heels.

The rest of herd looks on. The looks on their faces say “There she goes again!” As she zooms through the middle of the herd.

There she goes again!

She makes a dash for the other newborn and cuts away at the last second as her mother steps forward trying to get control of her runaway child.

Finally, the new calf circles around and presents herself to me once more.

Image Titled “New Life 41820e”.

By now her mother is looking frustrated and I decided it was time to remove the big blue truck a little farther down the road. As I pulled away I could see the calf return to her mother’s side in the rear view mirror.

I was energized by the calf’s antics and there’s something very satisfying about seeing new life finding a new would to explore and play in.

First Light &Simple Blessings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “First Light 41620a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I stepped out beneath the mountain earlier than has become normal in the past few weeks. Somewhere in the forest the laughing call of a woodpecker echoes across the hills. I have struggled to actually spot some of the bird species on my property but the morning chorus is in full concert. As my avian friends greet the morning light I noticed that my azalea has opened. The new white flowers seem to be waiting for the sun to fully spill over the ridge. Even now they eagerly catch the slightest trickle of light and convert it to a sweet aroma.

Image Titled “First Light 41620b”.

There must be some kind of magic infused into the first light. It makes the the birds sing and flowers open. The air is full of insects and the whole world is in contentment. It’s a perfect day to not just count my blessings but to embrace and enjoy them. Oftentimes we “count our blessings” like an old mother hen taking a head count to see if anyone is missing. But what good are blessings tucked away in box gathering dust? We need to realize that the simple blessings of this world are just as miraculous as anything described in the bible. Take a few minutes to enjoy them every day. I have said of foraging that God loves us so much that he’s given his providence in such a way that what is most important is found in the greatest abundance. Why should we think that mundane occurrence of singing birds and opening flowers is any less important than the miracle we ask for when a loved one is sick? So take a little time to breath the fresh air and have some quiet time. It’s like vitamins for the spirit.

Renewal In The Forest

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Box Elder In Macro 4220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

My little forest sanctuary is rapidly changing as days grow longer. It’s said that Nature can’t tolerate a vacuum and Box Elder that is the shade tree in my yard is her accomplice. Every open spot where I don’t really mow now has a new Box Elder growing. Most are seedlings like the one in tonight’s feature image. As the master of my property I have some choices. I can remove the seedlings in an effort to maintain the open space or I could let nature take course and see what happens. The young seedlings have a market value and I have them in abundance. I could probably donate a few to a group that is interested reforesting waste areas. I’m sure that if I wanted to put the time and effort into it that there’s at least a dozen options.

I have the distinct impression that this spot was once as thick as the rest of mountain but at some point in the past something disrupted the status quo. Who knows what ancient tree was removed from the spot in the past? The only constant thing in this world is chang. Whatever changed in the past before I acquired the property removed the things of the past but also made it possible for new beginnings.

Our world is the precipice of major disruption but be encouraged. The vacuum left in the wake of change is our chance to shape the future. All it takes is for us to look at the options and set a course.
