Wild Geranium in Spring 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Wild Geranium 4220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

New Life rises from the forest floor as the Cardnials call a tune for the sun. All over the mountain the green things are filling the view. At my feet I noticed the tiny purple buds presented to the world. The wild geranium is a great source of joy in the Appalachian Spring. It’s usually among the first plants to rise and bring color to my world.

They always inspired contentment with the changing season.

I take the opportunity to just sit among them and enjoy the real world as a part of creation and not just in creation.

Napping Violet

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Napping Violet 4220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Violet didn’t feel particularly blue today. In fact she was her cheerful sunny self. However, being a bright personality all the time was hard work and even though she hadn’t left her bed all day she was tired. So she laid down for a nap. The small twig on the forest floor made a perfect pillow for her head. Her life was simple and yet wild at the same time. In the past she had considered a move away from the mountains but her roots were just too deep here. No, she would stay where she was planted. After all, it was her perennial duty to bring joy to that spot every year. She didn’t even mind living in the shady part of the forest.

When we think about violets we have a tendency to think that violets are always blue. Well, the ones that are deeper in the forest are yellow. The ones that occur in my little forest sanctuary have smooth leaves but the yellow violets are known for having fuzzy leaves. They have two types of flowers. Chasmogamous ( Latin for open marriage) flowers in the early Spring. These flowers exchange pollen with other plants but later in the summer this violet will produce cleistogamous flowers without pedals or scent. These second blooms will self pollinate and produce a natural clone of the parent plant.

The yellow violets are sometimes mistaken for pansies but pansies have 4 pedals that point up where violets only have 2 upward pointing pedals.

When I saw the one in tonight’s feature image it looked so much like it was resting that I couldn’t help but write about the things that a sleepy violet might be thinking about.

The New Leaves

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “New Leaves 33020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The late afternoon sum smiles across mountain and welcomes my exit from my day job. The opportunity to work from home has added so much life to my day! I’ve traded a morning stop by the river for a moment of peace and quiet for an afternoon stroll around my forest. The Swallowtail butterflies have already begun to soar gracefully across my window. They’re seen only for a moment as they search for the newly formed leaves and flowers in the bushes. The open window has also shown me that the bees are out searching for the fresh nectar. Those who feed the hummingbirds should be getting those feeders ready for the early arrivals! The computer screen goes dark and I’m free to step out the corporate world and directly into the real world. The songbirds are starting to get used to my presence. They don’t really get close but they don’t fly away as quickly. Today as I entered into the trees I was greeted by the brand new maple leaves. They’re fully formed but not fully open. Over the next day the roots will pump water into the leaves and the fuzz will fall away.

The texture of the new leaves.

I’m thrilled to have the green leaves in place of the bare twigs but the texture new leaves are fascinating as well. The repeated lines of the veins are a welcome consistent pattern in contrast to the randomness of twigs that have filled my world for the past four months. I lift my eyes up and soak in all the green spots on the hill and I can almost feel the life returning as the long slumber ends.

It’s All Connected & About To Wake Up.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Dutchman’s Breeches 32420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The warm morning air carries the scent of the moss and the rich humus mingled with the stones in the creek. Erupting through the moss and scattered leaves are the tiny flowers that showcase the Appalachian Spring. When you pull back the humus and examine the roots it’s obvious that the network of roots are more complex than the circuit board of any supercomputer. It’s all connected with a mat of fine filaments called mycelium. The entire forest is a living information system. I’ve always appreciated the beauty of the mountains and the forest but wasn’t until recently that I began to understand that the smaller plants that cover it all serve purposes beyond the need for pleasant human experience. After the ages since Adam was cast from the garden of Eden mankind is just now beginning to rediscover the secrets that he was most likely programmed with at his conception. Even the humble little flowers like the Dutchman’s Breeches in tonight’s feature image are constantly collecting and transmitting data through the network. Perhaps because they’re in full growth before the majority of the trees awaken they’re transmitting information about the soil conditions and weather to the trees. I have noticed that the maple family doesn’t open their buds until the Dutchman’s Breeches bloom. It’s the natural calendar in action. One that marks God’s seasons and they tell me that it’s time to remove the snow blade from my tractor and attach the mowing deck. I can put my heavy jackets away get ready for the grand awakening that’s soon to come.

Hidden Blessings

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Wild Geranium 32420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck has been parked for the better part of a week now. Fortunate is the one who has the opportunity to be sequestered in the Appalachian Mountains as the Spring season comes on. Even more so when that happens to coincide with my day off. I awoke to sound of the rain ebbing away softly into parts unknown beyond the ridge line. The window of my bedroom relays the golden smile of the morning sun and the birds begin to join the morning chorus.

As my mountain awakes to the new day I make my way to my woodland sanctuary on the edge of my property. Several of the robins take to the lower branches as I breech the invisible barrier between yard and forest. The ground is carpeted with life. Small flowers look up and smile where just 24 hours ago only the promise of something that might be held the ground. Among the new arrivals is one that’s not normally present this early. Geranium maculatum or wild geranium. I normally don’t see them until we’re well into April. And, this one seems to be the only one right now. But I know that where one thrives others are breaking through the leaf litter yet unseen. Blessings are like that. They’re coming wether you see them or not. But if you just look around you’ll find them when they arrive.
