In Appreciation Of The Alder

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Red Alder Catkins 120120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The ice and snow blows through the little highland delta on Muddlety Creek as the long night inches closer. The Appalachian Winter is fickle here. Sometimes we get a white Christmas but most likely it be a wet Christmas instead. Real life is seldom like a story book. But real life is also constantly in renewal as well. Even though I refer to climatic winter as the season when the forest sleeps there are some arboreal sentinels that are only “playing possum” and are very much awake. Such as it is with the red alder. She sheds her leaves along with the rest of forest but when nobody is looking she puts forth her bloom. Beautiful crimson specks are found all along the wetlands right now. And soon they will swell with pollen to be carried on the winter wind. For all of my distaste of old man winter’s icy presence he is here to do a job for us. The howling gale that sweeps through the mountains and rivers propagates the members of the birch family. And while on warm days some bees will take advantage of pollen on the catkins they only gather from the male flowers. They don’t visit the tiny cones that will birth the next generation of trees. That responsibility falls to the cold hans of the winter wind. And without the right mixture of daylight and darkness the alder tree wouldn’t know that it’s time open one sleepy eye and add a little pop of color to the bland landscape.

Life is always with us. Even when it isn’t obvious.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Destiny In The Mists

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Destiny In The Mists” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Sometimes when we look ahead to the next leg of life’s journey we can’t really see where it will take us. The temptation is stay where we are and be comfortable. However, the truth is that there is no staying where we are. We either move forward or we are pulled back. We have to trust the bridge builder. He knew how to make the bridge strong enough to hold us up and he knew where the bridge had to go. We may not see the destiny clearly now but as we draw closer the vision will clear and we’ll know where to step.

My closing thoughts for tonight’s post is that faith is moving forward in trust and it is necessary for a well lived life.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Homecoming 1865

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Ghosts Of Winter 120120a ” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I stood by the roadside near the old battlefield as the Winter wind whispered through empty branches.  The wind spoke of days gone by when the soldiers left the battlefield to return to their loved ones. Candles were lit in every window and every hearth held a warm fire. The empty spots at tables were prepared with the best dinnerware in expectations of being filled. Families hoped as they prayed that they would soon hear the sound of boots on the doorstep. The baying of excited hounds harald coming of a favored son. His beard is now thick and unkept and obscures his face but his eyes look tenderly on those who he left behind. The exchange of embraces exceed the need for spoken words which are more often than not merely ceremony. The humble table of rough hewn lumber is adorned with handmade trimming but sports a feast of royal proportion. Yet even though he had not eaten in several days the soldier pauses to pray and bless both the meal and his family. There is nothing like being home for the holidays. Even if it took eight months of  marching to get there. After the meal he removed his boots and placed them in box under the bed. They were marching boots and after today he wouldn’t need march anymore.

A Misty Journey & Daydreaming Of The Ancient Past

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Misty Journey 113020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As the big blue truck rolls beyond what has become it’s normal boundaries the mist and rain fall gently on my world. This is time of shadows when forest sheds it’s colorful blanket of Fall hues and sleeps deeply. Through the bare boles along the highway I see the curved bridge stretching out across the mighty Kanawha River. This bridge has always inspired a bit of wanderlust for me. There are days when I just want to follow the tracks over the mountains and through the tunnel at the little community of Deepwater on the other side of the river. The land on the other side of the river was the home of the Adena. The mysterious Pre-Columbian people who built the mounds and circled the mountains with stone walls. It’s said that they were giants and had bronze age metallurgy. As I stare at the mist covered mountains in the distance I wonder if they would be impressed with the iron and concrete used by the current Appalachian people. I wonder if somewhere on those misty mountains is there lies a stone pipe or a piece of copper jewelry worked by the hands of a legend. It would be a hidden treasure indeed. As I’m lost in my daydream of giant natives and ancient stones I’m drawn suddenly back to reality when a cold raindrop finds its way to the back of my neck. It’s time to return to Big Blue and make my way back to my fireplace where I can process my photos and tell my tales.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Cold Days & Favorite Meals

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Holly In The Park 120120a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cold wind curls over the mountains and spills into my life. Old man winter can rage on but he cannot reach me. A warm thermos of coffee serves as an elixir of health as I sit in my chair and watch the firelight from across the room. As the snow swirls outside my frost covered window the winter mood overtakes me and there’s only one thing I can do. Put on a pot of homemade soup. The pantry is well stocked with the usual ingredients and before long the house is full of the aroma of childhood memories. I allow the crock pot to simmer most of the day as I worked my day job. Patience has it’s own reward at the end of day when the flavors of the vegetables and beef are blended perfectly and served with a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s my profound belief that God gave us cold snowy days so we can better enjoy comfort foods like a good homemade stew.

Before I close let me ask what your favorite winter meal is?

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
