A Few Minutes Of Solitude

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Solitude 100820bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I stand on the little bridge that crosses Peter’s Creek looking in the direction of the falls downstream. The warm autumn sun bathed landscape as the gentle breeze flowed over the mountains connecting all things. Each sound from the surrounding forest told it’s own story. A redtailed hawk cries out as it finds its strength in the wind. Small fish leap from the water and land with a tiny plop on the surface. The catbird just beyond the trees rings out its ever changing melody as the first of leaves to fall provide a rhythm for his tune. Gazing into the surface of the water I read the ripples eminate from the stones that peirce the surface. Their gentle influences mellow out into a uniform pattern that holds my attention. The breeze shifts again and delivers the scent of hay drying in a nearby field. It lasts only for a moment. The voices of nature are the whispers of God speaking peace to the troubled soul. A few moments of solitude are all it takes if you choose to receive his words.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Hidden Destinies & The Moment We Have.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Hidden Destiny 113020bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There are so many hidden places in these mountains. Many of them have the steel ribbon that carries the coal but the general public will never see where they go or known precisely where they end. But today I took a diversion from my normal path out to one of places that these tracks eventually lead. The connect with multiple places, but one of them leads to a place where I spent my one and only day working on a strip mine. I was 18 years old and was working under the table so I’ll not out the person who gave me that experience more than 30 years ago. The mine was opening new ground and needed a strong back to carry bags of explosives to the holes. I wasn’t alone and together with a few friends we unloaded and carried what I estimated to be a ton of bags to where the engineers were setting the charges. At the end of the day when they did the blast we watched from a couple of miles away. The shock wave hit us twice. Once when it arrived from the blast site and then when it bounced off the mountain behind us. It was an thrilling experience that I’ll never forget. But today when I drove to the blast site ( as close as I could get without trespassing) the tracks where rusted and overgrown. The mine shut down long ago and the trains have no need to go there anymore. But the tracks on the end where I took the pictures are shiny and well maintained. The coal is still running but it’s coming from a different source. So on one hand the tracks go to my past and on the other hand they go to a future I’m not connected to.

Looking down the tracks and knowing that they’re only a few switches away from prosperity or despair it would be easy to become overwhelmed by potential for a bad end. But today, today I live. Sure, we need to plan ahead and be active in creating the future but all we really have is moment we live in.

My final thought for tonight is to remind myself that I can’t be so intimidated the potential for disaster that I look back to find that I’ve lost all my moments to fear and trepidation. Today I live. Not yesterday or tomorrow but today. Prepare for the future but don’t wait until it’s here to act. Respect the past but learn to let it go. And take time to appreciate the moment that you have.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Foxtail In My Memory & My Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Fixtail 112920bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A cold north wind catches my ear and whispers “The long night is coming”. The sting of old man winter’s icy breath burns my exposed skin as I kneel slightly to find my subject. A simple frond of foxtail grass growing near the road. The interesting texture and graceful arc of the seedhead in the failing light was irresistible. I’m always taken back to my paternal Grandmother’s house where these grew on the edge of the yard just beyond the apple trees. Perhaps I idealize things in distant memory but I remember them as being back-lit by the evening sun. I also remember the way they tickled in late summer when they brushed against bare legs. Its odd the way you think that you’ve forgotten a specific moment in your life until someone random object unlocks the past. However, there’s no risk of bare legs being tickled today. As the wind settled for a moment I found my moment and snapped the shutter.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days

Fun With Payphones

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pay Phone 110420a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The payphone. Once upon a time it was the icon of contact with the outside world. I remember when a local call was only a dime but by the time I was old enough to drive legally it was a quarter. I learned to travel with a handful of coins in case of an emergency. And in most of my teen years emergency contact was the purpose of a payphone. But it wasn’t long before I learned that a pay phone could also be a source of entertainment. It all started with a sharpie and a song on the radio. I couldn’t help myself as I compelled by my own sense of humor to write 867-5309 on the phone booth. I walked away snickering as if I had just pulled off the greatest prank ever. The glorious thing about payphones is the amount of anonymity they provided. For price of a handful of quarters you could call anyone and pretend to be anyone. Calling the front desk of a hotel and leaving a message for “Joe Kezonu” was always good for a snicker. But you could also call into a payphone for free if you called from a regular land line. I remember one particular boring day when a few college friends were looking for something to do and spotted a person standing near the phone booth at the 711 station below the dorms. The number into the booth had previously been taken down and kept by the phone with the idea of a game. The game was to look out the window and if a girl was near the booth we’d call the number and try to get her to answer. If you could get the girl to flirt with you then you won. We didn’t really keep score or anything but we did occasionally win a date. The best one that I actually remember went something like…

Ring Ring.

Girl: Hello

Guy: Is this Superman’s office?

Girl: ( Giggling ) What? No.

Guy: I think it is. Can you look for him?

Girl: I don’t see Superman.

Guy: You will if you wait a few minutes.

The guy proceeded to leave the room and go talk to the girl in person.

There was one time that a drunk answered the phone.

Guy: Is Superman there?

Drunk: This is Superman. What do you want.

The guy didn’t know what say next but we all a good laugh.

Now with the new technologies we don’t really need the payphone but there’s still a few around. Perhaps I’ll call this on sometime to see if anyone answers and ask if they see Superman. Just for old time sake.

Do you see Superman?

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days!

November Crossing 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November Crossing 111720bw” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cold November wind roars by spitting trace amounts of snow. Most of the fall color has been stripped away by Old Man Winter’s icy breath. By chance I was able to make a trip to the Salmon Run area of Summersville Lake. Here in area only accessible to me during winter pool I gaze across the water and consider the landscape that once was. A flood control lake such as this is almost an aquatic desert. The stumps of a forest long gone rest on stone and muck like tombstones. The discarded Christmas trees dot the landscape behind me on what was once a park like meadow.

Before me lays the remaining essence of the lake. Within its depths small country lanes cross a murky landscape of abandoned foundations left by those who tamed a rugged wilderness. The bridge stretches across the moody skys like an angel’s highway going from mountain to mountain. And yet here in this melancholy domain of the dark months there is peace and solitude. A place where one can escape from the tick of a clock and imposing thoughts of the outside world. Occasionally I hear the calls the crows reminding me that this is their domain until Spring when the new light is strong and life awakens once more.

My annual pilgrimage to this particular place has become another marker in my natural calendar. At the time of this writing it’s only 4 weeks and 5 days until the sun awakens and begins to push back the shadows. This is point when the forest sleeps and renews itself for the splendor of Spring. This is the season for mankind to enjoy the steam from a thermos of coffee and began to plan for gardens, tinker in shops and enjoy the warmth of the hearth with loved ones. It is a time to draw stories from the depths of imagination and send an inner light into the world. Dreams are made in the downtime of the dark months and it’s from those dreams we shape the reality of our lives. And with that final thought I must end this post.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
