Master Of The Sky

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Butterfly Landing Zone 52320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The strong thermals rise from the ground like tiny tornadoes. The humidity brought on by the short but intense rain gives weight to the rising air mass. For you and I the storm is over but for the the butterfly the aftermath of the turbid air is still a challenge. He sails in without any fear or even the slightest bit of concern. Though tattered and torn his wings still command a mastery of the sky. He senses the warm sun on his wings and the hot plumes rising from the ground glow in his vision. His antennas are capable of smell and he’s attuned to the pool of water below. He weaves through the thermals with the ease of an acrobat until he’s lined up with the one open space near the pool. A few of the other patrons rise from the ground with a simple twitch of the wings but all that’s needed to avoid a mid air collision is a subtle rocking motion. He skimmed the water and with a twitch of his own wings lands squarely on his mark. He is of course a master of the sky.

The Swallowtail Yard Party, Memorial Day Weekend 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Puddling Swallowtails 52320a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The air is thick and steamy on my mountain today. After several days of rain the ground is saturated and the water pools in the low spots. The rain came before I could work the clippings from the lawn but out here in the country that’s no big deal. But if there’s any advantage it’s that the downed grass acts like a sponge and at the same time releases minerals and sugars into the water that. It holds back. That’s a perfect world at a perfect time for the local butterflies as they begintheir breeding season. The minerals and salts are important for their reproduction. It seems that the females can even detect which males are able to provide the most and best quality salt and he’s given preference above the others.

The majority of the butterflies that gather are males. I did notice one female Pipevine while sorting through the photos. Judging by size of this gathering and knowing that in general the female butterflies outnumber the males it looks like the potential for a massive brood this year.

The mix seems to be mostly Tiger Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail and I confirmed at least one Spicebush Swallowtail all gathered in this one spot

They are so interested in this particular puddle that they barely paid attention to me as I crept up on my hands and knees for the closer shots. I have been researching ways to keep them around for the summer and hopefully we have more photos soon.

The West Virginia White Butterfly

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “West Virginia White 42820a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Between the rainy days and the warming weather my yard has gotten to a point that would give a Home Owners Association a coronary. But that’s okay. The bees and butterflies are loving the extra bloom to feed on. I had been surveying the landscape for any sign of an increase in the honeybee population when one of the flowers suddenly sprung to life and lifted into the air. I have seen the little white butterflies before and although they’re pretty I presumed that I was seeing a cabbage looper. A hungry creature that destroys gardens. But, as often happens when we presume I was wrong. What I was seeing wasn’t even a moth much less one that is after our beloved veggies. This is the West Virginia White!( Pieris virginiensis.) While this ghostly little butterfly bares the name of my home state it’s found all over the Appalachian Mountains and up into Canada. And, it’s only interested in hosting on one plant. The toothwort is host of choice for the West Virginia White. However, I have learned that an invasive plant known as Garlic Mustard somehow confuses the little West Virginia White and that the larvae can’t survive on them.

I followed the adult for several minutes and she seem to prefer my ground ivy. She meticulously inspected each little tubular bloom and even seemed to groom them by fluttering her wings over a plant and then coming back to it after it had a chance to sweeten it’s nectar.

There wasn’t a whole lot information on Wikipedia that was specific to the West Virginia White. But they did say that the female wings absorb ultraviolet light while the male wings reflect ultraviolet light.

It’s kinda hard to tell if the wings have a blue tint in the photos because I use a lens filter that blocks UV but to my naked eye there wasn’t a blue tint visible except for on the body so I believe this one is a female.

A lot of the photos I took turned out with motion blur. That’s pretty common with a subject that’s deceptively quick and agile. She danced around in the air so easily that for a moment I wanted to believe that I’d encountered a fairy.

I was pretty intrigued and followed her all over the yard until she crossed my creek and sailed out of reach of my long lens. But, now that I know that they’re on the property maybe I’ll be able to get more shots of her another day.

Mental Vacation, March 2nd 2020

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Game Of Tag” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As I sit at my desk and look out of the window the rain seems to melt the outside world.

The Gray Veil113019

With my natural view obscured by the gray veil outside my window I don my headphones and call up the sounds of warm summer day. I comfortably close my eyes in reminiscence of a sunny Sumer day. I can hear a bluebird in the soundtrack and my imagination builds him in detail. I can see the white highlights in his feathers and the dark fringes on his wings and tail feathers. His ruddy Brest puffs out and he resembles a little ball of fluff just before he releases his song into the breeze. I find myself taking a deep breath and I can smell the fresh cut grass mingled with the water mint in the creek. I can feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the grass tickles my bare feet. Movement on the edge of my field of vision catches my attention as the tiger stripe Swallowtails engage in aerobatics during a game of tag. The yellow male matches the black female as she dives and loops. She finds a thermal updraft and climbs high. At the apex of her climb she seems to be suspended weightless and rolls to one side as she dives for the vegetation. It looks as though she gave her pursuer the slip but he was ready. He had anticipated her maneuver and pulled up short allowing him to intercept her from below. He thinks that he’s won but this is her game and it’s not over until she says so. The two butterflies continue to circle each other in the air until they disappear into the forest.

The soundtrack in my earbuds ends at about the same time as my mental image allows the butterflies to slip away until the next time I need a break from the gray world of winter and I open my eyes. The work in front of me must be completed so I go back to the task… And yet, I could swear that the smell of fresh cut grass and mint still lingered in the air.
