Enjoying The Last Few Days Of The Lake Season

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Crossing The Lake 90120” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

In the last days of the summer heat we flock to the lake to enjoy just a few more days of the tranquil life. It’s been ages since I’ve actually merged with the waters and allowed myself to slip from the busy outside world. I’ve piloted small cruisers and pontoon boats on the lake and it’s nice to be able to cover the range of travel that Summersville Lake offers but in some ways the larger vessels are also a barrier to the experience of the water. But a small human powered craft is more than a mode of travel. It’s a link that syncs with the environment. The connection to the water is undeniable from the moment you settle in and begin to stroke the water with an oar or paddle. The motorboat is a fine machine but canoes, kayaks and jon boats are living beings with a soul of their own. As you glide through the water your craft speaks to you. Her voice is more felt than heard as she guides you to the other side of lake. The bond is a partnership of human and boat as they perform a choreographed dance through the liquid world. Perhaps the voyage is to track a fish waiting in special spot or maybe it’s journey of discovery just to see what’s over there on the other shore. Or maybe it’s all about the solitude of a quiet cove laden with driftwood and to spot the deer enjoying a rest in the shadows. The opportunity for enjoying this bond is growing shot. The Lake itself will soon leave it’s summer home in the mountains of West Virginia and march south to Gulf of Mexico to join the Atlantic Ocean. And old Sol grows weary from lending his warmth to the world.

Subtle Signs

As the dog days of summer slip away into ether of the past I find myself noticing the changing color of the light and the world around me.  A golden hue is subtly ebbing it’s way over my mountain. The yellow flowers of the black-eyed susans and pale yellow of wingstem foretell the turning point of seasons and in just 48 days old Sol will grow weary and begin to sleep late. Already forest sees the young bucks with their antlers thick in velvet as they spend less time with their herd and in solitude seek out the unclaimed grove which will be their kingdoms. My  fascination with the natural calendar begain as a child laying in bed in mid summer.  In those days we lived in a double wide trailer and no air conditioning except for windows that would crank open to vent the heat and screen that kept most of bugs out.  In August I would often fall asleep to the sound of the Katydids as the cool night air spilled into the room bringing scent of change with it.  The old timers would remind me that when Katydids started to sing it was more or less 6 weeks until Fall. In the natural world change is seldom as noticeable as turning the page on a calendar but instead it’s the small subtle signs that whisper clues to those who listen.

A Call To Summer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Black-eyed Susan 62020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Shadows slowly creep down the mountains in the cool of the evening. The big blue truck coasts to a halt. The solstice wouldn’t be for another 24 hours but the natural calendar doesn’t care for such restraints. Already a few Black-eyed Susans have sprung to life to share their sunny smiles. With golden manes in full display each one presents itself proudly to the like colored orb which wakes them from their slumber. The season of fire and fun has begun. Long days of swimming in the lake and wading in the shade of the creeks and rivers. They call us to roast weenies and marshmallows over a campfire and listen to the tales of the one that got away. Summer has begun. Grab ahold with both hands and treasure every moment for all too soon the chill in the wind will strip away the lush green and fill the world with amber.

Even A Mountain Can’t Hold Back Time

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Dogwood Flowers 5220c” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Traveling up the mountain in spring is almost equal to time travel. The higher elevations and solar angles seem to delay botanical spring by a few weeks. The Dogwood trees that are closer to my house have already begun to drop their bloom and leaf out. But the top of the mountain is another world. The highlands are an aesthetic echo in harmony with the bottomlands for a short time. By the time I arrived to my father’s land the sun was low in the sky and encroaching on the horizon. As the last rays of daytime sweep across the pasture and fall on the forest edge they illuminate the white flowers that grace the branches of one of the Dogwood trees. I noticed that centers were now more golden than green. And that small green leaves are beginning to adorn the branches and twigs. Even the mountains cannot hold back time forever. Eventually the season of warmth and growth comes and the early flowers fade to make room for the next progression. And what wonders will be wrought by season of the sun! Warm breezes and dancing lights in evening. Carefree days of soaking in the sun on the deck of a boat and ice cream brought to the window of a car. Long strolls around campgrounds and friends that only near while old Sol rules the sky. For in 1 month his days are equaled and the shadows await their own time.

An Explosion Of Redbud

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is “Redbud 4720a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

My morning starts with the roll of thunder echoing through my mountains. Then the sound of rain beating on the roof. The Spring storm lulls me back to into a deep sleep until the songbirds come out and give the all clear. Once I was certain that things had dried up enough I stepped out of the door and into a world of beautiful colors. One of the most awaited sights of my Appalachian Mountains is the Redbud and today it’s in peak bloom.

The Redbud across from my front door is in full bloom. ( Image Titled “Redbud In Full Bloom 4720)

The mountain road that runs by my house is lined with Redbud which is a double blessing under lockdown conditions. I decided to get some sun and fresh air by taking my lens a little closer to beautiful trees.

Image Titled “Redbud 4720b”.

These early blooms are a God send for the hungry honeybees that have been living on their stores since November. The solitary bees are out in force as well and open flowers have even brought out the butterflies.

The first Zebra Swallowtail of 2020 has made an appearance.

A Zebra Swallowtail darts over the road but refused to be still long enough for a good photo.

Image Titled “Redbud 4720c”

Redbud blooms are edible and rich in Vitamin C as well protein. For more about Redbud as a forage plant please refer to Forage Friday #3

Image Titled “Redbud 4720d”

The trees are absolutely loaded with delicate pink flowers. The pea-like flowers burst directly from the branches and sometimes the trunk.

Image Titled “Redbud 4720d”

The flowers won’t last long. Soon after the leaves form the flowers will fall away and leave the forest floor covered in pink confetti. But by mid summer these trees will be sporting bean pods. (The young pods are edible. Please see the link above. )

For now my mountain is in the pink and I’m loving every minute of it.
