Bridal Wreath

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Bridal Wreath 32920a”and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck doesn’t like spending to much time in the driveway. As headed out for my afternoon walk the headlights took on the appearance of eyes that followed me through the yard. “C’mon”they said. I stepped a little closer and jiggled a finger in my ear. Did I really just hear that? The engine seemed to growl a little and I heard “You know it’s not really good for moving parts to be still for too long.” I thought to myself, “Okay, I have been in front of the computer for too long and the Wi-Fi network has fried my brain. Ol’ Blue doesn’t really talk… Or does he?” I retrieved the mass of keys from my belt and clicked the button on the government that unlocks the doors of the truck. A mischievous grin forms across the bumper as I passed the fender and before I knew it the big blue truck was turning onto Peter’s Creek road. Ol’Blue knows the back roads well and took me to a place where we could get out of the house and still avoid any social distancing problems. Almost as soon as we left the main road I spotted a patch of brushes that looked like a small snow storm had taken place in a 12 foot long area.

The bush is Spiraea prunifolia or more commonly known as “Bridal Wreath. Once planted as an ornamental along the borders of yards and gardens it has escaped into the wild places. The early Spring flowers are a nectar source for butterflies and many other pollinators. It’s viewed as an invasive species by naturalists but at the same time having those early blooms can also strengthen the pollenators populations and therefore pay off inn the long run.

Ol’Blue must have known that I needed to see this one in all its glory as much as he needed to be on the road because it was awesome to find it quietly spreading it’s joy on the edge of the a back road.

The New Leaves

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “New Leaves 33020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The late afternoon sum smiles across mountain and welcomes my exit from my day job. The opportunity to work from home has added so much life to my day! I’ve traded a morning stop by the river for a moment of peace and quiet for an afternoon stroll around my forest. The Swallowtail butterflies have already begun to soar gracefully across my window. They’re seen only for a moment as they search for the newly formed leaves and flowers in the bushes. The open window has also shown me that the bees are out searching for the fresh nectar. Those who feed the hummingbirds should be getting those feeders ready for the early arrivals! The computer screen goes dark and I’m free to step out the corporate world and directly into the real world. The songbirds are starting to get used to my presence. They don’t really get close but they don’t fly away as quickly. Today as I entered into the trees I was greeted by the brand new maple leaves. They’re fully formed but not fully open. Over the next day the roots will pump water into the leaves and the fuzz will fall away.

The texture of the new leaves.

I’m thrilled to have the green leaves in place of the bare twigs but the texture new leaves are fascinating as well. The repeated lines of the veins are a welcome consistent pattern in contrast to the randomness of twigs that have filled my world for the past four months. I lift my eyes up and soak in all the green spots on the hill and I can almost feel the life returning as the long slumber ends.

One Appalachian Mountain Spring Morning.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Appalachian Mountain Spring Morning 32420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

My songbirds are in full chorus as I make my way to my little forest sanctuary for a few minutes of tranquility. The late March air is cool and crisp but the soil is still charged with previous day’s sun.

I happen to look down and spot the little Virginia Spring Beauty standing proudly with pink striped pedals as if the Earth was saying “Look what I did!”

The guides say that this little plant with its peppermint candy colors and generally cheerful appearance a “common” wildflower. But just because something is plentiful shouldn’t imply that it’s common. The flowers will only last a short time during which they feed some 23 different species of native bees. They also have some food value for people but I’m going to go over that in tomorrow’s Forage Friday post. For now I’m content to simply enjoy their appearance and sit quietly in their presence among the budding trees and listen to Cardnials as they sing from the highest perches they can find. I’ve began to keep an eye out for the Fiddleheads that should soon unfurl and push back the leaves. I became fully immersed in nature to the point where was acutely aware of even the popping sounds of small insects jumping in the dry leaves. Then, the morning sun casts a beam across the moss covered log that serves as a boundary market and and sun dial. It’s nearly time for me to make my way back to the house and begin my day job. But not without taking a few more shots for tomorrow night’s post.

Hidden Blessings

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Wild Geranium 32420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck has been parked for the better part of a week now. Fortunate is the one who has the opportunity to be sequestered in the Appalachian Mountains as the Spring season comes on. Even more so when that happens to coincide with my day off. I awoke to sound of the rain ebbing away softly into parts unknown beyond the ridge line. The window of my bedroom relays the golden smile of the morning sun and the birds begin to join the morning chorus.

As my mountain awakes to the new day I make my way to my woodland sanctuary on the edge of my property. Several of the robins take to the lower branches as I breech the invisible barrier between yard and forest. The ground is carpeted with life. Small flowers look up and smile where just 24 hours ago only the promise of something that might be held the ground. Among the new arrivals is one that’s not normally present this early. Geranium maculatum or wild geranium. I normally don’t see them until we’re well into April. And, this one seems to be the only one right now. But I know that where one thrives others are breaking through the leaf litter yet unseen. Blessings are like that. They’re coming wether you see them or not. But if you just look around you’ll find them when they arrive.

My Morning Walk In Late March

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Buckeye 32220” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

I tread lightly and carefully as a I stalk my way through the new plants that are erupting from the ground beneath my feet. Just 24 hours ago the land was still brown but today lush green mayapple and delicate little spring beauties are dotted all through the pathway.

But I wasn’t really expecting to see the buckeyes in full leaves. Yesterday there was only buds but today I have actual leaves in my forest. As far the buckeyes themselves go they have saponin in them and can be used for “survival soap”. The wood is too soft for construction but is awesome for wood carvings. But mostly it’s just envigoreating to see leaves in my forest!
