Humble Beginnings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Humble Beginnings 41921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The forest is alive with the scattered calls of all the songbirds. Each day a new voice would seem to join the great chorus of joy that fills my life on the mountain. The Eastern Towhee has so far eluded my lens but he and his mate have made their way to the feeders and now I have their song in my life as well. What’s more is that the forest is really turning green now. After the long dull gray of winter the new leaves just the ointment sore eyes require. By May life on my mountain could be compared to living inside the emerald. It’s on warm green days that I like to kick off my shoes in the soft grass and stretch my arms out to let the breeze wash over me. However, my trip today definitely requires good shoes as I tread lightly into the forest edge and check my sanctuary. I’m greeted by the beech. It’s a small tree now that is just a little over six feet tall but one day it will be a giant.

Image “Titled Humble Beginnings 41921b”.

Most of the twigs still have buds but a few have opened to reveal the viridescent treasure I’ve longed for. As I said earlier this beech is small. It’s wispy trunk isn’t even a full inch thick yet. One day it will tower over the forest and yield up tons of nutlets. I can envision what will look like hundreds of years after I’m gone. I imagine that it will completely fill the trail at that time. I also imagine that a person after my own heart will come and sit quietly under it’s canopy and listen to the songs of the descendants of my beloved songbirds and pray, think and dream.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The First Honeybee Of 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Redbud & Honeybee 41121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Light falls softly in the misty forest of my mountain. The redbud opened a few days ago in anticipation of the arrival of the Honeybees. And today they arrived ahead of rain. I’m overjoyed to see them because a few years ago I only had one and then after that there was a couple of years with no honeybees at all. She doesn’t seem to mind the camera as long as it doesn’t interfere with her work. She floats delicately through the mists grooming the flowers and then returning to them a few minutes later. Her legs are well packed with pollen and the bloom rewards her efforts by making the nectar sweeter. The visitation is a mark in my natural calendar. The bumblebees arrive first, then the Honeybees followed by the large Carpenter Bees and the tiny Mason Bees. And sometime this coming week or so the Hummingbirds are expected to return. The tiny Honeybee eventually decides that she’s done with this bush for now and vanishes into the mists headed for home as the rain begins to fall slowly. Which is also a sign for the photographer to get his equipment into a dry house and start the editing.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

First Glow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “First Glow 40821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The late morning sun fills the empty lake. The once trickling McKee’s Creek now runs steady and the large valves that lay in seldom seen depths have begun to hold back the Gauley River. There’s no doubt in my mind that the legend of the lake bottom has left his well hidden underwater cavern and began to stalk his old hunting grounds after nightfall. The lake awakens to stretch out her shoreline and reclaim her seat among ancient hills. A small but very furry bee buzzes along shore and rises up the face of the cliff to the newly opened blooms. The sun smiles down fondly on the small flowers warms the sweet nectar inside.
The opening of the “Sarvis” or serviceberry is a special day on the lake  as it announces to the world that changes are well underway.  The flowers catch the sun and glow brightly against the dull brown and gray of the trees and sandstone. They seem to be like little flares signaling that the main event is about to begin.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Awaiting Splendor

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Awaiting Splendor 33021” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Spring day is warm but mingled with the occasional cool breeze as Old Man Winter prepares his final assault on my mountains. The old saying goes that if March comes in like a lamb it goes out like a lion. Even so, nature readies herself for the days of splendor when the forest seems to awaken all at once. The apples are nearly in full bloom but the cold snap ahead shouldn’t be too harmful. I’ve already noticed the bumblebees diligently visiting the open bloom. And there’s more. The purple tinge all along the edges of my forest tells me that the redbud is waiting for the sun to signal that it’s time to burst forth into glory. The redbud packs clusters of buds in every spot along each little twig and sometimes on its trunk. The honey sweet flowers will be everywhere this year! Don’t be discouraged by the last snowfall if it comes your way. It’s just Old Man Winter making noise as he returns North until the long nights come in late Fall.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The First Butterfly Of 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunshine And Sweetness 91120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The loving glow of the new light washes over my mountain breathing life into the surrounding forest. Today was one of those special Spring days when the birds didn’t just sing in the morning but kept their jubilation throughout the entire day. They didn’t really come to feeders much but they were close by. Occasionally I see movement out of the corner of my eye and glance up from my work to see which one of my forest friends had come to visit but saw nothing. Bright yellow flash made me think that maybe the Goldfinch had finally gotten their warm season colors but I was wrong. It turned out to be a Tiger Swallowtail. The first Butterfly of 2021! It’s one of signs that I’ve been looking for. Now most years we get a little cold snap around Easter and sometimes it even snows. But don’t worry about the Butterfly. It actually has its own antifreeze and it will simply sleep until the weather warms back up which is usually within a day or so. But the sighting is a very strong sign that the days of warm breezes and green leaves are not so far away. There’s a few blooms open for her to feed on but if you want to make life easier for the early butterflies set out some overripe fruit. Butterflies are particularly fond of rotting bananas and oranges but they’ll come to just about any of the fruit that’s past it’s use by date. I wasn’t fast enough to get a photo this time so I’m using one from my archives.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
