Sweet Visitations

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sweet Visitations 81321” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The fragrant August air is abuzz with tiny wings as I approach the edge of the creek. Though I haven’t seen great numbers of honeybees lately they’re numbers still seem to be on the rise. They really like the wild lettuce and excitedly explore each open bloom as I watch through my lens. It’s hard to keep up with them as they jump from flower to flower packing as much pollen on their legs as they can carry. They have no cares about the goings-on of the world outside the cluster of blooms. They simply get the job done in a cheerful manner. It’s a sweet existence and they find no greater joy than filling their purpose. A life with purpose is a pathway to peace and tranquility.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Few Thoughts While Observing The Pollinators

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Visitor In Blue 81921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The tall ragged looking flowers are covered in thriving life as the sun floods through the mountains. In the wane of August it seems that the taller flowers rule the landscape until the crisping of Autumn. This one is wild lettuce. Also known as prickly lettuce and it’s blue flowers seem to draw a wide variety of insects to my Appalachian home. The slow roll of thunder in the distance doesn’t really alarm them as they enjoy the sweet blooms. I’m a little disappointed in the lower numbers of butterflies that have come to visit after such a promising Spring but I also know that nature always brings things into balance. Still, one comes along just when it’s supposed to. It’s fed by blooms that only open at just the right time and remain open only for that one day.

The universe runs as a fine tuned instrument. Everyone’s needs are met at the moment of need. The pollinators are there at the precise moment and location that they needed.

Another thing that I noticed while observing life surrounding a so called weed was that there was no fighting among the pollinators. Honeybees, bumblebees, sweat bees, wasps of every type along with flies and butterflies all working on the same cluster of flowers and all were civil to each other. But that may not be coincidence. A quick search of the internet found that some studies have indicated that the scents made by the flowers have a calming effect on the various insects that visit them. Even in my own work I’ve noticed that aggressive insects like hornets will tolerate the lens well inside what is normally their discomfort zone. And when I get a little too close they simply leave rather than charge. Perhaps the next time one manages to get in the house I’ll reach for the lavender oil before swatting and attempt a live catch and release well away from the door.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Tranquility After The Rain

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Tranquility After The Rain 81821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Rainfall fades into mist as the big blue truck brings me to the spot where butterflies play among the sweet blooms. The drizzle ebbs and eventually there’s only the dripping from the surrounding forest. Sunshine arrives in the form of a Tiger Swallowtail and begins to circle above the windshield. As I step out to follow his lead the sweet aroma of the Joe-Pye-Weed drifts my way. The sounds of life fill the air. I can hear the hum of the bees, the trickling of the creek below and the songbirds beginning to announce the end of the rain. There’s no unnatural sounds to be heard. No TV, no radio or even digital recordings playing. Just the steady drip of the water draining from the leaves and life of the forest. Each moment of peace seems to encompass it’s own lifetime. Each life should be full of peaceful moments that rejuvenate the spirit.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Race For Love

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Best Buds In Sunshine 81821” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The morning sun grows firce as it’s circle brings it in line with little slice of Appalachia. There’s no morning dew and that tells me that the rain is on its way soon. Between the prickly lettuce and the Japanese Knotweed the pollinators are having a party. The skipper butterflies are darting around everywhere and two of them seem to be playing tag with each other. Though very small they are extremely swift. If I’ve understood correctly their speed rivals that of a dragonfly. Correction.. the Dragonfly speed is officially just under 35 mph and the butterflies can reach 37 mph. So depending on individual skill levels it would be a race to behold. But these two are racing each other. I watched them zip around all the blooms and stop only to feed and refuel. They were like stockcars leaving the pits. They seemed to wait for each other before taking off again and eventually landing together on the leaf in front of me. Normally, skipper butterflies are very territorial and don’t tolerate sharing a perch unless… They’re mated! I began to understand that this race is a race to determine a worthy candidate for passing on genes. The smaller one must be the male as is common among insects and he also seems to be the one who is following the lead. If he can impress her with speed and ability he’ll win the prize and have a mate. He’ll get to be “best buds” forever.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Moment With The Sky Dancer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunny Day Visitor 81621” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The mountains fall silent for a while as the twenty-first century fails. Some unknown issue with the internet, phones and TV thrusts my back into a time when a face to face conversation was the only option. One man’s inconvenience is another man’s opportunity for tranquility. The angry sun hasn’t quite hit it’s full blaze and the morning is still cool enough to enjoy the break from most technology. I’m thankful for the fact that my digital camera works regardless of connection speed and set about the property lines in search of real life. Though alien to the Appalachian Mountains the Japanese Knotweed is thriving along my creek and the pollinators are having a field day! I think I must have every local species of bee and wasp teeming through the spiked flowers. As I move in to get a better look swift movement near the water catches my eye. A female ebony jewelwing sticks a perfect landing on the tip of a leaf. Ebony Jewelwings are damselflies but unlike most of the Odonata ( dragonflies and damselflies ) they have dark wings. The males have opaque wings and shiny metallic green or blue bodies and the female’s wings are smokey amber and they have darker colored bodies. The Jewelwing also has a tendency to keep its wings folded while at rest and occasionally flashes them. And that’s just what she done for us as the shutter snapped. Her translucent wings shimmer in the light with all the brilliance of a gemstone. The tips seem to hold four stars. One at each tip. I’m reminded of Biblical descriptions of seraphim that circle the throne of God and the world of mystery contained within their shimmering wings. The little Jewelwing is only still for a few moments before it takes to the sky in an aerial ballet and ventures upstream to a new destination. It’s dancing to a song that only the breeze can sing and only real life, ( that life not constrained to the flow of data) can hear.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
