Fences

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Yarrow & Fences 71020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

It’s surprising how much good you can do for yourself just checking the fences. Thin lines of steel charged with energy that keep your livestock in their places seem to require vigilance. As a child my grandfather would sometimes just get into his truck and tune the AM radio station to the right channel an listen to the pulsating clicks of the fence charger creating a rhythmic static pattern in the signal. It was a way of making sure that the charger was working. If there’s no clicks on the radio then that means that the cattle could get out. Some people think that it’s the barbs that keep the cattle in but I’ve watched cows use the wire as a back scratcher and not be harmed. Only when the fence has a good charge does it really work and even then they might push their way through if the clover on the other side is sweet enough. But I digress. The normal way to check the fence was to walk along with a tester and every so many paces you stick a probe into the ground and hang a light on the wire. If there’s power on the wire the light will blink. Doing it this way also gives you a chance to check for places where the fence might be saggy. Cows aren’t great jumpers but they can jump. But in the process they can become tangled up in wire and if you cow breaks a leg it’s a financial loss.

Depending on the size of the land there are miles to be walked. Certainly there’s a benefit for physical health but there’s also a huge benefit for mind and spirit. It gets you out away from the outside world and because the task isn’t really demanding you find yourself sorting through thoughts that you only partially resolved earlier. Often I would hear my grandfather singing hymns as he walked the fence with the hemp baling twin that he saved from every square bale of hay hanging out of his back pocket. He kinda resembled a rooster which was amusing because his nickname in the community was “Banty Rooster”. There were times when I was a kid that I would practice walking quiet and try to remain unseen. I figured that if I could stay hidden from people that I would be a better hunter when I old enough. A few times I was able to spot my grandfather walking a fence line I was able to creep through the woods and follow him unseen. I remember one time that I caught him praying as he walked. He was talking to God as if God was walking right there with him and they were having a conversation. Later in life I’ve found myself doing the very same thing. Today I don’t live on the farm and I don’t have a fence to maintain but I do catch myself talking to God as if God was walking right there with me. Those kind of prayers seem to have the most beneficial effects on my life. Walking the fence has become a metaphor for unplugging and existing in my natural state of being. It opens up the real me that we all have and that we keep tucked away in order to function in the outside world. That inner person who cries for release and desires nothing more than to be able to be a human being instead of a human doing. I often wonder how many of society’s horrible problems would simply vanish if we dropped our masks and became who we were created to be. In some ways we are the ones behind the fences. Remember that cow that would push through the electric fence if the clover on the other side was sweet enough? It’s right there in front of us now. And the only thing that stands between ourselves and having our desires is the fear of the fence we built ourselves.

On The Edge Of Changes

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Golden Days 63020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

A little goldfinch carefully explores the trees near the creek. He most likely saw me coming ling before I knew he was there. Unwilling to abandon the hunt completely he continues to search for seeds and insects but he meticulously keeps as much vegetation between us as possible. The breeze carries the scent of mints growing in the creek and in the distance I hear a woodpecker laughing. The sunlight has taken on a yellow tone that’s mirrored by the colors of the wildflowers. Soon sprays of goldenrod will dot the landscape in some places and create a yellow sea of bloom in others. A longhorn beetle floated past my peripheral vision and disappeared into flowers and I know that somewhere on my mountain a large buck is cruising the forest preparing to scrape his mark into the landscape. In spite of the humidity I’m seeing a few leaves falling into the still lush forest floor. By the track of the sun it’s less than a month until Fall but I’ve already seen Asters starting to open their eyes. Change is a progression of little seldom noticed events. Sometimes it happens so subtly that we don’t really know we’re in the middle of it. But if we can just look up from all the distractions of the artificial world that lives in the box on our desk or the box on the wall or even the little box in our hands we can gain a better appreciation of the time we have and what it means to be a part of the natural world.

A Blessed Bee

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Hunger 71420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

“By His Hand We Are All Fed”

The constent chirping of Cardnials can be heard above the whining of the turbines at Kanawha Falls. The birds are continuous contact with their mate as they forage in the Appalachian Forest. Mottled sunlight filters down through the canopy of Elm, Oaks and Sycamore. Most of the insects become little balls of light as they pass through the rays and I’m learning that the flight patterns can give a clue about what type of insects they are. Some float, some zig-zag and others circle. Bees fly in straight lines most of the time. So when I noticed the straight lines near the St. John’s Wort I knew that the bees were at work. I moved forward a bit and focused on the bright yellow flowers and waited for the next bee. It wasn’t long before the little bumblebee accommodated my efforts. They’re not really aggressive but I have learned to stay back a bit in order to catch them behaving naturally. If I get too close they seem to rush through the tasks and then move on. I snapped several shots before moving to the next subject and when I got home I pulled up the file and spotted the little bumblebee approaching the bloom. The first thing that struck me was the effect of the beating wings made it look like the bee was about to break the sound barrier. Then I saw the face. The bee’s tongue is fully extended. She’s so excited about her meal that she’s licking the air! Her world is one of plenty. This part of the forest is rich with nectar and she’s ready to enjoy every drop. I remembered the verse about “consider the lilies” and how God takes care of his creation. Then I remembered that we are also part of that creation and how much God cares about us. It’s comforting To know that there’s blessings for us everywhere if we can just learn to trust and take the time to find them.

Joy On Wings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Simple Blessings 80420” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Joy travels on wings of ebony and blue. Nimbly dodging the twigs and thorns she makes her way through the shrubs.

She avoids the silken threads with the greatest skill and with delicate grace rises above her troubles.

Her existence is an aerial dance through the landscape and her ultimate expression of life.

I sometimes wonder what the Lord was thinking at her creation.

It shall be a humble worm.

It shall be regeneration and change.

It shall be rebirth in beautiful living color.

It shall be swift.

It shall be the sweetness on a balmy breeze.

It shall be innocence.

It shall be loved and it shall be an expression of my joy.

Life is meant to be all these things and more. Find your joy and live in it.

Tranquility On Little Elk Creek

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Spicebush Swallowtail 81020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The afternoon sun hides it’s face behind a thickening layer of clouds and falls across the landscape as a soft glow. Small minnows gather in the shallow eddie as my creek trickles it’s way to the Gauley River. Off to my right a Grizzly Locust rattles his call on the edge of the yard. I perch myself on the edge of my bridge and look upstream wondering what I might catch in the lens. The clouds soften the light but they also hold in the heat and raise the humidity causing the air to transmit the smell of the water mint better. The inflorescence of the mint brings all the pollenators near the water. Tiny skippers of several types. Earlier a pale green cloudless sulfur butterfly performed it’s aerial dance as it passed by my window. I had hoped to catch up with it but as of yet it remains elusive. The breeze shifts gently and the smell of the mint is stronger. The movement just beneath the Sycamore seedling pulls my attention towards lower left and I am treated with the beautiful blue of the Spicebush Swallowtail in a rare moment of stillness. The peaceful serenity of the trickling water and pleasing aroma of mint combines with butterfly’s visual and and blends into a sustained moment of peace.
