Rue The Day

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Meadow Rue 70319” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Dragonflies zigzag through the air picking off mosquitoes as I stand before the sea of reeds that covers the marsh. The the still air is full of the songs of the birds. I can hear the splash of a frog leaping into the water as I move closer to the rue in bloom. It the perfect moment to block out the world and draw in the life. When I was a kid the phrase “Stop the ride I want to get off.” became a thing we said when we just needed a break from a situation that was stressful. Today that same phrase comes to mind not for the purpose of attempting to leave a stressful situation but to pause for a moment and accumulate peace. Rue was once credited with the ability to ward off evil. Perhaps the truth is that it was the process of stepping out away from the source of the trouble for just a few minutes gave one the clarity of mind to deal with the issue.

A Moment Bathed In The Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Peaceful Endeavors 80520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The hot afternoon sun floods over my mountain stirring the scent of the nectar into the humid air. My Hibiscus grove is alive with colorful wings that dance and flicker among blooms. The mother tree was one that only gave blue flowers but her offspring are blue, white and pink. The flowers seem to fill with light just as one might fill a glass with water. The female Spicebush Swallowtail has had a busy day visiting and pollinating the blooms. She’ll fly many more miles before she folds her wings and turns her tasks over to the nightshift. Gently she sails in as if riding the sunbeam itself. She takes the ambrosia of the sun warmed nectar as she explores the flower. Her life is short but sweet. Her entire existence may only be a little over a month. Who could blame her for enjoying every second of the light that bathes her or every sweet drop that she can sip?

After The Churning

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha River 80420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The sand covered trail leads me through ancient groves of oak, sycamore and elm. My foot slips slightly in deep loos sand as I step over the driftwood left behind by the last high water. The sun falls softly through the canopy occasionally illuminating native wildflowers on the edge of the pathway that calls me ever foreword towards a destination unspoken. Tiny mason bees are seen as floating duff that moves against the mild breeze. The trail continues to urge me onwards until I reach the open spot by the river. This is why the trail brought me here. I am delivered to the place where all the chaotic ripples of the falls settle into the flow. The place where the tumultuous past is separated from a serene future. Nothing is lost in the flow. The river is still whole in spite of being shaken by its drop through the stones of the falls. The debris that was gathered on its trip to this point has be broken by the rocks and deposited in the sand to be left behind. The churning that was had at the hands of the falls helped free the burden from the flow and river contines in peace having been cleansed. So to is lives of mankind. Those times of churning and chaos break up the debris that has gathered in our lives so that when we are settled we can leave it behind.

An Eastern Tailed Blue Encounter.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Eastern Tailed Blue 80420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Sweat rolls down my face as I slowly cruise the edge of the forest in the humid summer air. Somewhere in the thick undergrowth I can hear the constant rhythmic chirp of a pair of Cardnials working their hunting grounds. As I near the spot I can hear them retreat to the cover of the brambles at the bottom of the mountain. I knelt down into the cover believing that if could set still long enough they might return. Instead a small flower sprung to life and skillfully navigated the entanglements of the thick vegetation.

The diminutive size and pale blue color told me that was the Eastern Tailed Blue. I presume that she has been laying her eggs in either the Redbud or the wild beans that grow here. Her brood will feed on the developing seeds of these legumes. As I watched her pose as a blossom on the Jewelweed I couldn’t help but imagine that this was some wild fairy in disguise. The The pale blue interacting with the light gave an ethereal luminescence against the lush green background. An older gentlemen once told me that when a butterfly lands on you that it’s really an angel come to grant a wish. My only wish today is to hold on to the magic of special moments that connect me to the wilderness if my Appalachian Mountains.

It’s A Dirty Job But Somebody’s Got To Do It.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Carpenter Bee 72320a” and can be purchased or licensed through the contact page.

The sun continues it’s sacred arch over the Appalachian Forest as I await the end of the dog days of summer. The Carpenter Bees however are in full work mode as they visit my little stand of Rose Of Sharon. I’m amused by the amount of pollen that clings to their round bodies and I’m taken back to my days of building pre-fab wall panels and cutting sheets of drywall. There were days when my clothes and hair seemed to hold as much gypsum as the stack of wall segments waiting to be hauled to the build site. I smiled as as bee floated by in the thick humid air and thought. “It’s a dirty job but somebody’s got to do it.

Image Titled “Carpenter Bee 72320b”.

She heads right for the thickest part of pollen in an effort to get as much of the precious dust in her first as possible while she drinks and gathers a small amount of nectar. She’ll carry it back to her tunnel and form it into a cake for her brood.

As the bee moves from flower to flower she accumulates more and more pollen until she feels the need to return to her home base.

Image Titled “Carpenter Bee 72320c”

As she lifted off and actually flew over my shoulder I decided it was time to take her example and return to my home base as well.
