Nature’s Kiss

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Nature’s Kiss 72820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Tiny wings flutter inconspicuously through the shrubs in search of a sweet treasure. She softly lands on the hibiscus without so much as a single grain of pollen lost. The flower though covered in raindrops receives the visitor well and shelters her from the still falling rain. The butterfly repays this kindness with a gentle kiss. In the natural world there are no small favors or entitlements to get in the way of harmony.

Kanawha Falls & Visions Of The Past

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The bright afternoon sun glistens on the waters of the Kanawha River. The faint whine of the hydroelectric turbines are just barely detectable over the roar of the falls. This area of Fayette county is a land of cascading water and the overflow dam that powers the plant enhances that beauty. I could get lost for hours just exploring the details of the falls. In my mind’s eye I see a a group of Shawnee crossing the big river on top of the stones. Their world was a place of wonder. They may even collected freshwater oysters from the pools that collected on rocks of the falls and roasted them in hot coals as they look out at the mighty waters flowing westward to Kentucky, their land of of tomorrow. Looking back at the rocks with my visions of yesterday I wonder who would have been more impressed. The pre-columbian Shawnee examining my ability to capture an image and share it worldwide within seconds or the modern photographer observing Shawnee ability to roam freely with all the riches of the earth at their fingertips?

Red Ground Ivy & Childhood Adventures

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Ground Ivy In Red 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The mottled shade of the forest provides a little relief from the heat of the summer sun. Along the path the thick moss stretches out blanketing fallen logs and reclaiming the displaced stones. Down beneath the scattered raspberry canes and Jewelweed leaves reddish purple leaves capture my eye. The ground ivy has put on its summer color. I’ve never really looked into why it changes color but I suspect it has something to do with the wavelength of light. Or perhaps it gets a sunburn when the light lingers on this spot. The vine doesn’t really care for the full face of the sun. But for a time the the green fades as the red gains strength. The effect of color change recalls childhood days of action figures exploring an alien world with strange vegetation and monsters hiding behind the foliage. In those days Mount Lookout Elementary School still had copies of the Tom Corbitt books in the library and after a fifth grade book report it seemed perfectly natural that my action figures would be chasing Space Pirates through an alien jungle. Or trying to escape the grip of a giant reddish purple carnivorous plant. It seemed like the adventures of my childhood would never really end and perhaps in some small ways they never did. As I stood up from snapping photos I could see my tiny alien jungle growing ever smaller as I rose. Certainly there’s no harm to see that as blasting off to the next adventure.

Image Titled “Ground Ivy In Red 71420b “. It’s easy to believe that it’s an alien world fading into the distance.

The Sweet Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Sweet Life 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As I approach the cluster of Ribwort the tall seedheads sway without a breeze to drive them. As look over the patch I see a few more. They’re not quite as numerous as they once were but there’s more than last year. My heart smiles for the hope that the hive has grown.

Moving in a little closer I tried to pick just one of the honeybees to follow. She pays no attention to me as I get within range of the lens. She simply continues to collect the nectar and pollen. She’s very content with her life. I’ve come to the conclusion that most of nature lives in contentment because they get to live the life they were created for.

The honeybee is only concerned with what’s in season and which plant to visit. She knows that in spite of the humble appearance the of the Ribwort it’s a prolific pollen producer. I do have to wonder if the bee uses the pollen in a special way. The Ribwort is traditionally a medicinal herb. It’s so iconic that at one time it’s form was used symbol to identify apothecaries. I’m not really an expert on honeybees but I do know that they store special types of propolis with strong antimicrobial agents as well as the honey they’re known for. Perhaps the reason why she’s so content while visiting the Ribwort is because she’s found the compound in nature that will help her hive to rebuild and become strong once again.

A Walk Up The Blacktop

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Summer Daydreams 63020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The warm breeze and bright sun pulls me back through the river of time to the days of innocence. In a simpler age when the road was paved with tar and on a hot day one might spin on a heel and leave a mark on the blacktop. The roads always seemed to be lined with daisies and in a few spots blackberries hung out over the berms. I remember walking over a mile or so to the general store with a little change. Along the way I would just reach out and pull a handful of berries off of the canes to enjoy as I walked. We’d buy a glass bottle of Mountain Dew that at the time still had a hillbilly on the logo. On the return trip there was the daisies. As we passed by insects of every kind hopped or flew to a better location. Butterflies were often so interested in flowers that they didn’t notice our approach until we were almost on top of them. Then with ease they would simply flip to a different bloom a little farther into weeds. We’d follow the clusters of daisies until we ran out of paved road. That’s how we knew that we’d made it home. Hone is always were the blacktop ends and the dirt road welcomes you back.
