Time And Perception

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 3920b” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The evening light lingers just a while longer as I step out of the big blue truck with my camera. The constant hum of the hydroelectric plant can be heard over the roar of the falls as I extend the legs of my tripod. I have become obsessed with capturing the silky essence of overflowing water as it pours out over the dam and across the rocks. The secret of pulling peace from the chaos of the crashing water is time. In today’s world of instant gratification and high speed communication it’s easy to feel like you’re being overwhelmed and pulled under. That’s when it’s important to take control of the time and slow things down a bit. We all have a time machine in our heads. If you have ever been in an accident or had an event that happened quickly when you play it back in your head you see the effect of the time machine working. Think about that cup of coffee that was knocked off of the edge of counter. Does it play back in slow motion? As a teenager playing football I was a tackle. Tackles aren’t really known for handling the ball. My hands were like bricks but the one time that I caught the ball it seemed to just hang in mid air waiting for my brick-like hands to find their grasp. I learned that night that most challenges are simply a matter of perception. My perception of time had slowed down and given my body a chance to react. I have had the same experience with a vehicle accident giving me the chance to adjust the speed and angle of impact that allowed me to walk away from the wreckage by minimizing the force of the collision.

In both of these incidents the time perception phenomenon was reflex and instinct. It’s not really something that most people can do on purpose. But when I think about it, most of life’s problems are not so urgent as to trigger the reflex. But that also means that a person can take a deep breath and observe the patterns correctly. In the vast majority of life there’s more time than perceived and knowing the patterns means predictably. Predictably means that a plan can be made and a plan keeps things silky smooth.

The Steady Place

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 3920” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The evening light falls softly on the big river. The changing of the time has allowed me to reach Kanawha Falls with just enough light to set up my tripod and attempt a long exposure. I’m drawn to the rocks that are exposed as the water flows around them. The steady place in an ever changing world. My spirit recalls the lyrics of the old hymn “On Christ the solid rock I stand” as I watch the powerful stream of water crash over the edge. The flow of water is beautiful and calming from this side of the river but I wouldn’t want to be caught in it. It would be easy to be caught in the flow pulled down to the river bed. But on the steady place atop the rock there’s relative safety.

The world we live in is full of powerful streams of both news and rumors that would sweep us away and pull us under if we allow ourselves to caught up in them. But look for that steady place that elevated above the flow where peace reigns and dwell there instead.

Twilight At Kanawha Falls

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Submerged Boardwalk 3520a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Twilight falls on the Kanawha River at Glen Ferris. The failing light casts a purple hue across river and mountains. The river is up slightly but it doesn’t rage. Instead the water laps gently against the rocks. The turbines are silent and even the falls seem to submit to quiet mood as shadows wax long on the water. Beneath the surface pearch and walleye patrol the walkway and the roots of the willows on the opposite shore. Somewhere deep in the forest a screech owl belts out his eerie song to the moonlight clouds overhead. The night air is oddly warm for an early March evening and I hear a few frogs singing in the swampy backwaters on the edges were the river meets the forest. But March is a season of flux and I know that the warm air is only a sign of the coming snowfall. Old Man Winter it seems will not go away quietly this year.

Taking A Few Minutes To Enjoy A Peaceful Morning

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 12420” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the night shrinks away in the glow of the morning sun the clouds retreat into the horizon. The peaceful sky is mirrored by the upper Kanawha River as the local ducks glide in for a landing on the far side of the water. As their ripples proceed them small fish leap forward and dive into the safety of the deep. The remnant clouds marble the sky in layers and golden rays breech the ridge. There’s still a bit of a chill in morning air which smells of woodsmoke mingled with the coffee in my tumbler. On this particular morning the forest is silent save only the droning roar of the water spilling over the dam and the rocks below. In the coming days the rain will return but for now there is peace.

Overflow

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Overflow 102219” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The hydroelectric dam at Glen Ferris is well integrated with natural beauty of Kanawha Falls. The lake formed by the same is often mirror smooth. The dam is an overflow dam and with the exception of that water that’s channed into the turbines it sweeps over the edge of dam. At the right angles it looks like a hole in the river. Below the dam the leading edge of the flow looks like liquid glass which shatters on the rocks below only to coalesce again as it makes it’s way to merge with the Ohio River.

Kanawha Falls In Amber 3

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls In Amber 3” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The river playfully slips over and around the rocks at Kanawha Falls. The farthest tree out appears to be a yellow poplar standing by itself on a large flat rock. I’m amazed at how strong it seems in spite of the fact that it’s growing on bare stone. It stands there gracefully looking out over the falls as a silent sentinel witnessing the change of seasons. I wonder how many kayaks it’s seen go over the falls? How many faces have passed beneath it branches? Has it listened to the conversations of those who explore life while taking a break on the rocks it calls home?

I braced my lens on a monopod and zoomed in on the tree as close as I could get with glass and steel and brought the tree home to witness my life as well. Perhaps at the end of all things when these silent witnesses give their account to the Creator the story it tells will be one worthy of listening to.

Kanawha Falls In Amber Number 2

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls In Amber Number 2” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the Kanawha River flows over the dam and rocks mists rise from the mountains. The steady drizzle of rain has replenished the landscape and allowed the Fall colors to fill the hills. The trees on the rocks out in the middle of Kanawha Falls seem to glow as if they were so full of sunshine that it was bursting out from the leaves. The colors of Fall are a flame that enters the eyes and warms the soul against the oncoming night. Enjoy the colorful world while it lasts for soon the flames will burn out leaving only the frozen bones of winter.
