The Keys To Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Keys To Spring 41820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cold wind and rain eases up and gives me a chance to run some errands. The landscape here in the shelter of my little hollow near the foot of my mountain is bursting with life. Most of the trees are sporting their emerald cloaks and the lawn is starting to look like a hay field. However, as I make the egress up the highway that wind it’s way towards the land of my birth the green leaves fade thinner with each twist in the road. Near the top of the mountain it still looks like March in a few places. The two locations are so different that I not only forgot to wear a jacket but I almost wore shorts.

Throughout the hills there are spots of bright red. At a casual glance a person might be convinced that they had slept through Summer and woken up in Fall. The red maple is a tree that yields it’s beautiful red tones twice per year. We get the red leaves in the Fall but we also get red buds, flowers and keys in the Spring.

In my imagination I can almost hear an elder passing down a legend about the fire locked up in the tree and how it has to come out before the leaves can return. To my knowledge no such tale actually exists but if it did it would be a good one. For now, I can appreciate the crimson speckles that accent my mountain as time grows ever greener.

Sunlight, Shadows and Serviceberry Flowers.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Serviceberry Flowers 41120a”. All of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The afternoon sun gently kisses the delicate flowers on the forest edge. The occasional breeze is strong enough to pick up a few leaves from the first floor and make them dance in the air.

The wind brings a message of change in the air. Soon the cycle of warm and cool will awaken the rest of the sleeping forest.

The broken remanents of the gray shell that hid the cobalt blue eternity above are driven past by the same breezes that shake the boughs full of bloom.

At the time I took the photos it was about 70 degrees Fahrenheit but as I write tonight’s post it’s expected to be below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The oscillation of climate in the Spring causes the ground to “throw” one more cycle before the sun finally wins out. This churning of the soil helps the last few seeds that fell a few weeks ago to become situated in the ground and prepare to germinate.

The sacred dance continues on as I zero my lens on the clusters of small blooms. The shadows of the clouds fall on the flowers only for a moment before the wind moves them and they appear to shake the darkness off.

Eventually the light comes chases the shadows back into the ether.

The gray shell of rain clouds dissipates and the birds that sheltered deep in the forest began to sing as they come out and sit next to flowers.

I take one last look at the beauty of my mountains and drop all the windows of the big blue truck to let the air in before taking my foot off the brakes and idling to my next destination.

A Mountain Sanctuary

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Trout Lily 32420″and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

One of the flowers that look forward to the most is the trout lily. I actually covered it as a forage plant about this time last year in Forage Friday #4. But today I just wanted to celebrate the simple beauty of the golden pedals and mauve anthers. The nodding flower looks almost as if it’s engaged in quiet meditation or prayers. Perhaps that’s one reason why the little spot just inside the trees feels like a sanctuary. It’s full of the prayers and meditations of nature. Alongside the trout lily the Jacob’s Ladder also seems to be in deep contemplation with its hood of purple pedals drawn over its face.

I was once told that when you talk to God that’s prayer but when you listen, that’s meditation. There’s no better place for either one than here on my mountain surrounded by my forest. When John Denver said “Almost Heaven” he was most certainly right.

When The Flowers Form Constellations

Hello friends!Tonight’s feature image is titled “False Rue Anemone 33020b” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The light sweeps over forest floor and the shadows grow long while I crawl through the thick mat of last year’s leaves. All around me the pockets of moss grow thick and ever so slowly encroach on the open ground. The songbirds are calling and a little earlier I saw the first butterfly of 2020. The trees are definitely awake and some of the maples have put on new leaves that are beginning to unfurl and welcome the warm rays of the sun. The burgeoning Spring landscape is changing so fast now that one day is all it takes to miss some of the smaller changes. The little False Rue Anemone was nothing more than a cluster of tiny leaves one day and the next day they were fully open. The little white blooms are spread across the forest floor like the stars in the night sky. Somewhere in the depths of imagination constellations begin to form in the clusters of flowers complete with their own myths. The archetypes are the same. Lovers, hunters, creatures of legend and high adventure with a moral to the story. Soon these flowers will close and others will open up a new chapter in the myths but for now I have these little beauties in my sanctuary.

False Rue Anemone In The Afternoon.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “False Rue Anemone 33020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The late afternoon is already blending into early evening as I reach my little sanctuary on little elk mountain. The procession of the Appalachian Wildflowers brings a new pleasure on a daily basis. My land is painted in a matrix of tiny little dots. Some are colorful and others are white. The one in tonight’s feature image caught my attention when I noticed the delicate shape of the tiny leaves being somewhat reminiscent of a mitten. I was thrilled just to see something green popping up through the duff but the little white flowers opened and revealed the world of glory inside. The bloom was capped by a golden crown. And the little flowers seem to fix their gaze on the sun as it began it’s descent into the West.

The flowers are called False Rue Anemone and it’s one that I’ve only just begun to look into so for now I am just thankful to enjoy it’s simple beauty.
