November Bouquet

The cold northern winds have swept away the glory of the maple and oak. But don’t think that all beauty has been lost. Though the pedals have faded and fallen away long ago the rose has its second glory in late fall and holds it throughout the winter. The delta marsh on Muddelty Creek is full of the bright red berries that give the appearance of candy sprinkles to the brown and beige landscape. The blue sky is mirrored in the lazy flow of the water as twists it’s way through the land. The reeds whistle a lulaby in tune with wind as nature closes her heavy eyes. Standing on the edge of the road I look into the pool and watch as the fish come near the surface to admire the crimson joy of the fruit of the rose and lazily return to the depths of their realm. Soon the ice will come and seal their door of the outside world and I will wait for the new light.

Finding A Perfect Moment On Muddelty Creek

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Faded Zen” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue slowly rolls past the highland delta of Muddelty Creek. With the window down and the truck moving only at idle speed I can hear the crunch of the gravel beneath the wheels as I glide down the one lane road. My eyes sweep over the reeds and rushes looking for any sign of waterfowl or even a deer near the water’s edge. The marsh is quiet except for the occasional rattle of dry leaves in the wind. As I track the sound and listen to the chant like rythem of the rattling leaves my eyes come to rest on the young Alder tree. I zero in on the textures of the leaves and twigs. The rest of world fades away and for a moment it seems like the only two things in the universe are the Alder and me. Even the breeze pauses as time suspends in my frame. For a brief moment the world holds perfect silence and the snapping of the shutter unlocks the rest of the world from suspended animation. But in that perfect moment there was no difference between eternity and an instant. I had entered into nature to look for God and God smiled back at me.

A Morning Concert Performance

The mists drift softly across the forest floor on a cool Fall morning. The first snow hadn’t fallen yet but the chill in the air foretells the oncoming frosts. The squirrels still scurry through the leaves hiding nuts but rain softened leaves means they don’t make nearly as much noise. The moss growing on the fallen log catches my eye. I don’t really know why but the presence of moss has always had a calming effect on me. Perhaps it’s the soothing green tones or the soft texture. Or maybe I just associate it with the peaceful solitude of being in nature but it’s always been a way for me to push back the noise of modern life and relax. The single leaf resting on the moss provides a focal point for me to concentrate my gaze and allow my other senses to explore the world around me. Several small birds are close by foraging for insects on the various bushes. Their quick and sudden movements produce a different cadence in leaves than that of the squirrels make when they bond across the ground. The wind gently shakes the leaves on the trees in my yard and produces a rhythmic rattle while the stronger breeze up on the ridge makes the familiar roaring sound. The creek sings out it’s gurgling songs and provides a melody to accompany the rhythms of forest. At one point a woodpecker makes itself known with it’s laughing call echoing through the hills. The laughing call is followed by the hammering of it’s beak on an old snag somewhere close by. Like all drummers he knows that he’s the real star on this stage. As the woodpecker’s drum solo fades into a echo my recharging is complete. It’s time to raise my lens and preserve the memory of my front row seat of nature’s morning concert.

Life In The Shadows

The daylight hours are fairly short this time of year. Mornings will come late and evenings are early in the shadow of Little Elk Mountain. But as I gaze out of the my dinning room window the sun breaks over the ridge and breathes beauty into the little sweet gum tree that popped up in the middle of a stand of Rose Of Sharon bushes. The bright yellow leaves gave been saving the sunshine all year in expectations of short days. It’s when the days are dark that we have to shine our brightest and be the light for someone else.

Lingering Glow

The light smilies down on my home in the Appalachian Mountains and brings a warm glow to the surrounding forest. There is precious little time for it to impart it’s gift of color before the gray world of winter clears the canvas. One hundred and eightyfoue sunsets are impressed onto the leaves waiting for the big reveal in Fall. The trees cling to their glory for as long as they can until the chilly winds lull them to sleep and sweep away the artwork which soon turns brown and crumbles into dust. But for a few days the warm glow lingers and is given while we walk in the light and warm our own souls under the multitude of little sunsets.
