Peak Color Comes To A Close

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Fall Leaves 111221” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Rain falls steadily in the cold night as I sit quietly reflecting on the image from a few short days ago. Most of the Appalachian Forest was still in peak color. Deep crimson of the Scarlet Oak and Dogwood, the rich yellow of hickory, beech and birch along with all the other various tones cast against the marbled blue sky gives you feeling of living in a painting. But Tonight’s strong gale is sure to strip the canvas bare and in place of the brilliant leaves will have the textures of stone and wood. Tall boles will stretch ever skyward and the forest will sleep. Rest well my beloved mountains. In just 39 days the New Light arrives and shadows will slowly ebb as they always do.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Of Light And Flow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November’s Window 111121a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool mists embrace the mountain as I sit quietly and allow my spirit to listen a while. The little spot on the edge of my property is my low sanctuary but higher up on the mountain is my high sanctuary. This is the place where I learned to allow the outside world to drift away with the misty rain and center myself in nature. The scent of earth is carried in the mists and the sound of small creatures playing in the forest floods my attention for a little while. The soft omnipresent glow of the sun lights up each remaining leaf and in that light the forest is transformed into a world with no less beauty than staind glass. The concept of flow was recently reintroduced to me. It’s a surprisingly simple concept and yet difficult to define. And yet in these secluded spots the flow of life is found. And as difficult as I find it to explain I know it when it’s there. One person said that it’s not the river but the current within the water. So for the moment I’ll say that it’s not the light but the illumination that defines flow in this moment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Traveler. Gaining Ground

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Golden Crowns 110721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Alexandra woke up to sound of angry voices. There had been petty disagreements during this whole journey. Mostly over small stuff like when and where to set up camp for the night or the lack of variety in the menu at dinner time but until yesterday it had never erupted into violence. Captain Smith was not only losing control over the group of pioneers but he was also losing control over himself. When Mr. Granger questioned his leadership yesterday Captain Smith’s immediate response was to insist on a dual. He had even managed to recover a set of sabers from the wreckage below the falls just for that purpose. He also demanded that sabers be used because most of the groups firearms and ammo could not be recovered and that the remaining supply was needed for hunting and defense from bandits or savages. But Mr. Granger wasn’t a combat veteran and had never even held a sword before. He swung the weapon like a farm implement with little form or technique and Captain Smith easily countered the attack slicing Mr Granger’s forearm. Fortunately Captain Smith was content to banish Mr. Granger from the group instead of executing him for insurrection. He’d even allowed Alexandra to follow him into the woods and bind is wound with moss and pine bark. Now the morning’s commotion sounded like there might be a second incident. Captain Smith was very insecure about his decisions being challenged.

Daniel and Malachi had already been on the trail for a couple of hours when they encountered Mr. Granger. He was weak from blood loss and lack of food but otherwise in good health. He told Daniel and Malachi that the dual was over how and when to get back to the main trail and that it was Smith who demanded satisfaction over the debate. Malachi refreshed Mr. Granger’s bandages and directed him to go and make use of his camp and the medical supplies that were stored there. They provided Mr. Granger with ample food and water for the trip as well as a spare blanket. Daniel looked ahead down the trail knowing that he had catch up with the group before anything else happened. He was a hundred yards down the trail when Malachi caught up with him and blocked his path. “Don’t be foolish and charge in without a plan” the big man said. Daniel came to himself for a moment and then simply asked Malachi what his idea was. Malachi grinned and began to expound…

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Traveler. A Light In The Window Of Heaven

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “November Flames 110721a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

After breakfast Daniel and Malachi gathered their belongings and headed out in the direction that Alexandra’s stone pile triangle indicated. It has been several days since her group had ported and the trail had grown cold. Daniel examined the broken twig closely. The growing tip of the twig was still green and pliable which meant that it wasn’t broken by accident. He tested a second twig and found that it actually took a little bit of effort to break the twig rather than just bend it. He surmised that Alexandra was using this as a way to indicate the direction she was traveling. At that suggestion Malachi knelt down and lightly ran his finger over the soil. He placed a broken twig of his own in the soil like a peg and began to repeat the process until he had three pegs in a row. He cleaned the freshly fallen leaves from around the press and revealed the hoof prints underneath confirming Daniel’s theory. The horses were traveling single file which made it hard to guess the exact number but once a whole section of the trail was swept clear of the new leaf layer the amount of disturbance was large enough to be the group. They spent most of day following the small trail in the forest. Occasionally they would find a chevron shape either scratched in soft ground with a stick or scrawled on rocks and trees with charcoal from the fire. Daniel knew that this was Alexandra’s handiwork and felt that she’d left the marks specifically for him but he couldn’t account for how she knew he’d been tracking her. She hadn’t been in contact with her family since she took off on a wild whim to head west. Nevertheless these were the the same signs she used when they were children playing in the woods. Suddenly, Malachi stopped and pointed to a spot in woods where it looked like every branch in the forest had been broken. There had been a major fight between some of party members. The two men interpreted the tracks as best as they could. It seemed that the main part of the group stood off to one side while a smaller number of people were engaged in combat. At least one person had been wounded and a blood trail lead down into the landscape and disappeared. Daniel looked frantically down the main trail until he spotted one of Alexandra’s marks on an exposed stone. Whatever kind of fight had taken place she wasn’t a part of it. Daniel and Malachi continued to trace the group until they began to lose the daylight. They would need to camp for at least one more night. This time Daniel pulled another small box from his pack. Inside the box was a mirror and a frame that moved on a track. The box had a hole on either end. One hole fit his small spy glass and the other was slightly larger. It only took a few minutes for him to assemble the contraption which turned out to be a small projector lit by his carbide lamp. The frame held a few slides that he’d brought along however, these slides were not the typical family photos that one might project onto the wall of a parlor. The one he’d chosen to project was the same chevron that Alexandra had been marking the trail with. As soon as it was dark enough he cast the image against the clouds.

Alexandra sat on the edge of the main group and prepared to sleep on the forest floor another night. She was thankful that her bedroll had been attached to her saddle otherwise it would have went over the falls with her travel bags. She closed her eyes and said her prayers. She asked for God’s protection in this ordeal and when she opened her eyes she saw what she thought was the moonlight shining through the clouds in the very same shape as the signs she’d been leaving along the trail…

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Spilled Treasures

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Spilled Treasures” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

My breath condenses in the air and curls upwards as carefully step through bushes. I’m trying not to alarm any wildlife by snapping a twig. I slowly set the ball of my foot on the forest floor with a rolling motion and pay close attention to the sensation of the earth beneath me before settling my heel. My eyes alternate from the forest around me to the ground in front of me. The ground is carpeted in tones of gold, scarlet, maroon and green. The colorful scene laid out before me brings to mind thoughts of a treasure chest that has spilled out and scattered it’s riches across the landscape. All things in this world are temporary. Treasure fades into rust and the wind carries it away to parts unknown. Light dims into a soft glow on the horizon. For a while the forest will sleep under the pale of the moon. But this is only temporary and the colors which fell to the ground and soaked into the earth will be reborn as flowering of Spring.
