The big blue truck coasts to halt on the edge of the Summersville Dam. In spite of the cool evening I have the window down just enough to enjoy a little fresh air. I’ve been in the shelter of my mountain for a while and even though it brings me great joy to live among the trees and birds I do miss the open sky and all the glory of the setting sun. As I haphazardly park the truck in the empty lot of the scenic overlook my attention is drawn to the curve of the dam. It’s in this spot that the evening drive into the west seems to merge with the sky and end in some mythical place where anything is possible. In my memories it’s the land of eternal summer. I close my eyes and I can see brightly colored tents in the campground and the evening fires are beginning to flicker. The boats are are lined up along the shore of the campground and the smell of coffee brewed in an old fashioned percolator mingles with the aroma of roasted marshmallows. The children who have spent all day swimming in the lake are telling tales about the giant catfish on the bottom and dare the unbelievers to just stick their toes in the water if they doubt his existence. The challenge is usually met with excuses of not being able to see snakes on the water’s edge. The older kids are sitting around their own fires and listening to the soft rock of the 80s and trying to work up the nerve to speak to that special person of interest. If only summer never ended! Eventually the fires become embers and the music on the radio is replaced by the crickets and frogs providing the background while whip-poor-wills give the melodies. And in the late hours while counting the stars over the water two hands join in an unspoken conversation. This is the mythical land of eternal summer and anything is possible.
Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
