November’s drizzling rain refreshes the earth from August’s powerful blaze and the dry winds of September through October. Many of gold, amber and crimson tones have rusted to the dull brown that will linger through winter. Except for the Greenbrier. They do lose leaves and some will turn but generally they retain some green. The soft patter of the drizzle on wet earth continues as I approach the vine. Even as a kid I always found the leathery leaves and curly tendrils interesting. Some have a few thorns and others are completely smooth depending on the species. The drizzle collects in the leaves and slowly runs down to the forest floor. Most people don’t realize that in a mature forest the ground is like a giant sponge and that it’s technically a lake. The drizzle intensifies and cuts short my tranquil moment as I head for the shelter of the big blue truck.
