A Winter’s Encounter

The lonely old barn stands silently watching over the seldom used highway. The snowfall has paused for a moment so I jump out of the big blue truck for a few quick shots. Now, it very well could have been just the wind but I could sworn that I heard a bell jingle. I told myself that it was just an old rusted piece of farm equipment swaying in the breeze inside the old barn and began to compose the next frame. Then the bell jingles from behind me. I turned to look but nothing is there. By now I’m guessing that it’s somebody’s kitty on the lose and the bell keeps it from sneaking up on song birds. I continue to photograph the old barn and listen to the occasional jingle and dingle from the underbrush. I even called out to kitty a few times but no cat ever responded. After all shots had been covered from all of the angles I was starting to get a little chilled and decided to climb back up into the truck. Because only a few feet away from truck I had left the key in the ignition as usual. But when I opened the door my keys were gone! Supposing that I had mindlessly carried them across the road I began searching the snow for my lost keys. The snow would at least make it easier to track myself. As I drew closer to the old barn I heard the jingle bells again. And this time there was a giggle! I poked my head inside the barn expecting to see some mischievous child holding my keys but all I found was a trail of dust leading to a hole in the back of the barn. I raced through the brambles that have overtaken the lot picking scratches and thorns as I ran. By the time I had fought my way to the back of the barn all there was to find was small tracks in the snow leading around the other way. Very small track. This child had to be very short for his age. Rather than fight with more brambles I ran back through the path that I had already trampled. I about halfway through the path when I heard my big blue truck engine start up! I sprinted the rest of the way expecting to see my truck drive off without me but there it was right where I left it. The engine was running and the heater was cranked up too high. But there was nobody there. Having a notion that I probably shouldn’t take anymore chances I got and fastened my seatbelt. I was checking my rearview mirror to back out when I noticed a candy cane hanging from the mirror and the curved pointy hat peeking out over a pile of brush. A pointy hat with a single jingle bell hanging on the tip.

The Secret At The Top of The Staircase

The last remnants of snow seep into the forest floor revealing the old staircase. The vines and litter that coat them make for a slippery climb to the top. Taking care to be aware of my foot placement I started to ascend. My heart began to race about one third of the way up. I began to sense a trap. What would it be? Poison darts or would the huge log ahead of me dislodge itself and come rolling towards me? Or maybe the steps would just fall away and drop me into a snake pit. Nervously I take another step. There’s a creaking noise from somewhere near the top and I freeze. The tension in my legs tells me that I’ve instinctively prepared myself to spring out of the way. I began to suspect that the the trap must be that the trees will all come tumbling down and crush me. I look more closely at the next few stairs and make certain that there’s no trip wires or secret switches. Slowly but surely I take the next step and the one after that. I’m well past the point of no return as I make my way over the logs. I paused for a moment and adjusted my fedora before taking the last step and learning the secret that waits at the top. Do you want to know what I found? Can you guess the secret truth that was revealed to me? Well then, I’ll share it with you now. What I learned was… that I’ve seen way too many Indiana Jones movies and there’s nothing at the top of this staircase but creaky trees. Adventure is a state of mind that keeps us young. Thank you for joining me for this one!

The Winter World

The new snow covers the wild places in a glistening white blanket. It’s not cold enough to freeze the moving water yet but little crystal clear balls of ice are hanging from every branch and twig. Deep within the brush tiny feet scurry throughout the landscape digging for the nuts, seeds and berries that are stashed away for hard times. The bramble is full of little wings that flutter in the tangled canes collecting rose hips and holly berries. Somewhere in the distance an old crow cackles at a joke that nobody else remembers. The winter world if full of life. We only have to look a little closer.

To Go A Wandering

We’ll go a wandering, that’s what we’ll do.

We’ll find a path that’s straight, beneath a sky that’s blue.

We’ll take our time, we’ll do it right.

We’ll wander all day and into the night.

We’ll pass beyond the hills and into the dale. We’ll find everyday treasures and tales to tell.

We’ll have stars for diamonds and the moon for a pearl.

And the dawn will bring gold at the new day’s unfurl.

We’ll wander and wander and continue to roam, till path that we wander brings us home.

Winter Refuge

The snow rests softly on the weathered wood. The old barn witnesses another change of season. There was a time when there was no better place to ride out the storm. The well built roof was able to shed the heaviest snow pack and the straw inside was warm and dry even without a fire. The old cliche of a weary traveler seeking refuge in the barn of a sympathetic farmer became a cliche for a reason. In a place and time when inns or motels were a rare find, the shelter of a barn was a welcoming environment. As a child I would dodge into my grandfather’s barn to hide from a sudden rainstorm or if I just got cold while playing in winter. But after so many decades of emptiness the old barn in tonight’s feature image doesn’t really even keep the light out. And yet just when you think that it’s been completely abandoned as a useless shell you see the movements inside through the cracks in the slats. A whole flock of small birds have taken the old barn as their own and whole families are kept warm and safe from the icy blasts of winter.
