Spreading A Word.

Geese are funny to watch. It doesn’t matter if they’re in the air or on the water if one of them honk the others repeat it in sequence. Now I don’t really speak goose so there’s no real way for me to know if the message is repeated accurately or not. However, because of the amazing efficiency of nature I presume that it’s clearly understood among the geese.

If only people could operate this well. If geese were like humans the leading honk would be a beep by the time the message is repeated throughout the group.

Something that both geese and humans have in common is how fast word is spread. For the geese this is a necessary skill for flying as a single unit. If one bird crashes then they all crash. For people, the faster word spreads then the less accurately it is delivered. Which is something to remember in the internet age when we communicate faster than ever before.

I stood on the shore of a mountain lake to still my busy mind.

I felt the breeze and looked around and a treasure I did find.

The sun came down and touched the lake and transformed water that was cold.

Into a mountain treasure, a lake of fiery gold!

This treasure here it can’t be spent, neither is it saved or stole.

But it can be shared with those you love. It just takes an evening stroll.

A Quick Update On My Natural Calendar

I’m the kind of person who is done with ice and snow about 2 days after Christmas. I have been longing for green leaves and a walk down a moss covered path for quite some time now. We still have a little ways to go yet but yesterday’s revelation of the Bradford pear with it’s swollen flower buds was just the boost I needed. So much so that I decided to savor the moment and post the closeup as a second post. I live at a higher elevation and the valley always greens up a few days to a few weeks before it does at my house. In addition to the Bradford pear I’m starting to notice that familiar crimson tinge on the red maple twigs that tells me they are waking up too. The sight of these things reminds me of being challenged to swim from the Battle Run “Beach” to the campground under water. Unless you’re Michael Phelps it’s only possible by occasionally coming up for air a few times. These buds are the fresh breath I need to get through until mid April. In addition I’m thrilled that we reset the clocks to Daylight saving time tonight and that means it’s no longer dark when I get home. ( Can we just move it by 1/2 hour and leave it there?). You might be discouraged to see the snow covering the delicate buds but have no fear. This actually helps them survive the cold! I have been reviewing the metadata on in my archive to judge the dates of my natural calendar. Last year this tree was in full bloom on March 16th. By April 2nd the the Japanese Maple at the shopping center had tiny new leaves. The Redbud was in full bloom on April 14th and on April 23rd the dogwood trees were just starting to open. On April 25th last year I took a picture of a wild mustard plant in full bloom. And by April 27th the blackberries had both bloom and deep green leaves.

In closing, I know that tonight’s post is a little longer than normal and that I didn’t really cover the normal topic of taking time to declutter the mind but I do find encouragement in stepping back and gauging how long it is before the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains reveals itself in it’s milder form.

A Few Moments At Fayette Station

The traffic speeds at a frantic pace on the interstate highway far above my head. But down at Fayette Station I’m well removed from that race. Today I have made the conscious choice to take the road less traveled and purposefully slow things down a bit. The wide spot near the bridge is barely enough for me to park the big blue truck but it’s well worth squeezing to the side of the road and stepping out. My Vietnam era military surplus boots make a noticeable clip clop sound on the wooden pathway as I step onto the bridge. It’s satisfying to me because it’s only the lack of traffic noise that allow them be heard and I’m in need of s little quiet time. Striding out over the New River I can feel the breeze that follows the river’s current. When I reach the approximate center I stop and lean on the railing so I can watch the water as it flows by. I become mesmerised by the swirls and rolls of the water as it crosses the rocks along the bottom and imagine how the submerged landscape must look. It’s not hard to envision the fish darting through little crevices in playful zigzag patterns. Somewhere upstream I can hear the cry of a red tailed hawk as it zips across the canyon. I continue to enjoy the solitude of this place for while with only the odd passerby on their way to the fishing spot just beyond the other end of the bridge. Soon it’s time to free up the parking spot in case someone else has plans to catch a breath of fresh air on the bridge and watch the water make it’s way through the Appalachian Mountains. As I cross the bridge in the truck I catch a glimpse of the hawk on it’s back to its spot on canyon rim and I too am on my way towards home.

Daydreams Of A Legend

About tonight’s feature image, this is the same clump of willow trees that I have been photographing in different seasons for almost a year. I processed several versions of the photos but decided that the blue of the selenium filter gave the best feeling of a cold winter day. The image title is simply “The Wading Willows In January“.

The spray from Kanawha Falls seems to freeze in the air on this cold January morning. The wading willows seem to be wandering out of the mists as if they are on their way back to shore. The scene takes on an otherworldly feel that’s right out of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. If not for the soft whine of the turbines belonging to the hydroelectric dam it would be easy to forget that Route 60 was just a few steps away. Still, I have to wonder if there’s a monster lurking in the icy depths below. Not some “Devil Fish” of folklore with tenticals such but a real world monster. Every body of water has a legendary fish that’s more than just the one that got away. In my area it’s usually a catfish that’s large enough to swallow a man whole that live at the base of dams and bridges. Occasionally someone sees a V shape in the water or spots one near the surface. I’ve met at least one person who showed me an expensive fishing pole designed for fishing the ocean surf that was snapped off at the base and the hook was pulled out straight. They say that when the water is up that the really big ones come looking for new hunting grounds around the stumps and logs that are inaccessible otherwise. It would be great to rig up a big fishing pole with just the right bait on a day like this. Perhaps I could build a small fire to keep warm and settle the monster catfish issue once and for all. However, the real world need to be on time for my day job pulls me away from the quest and the really big one gets away again.
