Growing Where You’re Planted

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Faith In Struggles 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The large stone guards the boundaries between asphalt and forest. The summer storm has delivered a refreshing quench to the thirsty life that clings on in the unlikely spot. Or perhaps it’s not really as unlikely as it would seem to be at first glance. The stone was placed by man. A barrier to keep the cars out of forest and the forest out of the parking lot. But the wind delivered the spores and the rains helped them grow and the moss conquered a new frontier. Now the stone holds water with the help of the moss and its symbiotic fungus. It not only holds the moss but the fungus mines that stone in enough excess that the ferns also found a home. And then the tiny seed of an elm took root as well. It’s long been said that we should grow where God plants us. This sounds like an impossible task at times but when I see the beginnings of a tree as large as an elm grow on what was bare rock just a few short years ago then I know that if he plants me in an unlikely place that he knows for sure there’s more there than meets the eye. That spot is prepared ahead of time with us in mind. No, it’s not easy at first. There’s going to be struggles and times when the rain doesn’t fall or that it falls all at once and the river threatens to wash us away. But if we just hang on one day we’ll be holding that rock in place. If the little elm can make it until it’s roots reach the soil below it is possible that it could completely envelop the rock and both will unmoved in its season.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Arriving At Shelter

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Raindrops On Yellow Poplar 71921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page

Nature’s wrath lasts only a matter minutes and yet she delivers a blinding deluge that sweeps through my mountains. The big blue truck knows the road well but still we ease our way to the shelter of our carport. Thunder slowly rumbles as if the storm is searching. The lone traveler who suddenly escape from the downpour. The rain intensified and the roar on the metal roof is deafening for a moment but then softens to drizzle as suddenly as it was loosed into the landscape. I step out to edge of the shelter just in time to watch the dark mass dissappear over the ridge. A small yellow poplar that grows on the banks of my creek catches my attention with beads of water that glistens like diamonds a bed of emerald. Each one seems to contain its own little world with tiny mountains and dramatic cloudscapes. Before my eyes blue skies pour into each one as the fading thunder echoes its last outburst at having lost it’s prize of drenched wanderer hidden within his forest home. And I thank God for the blessing of shelter.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Sunshine And Friends

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunshine And Friends 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A splash of lightning foretells a rumble of thunder as my big blue truck breaks through the downpour. The storms provide a welcome change from the jungle like heart and humidity of the Appalachian Summer. I’ve had a chance to leave my mountain and run a few errands in the Kanawha Valley so as always I bring my camera. After the storm passes I consider the golden dome of the capitol building with its magnificent oaks and historical statues but there is no inspiration for me there today. A quick side trip to the airport leaves me just as unmoved. Perhaps a few spots that I’m aware of on the river will have a good opportunity for me. And there along the public stream access I find the Loosestrife is in bloom. And it’s being visited by a flutter of little skipper butterflies. While they’re typically territorial today I observed that they were quite cordial and happy to share the pinkish purple flowers. Maybe it’s the fresh sunshine after a storm or perhaps like the name implies Loosestrife has some sort of calming effect on them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #116 Asiatic Dayflower

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Asiatic Dayflower 82019a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

Before I begin let’s talk about Invasive vs Native species. Tonight’s plant is considered an invasive species. By definition it’s not not Native to the Appalachian Mountains and like many of our invasive species it came from Asia. I haven’t actually looked it up but I presume it was brought here as an ornamental and escaped. The problem is that invasive species out compete Native plants and many of our native pollinators are dependent on specific plants as hosts. When an invasive species is established it prevents the pollinators from being able to produce the next generation. Do we need all of our pollinators? If one species of butterfly is lost does it really matter? For practical purposes the loss in probably not going to be felt in the overall environment. Nature is designed with redundancy and if a single piece is lost the others fill the niche. But if we start losing multiple species then we could have trouble. Then there’s the disease issue. Sometimes we get a non Native species that hosts a disease that can devastat the Native population. Such was the case with Dutch Elm Disease. Now I’ve said that in order to lead to the explanation that when I write about the potential uses of an invasive species I’m not necessarily advocating for the spread or propagation of invasive species but simply pointing out that the plant has attributes that are advantageous as well. Just because an organism is alien isn’t to say we shouldn’t take advantage of its usefulness. Honeybees are not native to North America and yet when they disappear the world panicks.

Being an Asian species most of the uses of the Asiatic Dayflower are rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. There it is used for an anti-inflammatory, to reduce fever and treat colds and flu. Some herbalists claim it’s effective against H1N1 however I’m not able to confirm that at the moment. ( And because it’s a hot topic, I don’t mean to infer that it might help with the SARS2. I’m not a qualified expert and this is only trivia. )

As an edible, the shoots are said to taste like green beans and can be eaten raw or cooked. The beautiful blue flowers last only for one day but are also edible. This is a plant that I’ve only recently confirmed to be edible and the photos are from my archives. So I’ve not had the opportunity to actually try them yet. They are in bloom from mid summer to early fall and the plants produce new flowers throughout. We should consider that like green beans this plant is listed as having oxalate and over consumption might be bad especially for some people so use caution until you know that it’s not something that effects you strongly.

Image Titled “Asiatic Dayflowers 30220”

Another caution is that these plants closely resemble the Virginia Dayflower which is also edible and has oxalate that is thought to cause a contact rash in some people. The easiest way to tell the difference is in the number of blue pedals. Virginia Dayflower has 3 blue pedals white Asiatic Dayflower has only 2 blue pedals. The two plants closely resemble each other but are not related. Given the choice as to which one to harvest I’d recommend that you harvest the Asiatic Dayflower simply because it’s the one whose numbers should be reduced and at this time I haven’t found any herbalism uses for Virginia Dayflower. So Virginia Dayflower is best left to grow and reproduce.

That’s it for tonight’s Forage Friday. Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Sweet Side Of Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Sweet Side Of Life 71521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Sol glares down into the landscape and the thick air seems to cling to my face as I wander through the property. The huge hydrangea nearly froze to death a few years ago and struggled to bounce back but this year it proved that it doesn’t give up so easily. This is most bloom I’ve seen on it since we moved here in 2012. It’s sweet scent fills my home every time a door is opened. And every day I see different pollinators enjoy it’s gifts. The last few years my yard was full of butterflies and there’s still a few around but the faithful little skippers win out in numbers this year. Simple and deceptively delicate in a appearance they are always a joy to see. They have their favorite perches around the yard and always seem to return to the same spot where they can overlook their domain. They’re very territorial and will even challenge the hummingbirds on occasion. Not that birds even appear to notice when the little warriors manage to catch up with them. The skippers just bump into them and return to their posts as if they won the battle. And who could blame them for defending their sweet treasures of blue and purple?

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
