The Willow Whispers

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Lone Willow 20921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

She stands so tall above the reeds whispering her winter’s song as the grasses sleep. With roots in land and water and her crown reaching for the clouds she touches all three realms and commits them to memory.  She tests the winds and knows the ripples while she tells of days gone by and of times to come. The song of each bird and tickling feet of each insect have been a part of her life for many decades and yet she remembers them all and waits anxiously for their return. The long sleep will be over soon and she’ll stretch out now branches for her friends to play in as the days of ice draw ever nearer to their end.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Pinnacle Of Silence

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Pinnacle In Silence 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Only the wind sings as I approach the crystallized lake. The song tells a story of the stones touched by icy gales as winter’s breat rushes through empty boughs. The deep cold sweeps through the land binding rivers and cracking apart mountains. And yet the world needs the deep cold. Laying dormant beneath the forest litter the seed banks are woken by the throw of the frost. Some need the water they’ve soaked in to swell and open their hard shells so they might germinate when the weather breaks and the April showers soften their beds. Tiny roots stretch forth and seek the richness endowed by limbs cast down seasons ago. The deep cold is really a reset of cycle. The cracks formed by the freezing of the stone create aquifers and catch the living soil that would otherwise wash away and be lost. And as the ice glistens in the new light stoke the fire and have faith. Enjoy the silence and catch a breath. Each day the sun pushes away the shadows a little earlier and soon the ice will fade with them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Breath Of February 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Breath Of February” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

In absolute silence the frozen lake stretches out through the painted sandstone walls. Some of markings tell the stories of local teenagers who speak in tones of acrylic and aerosols. The other markings are God’s work. The latter being made of different minerals that are part of the stone. Subtle shapes that resemble petroglyphs and tell the dreamer the most fantastic tales in a language known only to the imagination. The thin glazing of ice also speaks of the sleeping world beneath the thin pane of frozen crystal. Half buried in the soft bottom sleeps a leviathan of a catfish which dreams of the chase and another miraculous escaped from the hook. He lives to be seen by those would be catchers and then to fade away into legendary stories told around campfires. The ravens glide slowly over the frozen mud ever watchful for the odd scrap of food left behind by some visitors to the ice. Their dark eyes miss nothing among the rocks. Not even the photographer who stands on the frozen mud and dreams of joining their patrol just so he can see what lays beyond the bridge in the distance.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Early Signs Of Changes Late Winter 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Still Waters 20921a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Man Winter casts a blast of his icy wrath into my mountains. As I stood on the end of the winter boat launch I could feel the chill creeping into my body in the absolute stillness of the frozen lake. Small stones litter the ice as even the very stones succumb to frosty teeth that bites at them. The ducks don’t seem to notice as they paddle about in the outlet of the creek.

Image Titled “Winter Dancers 20921” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

They continue on in full expectation of returning sun with all it’s golden glory. Nearby the the chickweed is beginning to bud and in a few days will herald the March winds with tiny flowers that last into April. The rains will come and fill the lake until the muddy, rocky wasteland disappears for another season. This life is temporary and everything in it changes with its appointed time. Cold days will fade and ice will melt. The sun will drive Old Man Winter back to his kingdom in the North. In just a little over 7 weeks well have the official start of solar Spring but already the wild roses are telling us to get ready for a beautiful awakening. As I was out and about today I noticed the blood red buds of a wild roses and even a few early leaves.

The first new leaves of 2021.

Now for the sake of honesty the wild roses will do this several times before they awaken fully but it’s an early sign that the angel of the sun has reached a certain mark and climatic winter (by the old signs) will soon come to a close. It’s true that we’ll have a few more frozen days and a couple of more snowfalls first. But it’s closer than it was yesterday.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Trapper Part 6

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Winterberry 120220” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The Trapper and the grandfather sat outside the wigwam near the big fire while his daughter gave birth to her third child inside. The grandfather spoke first. It’s been hard for her after her husband passed away. He had a sickness that could not be cured in the sweat lodge. But he died knowing that his third born would see this world. This is why we stayed here instead of going to the winter camp with our people. We had to make sure that his sickness died with him. My daughter only became a little sick and the children along with myself were spared completely but I don’t know why. The trapper listened and thought carefully before he replied in Algonquin. The creator only calls those people who are ready to come home. These were the only words of comfort he could think of. They sat in silence for the biggest part of the time and watched as the grandson quickly became bored and started tossing small sticks and pine cones into the fire. Eventually he found a stick from a Virginia Pine that was full of resins and burned like a candle. He was holding it over the fire and listening to the zip noise made by the dripping pitch. My grandson is full of curious thoughts. Sometimes they get him into trouble but he’s mostly a good boy. He learns by doing things differently than the other children. He thinks that I don’t watch but I see him well. When it’s time to build a new fire he’ll remember that the pitch burns easy and that’s what he’ll use to catch his spark. The grandfather’s eyes twinkled as recounted a few stories about how his grandson learned all by himself that twisted strings could power small traps and that polished bone was a good fishing spear. The trapper was lost in the older man’s story telling when the granddaughter stepped outside of the hut to announce that the baby had arrived. The grandfather went in alone at first and then called for his grandson. Finally they invited the trapper to come and meet the new baby. He sat down on one of the cots and the grandfather placed the newborn in his arms. The baby was wrapped in the softest deerskin and had the largest dark eyes. It wasn’t long before the baby clutched a handful of the Trapper’s red beard and refused to let go which made them all giggle a little. The grandfather thought that the red hair looked like fire in his new grandson’s little fist and being the patriarch of the family named the child “Grasping Fire”. The trapper looked on with a little jealousy as the family bonded in front him and who could blame them for the joy of new life after a tragic loss.

Over the course of the next few weeks the trapper stayed with his native friends and helped out with the daily tasks while they adjusted to presence of Grasping Fire. Eventually he noticed the looks that the new mother was giving him. She was appreciative of his help but there seemed to be something else there as well. Eventually the grandfather spoke to the trapper about how her mourning period was over and that she would need help from a good man to care for her children. If such a man was interested he would need a dowry to offer. As he said this he produced the Trapper’s folded up medicine hat with all it’s silver trinkets still attached. The grandfather now looked at the Trapper’s face with the same twinkle he had for the rest of his family. Trapper’s eyes widened. The hat was simply a way to let the native population know that he was willing to trade the silver for safe passage through their domain. He never thought that it would become a token of full acceptance into his new family.

There are many kinds of love in this world. The love we call friendship, the love we bestow on strangers in trouble, the love of family and the love of husband and wife. They said that life is short so love hard and in addition to that I say that a life of love is a full life.

This concludes the Trapper series for now but I’ve grown fond of the characters so it’s quite possible that we’ll see them again when inspiration hits.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
