All You Really Need Is One Chance

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Shy Walker In The Woods 110320” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Soft breezes gently caress the tall grass making sway ever so slightly. The warm sun yields yet a little more life to the season but that will soon change as the damp days of late fall ebb closer. The road through the park is all but abandoned so I set the breaks and step out to look for my next photo. The silence of the park is broken by the sound of footsteps on dry leaves and at first I thought that some hiker would be wandering up from the old trail that leads through the ancient boles of virgin timber. The sound draws nearer and I can now hear the subtle “stutter” of four feet walking as opposed to the steady marching of only two feet. The breeze delivers the hint of musk and I knew that she’d soon step from the shadows. I braced the camera on the hood of the big blue truck zoomed in past the reflection of paint. As she began to top the embankment that separates the field from the forest her keen ears twitched my direction. The whitetail is able to see movement but for the most part these deer are nearsighted. However you cannot fool those ears or if the wind shifts that nose. She knows I’m there but she hasn’t quite pinpointed me yet. Her instincts to hide from whatever is on the pavement has locked behind the few sparse blades of grass. As far as she is concerned she’s invisible. The beep of the automatic focus echoes in those amazing ears and for a split second her lock onto the lens. You only get one chance sometimes I thought as the shutter snaps. The doe whirls back and in a single bound vanishes below the crest of the hill. One chance was all I had. But if you’re set and ready one chance is all you need.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Moment By The Pond

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “By The Pond 110420a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck comes to a rest on the side of highway. Back in the summer the grass was too thick for me to be comfortable that I wasn’t about to step on a snake or a nest of yellowjackets. But the cool November air and the fact that the ground has been mowed changed that. I grabbed my gear and gave the remote a quick double click so that ol’ Blue would respond with a happy beep of his horn to assure me that locks engaged. My monopod made a decent hiking stick to balance my descent down to fence. As I near the pond the breeze drowns out the noise of the highway and creates the surreal feeling of entertaining a different world. The fence is weathered and overgrown with vines and dried seed headsof wildflowers. Rusted nails hold up the woven wires that separate me from the water’s edge. The sunlight plays on ponds surface by painting a mirror image of the sky and treetops. It’s a good place to absorb the solitude and collect some peace of mind as the breeze washes away the stress and uncertainty of the outside world. It only takes a moment to recharge the spirit and renew the mind. After a few minutes of tranquility by the pond it’s time to make my egress back to highway where the big blue truck waits to carry me to another place in creation and show me yet another small splendor.

Peace be with you Friends. Good night and be blessed throughout your days.

Forage Friday #81 Sourwood

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sourwood 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Please remember that Forage Friday is presented as trivia and not to be mistaken for medical advice.

In the fall I always have been attracted to the gorgeous velvety red leaf of the sourwood tree. It’s one of the first trees that my grandfather introduced me to as we walked the fences inspecting for places where the cows might try to jump over. Sourwood is a tree that actively seeks the light so it’s often twisted and knurled into interesting shapes if growing in partial shade. The official time of the bloom is late spring into early summer but as we’ll see the official record isn’t always accurate. When it does put forth the tiny clusters of bell shaped white flowers it’s normally covered in thousands of bees. For that reason most people think of sourwood as a honey tree when it comes to anything edible. But the leaves have a similar flavor to wood sorrel. They are rich in oxalic acid which gives the tree it’s name. But unlike wood sorrel you wouldn’t really toss a handful in your salad. Instead you would either use it as tea or a seasoning.

Native Americans used the leaves to settle nerves, relieve asthma symptoms, treat diarrhea and aid digestion. While in some parts of Appalachia they are used as a diuretic, to break a fever and treat dysentery.

Traditionally, the inner bark of sourwood would be chewed to treat mouth ulcers.

But those beautiful flower clusters are useful for more than the world’s best honey. The juice of sourwood flowers is also used to make jelly.

Image Titled “Sourwood Flowers 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

As I mentioned earlier the flower of the sourwood tree are supposed to be open from June to July but as you can see they do bloom in late October as well. Which is awesome because honeybees do not hibernate and obviously love what they get from sourwood.

That’s it for tonight friends and be blessed throughout your days!

Holding Light And Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “American Beech 110320a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Reaching out with all their might the beech leaves soak in as much of the light as they can. In the coming weeks the sun will cool and hibernate leaving icy shadows to rule the landscape. The leaves hold tightly to precious life giving light until it fills their very essence and they glow with a life of their own. Likewise, if we can fill our own lives with light and hold fast then we too will have life in dark times.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Groundhog’s Thoughts

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Thinking Spot 102020a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

“Come sit with me for a while.” The groundhog said as I softly tread through the drying leaves. He glanced over his shoulder to look for my reaction. Having nothing better to do at the moment I obliged the old fellow. We sat in silence for a few minutes listened closely to birds chatter. “It’s good when there’s lots of noise. It means that there’s no predators.” The kindly old woodchuck spoke. I nodded in agreement and waited for him to continue. He commented on the changes in leaves while gnawing on the acorns scattered about the base of our log and sniffed the wind. “The changes are coming. I can already smell the frost.” He spoke as he looked at me with sleepy eyes. I had to agree once more as I pulled my jacket a little tighter. He chewed another acorn and looked around a bit. “This is my thinking spot. I come here after a long day of foraging and try sort out the things that are important for a groundhog. Which fields to visit for the best herbs and seeds. What spots are good to hide from the coyotes and wildcats etc. A groundhog’s life can get complicated like that. And I have discovered that when I sit quietly I’m a pretty good thinker.” I tried to hide my amusement but I realized that what he was actually telling me was that in order to do well it was good to not be overwhelmed by the problem and that if I slow down and think about it the solution was already prepared. We just need to recognize it. Before I comment the Groundhog rose up from the log and stretched. Stifling a yawn he looked at me and said, “Good night and I’ll see you in February.” He then made his way to his burrow through the forest floor.
