Forage Friday #73 Japanese Honeysuckle

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Japanese Honeysuckle 61620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Please remember that Forage Friday is only intended to be a conversation starter and all of the information is presented as trivia and should not be mistaken for an endorsement of treatment of treatment.

Mostly associated with early Spring and Summer Japanese Honeysuckle in known for its overwhelmingly sweet scent. Some people are actually sent into an asthmatic episode by it Japanese Honeysuckle because of three strong fragrance. But for the rest of the world this invasive species does hold some benefits.

Like many of the invasive species in the Appalachian Mountains Japanese Honeysuckle was brought here in 1800s as an ornamental plant and as a ground cover. The rabbits and deer soon found out the flowers were quite tasty and even the hummingbirds are fond of sweet nectar from honeysuckle. The flowers themselves can also be consumed by humans. As a young boy I learned that pinching the flowers of at the base allowed one to suck out the nectar deep inside.

The flower can be added to salads but us most recognized as a medicinal tea. Traditional uses for the tea are centered around sore throat and bronchitis. However Japanese contains Methyl caffeate which according to the Wikipedia article may help both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. ( I should point out that I’m not giving advice here and that Wikipedia article was a little beyond my understanding.) In short my layman’s perspective is that it makes one more sensitive to insulin and that could lead to bottoming out. Which is a good reason to pay attention to the disclaimer at the top of the article.

Traditional Chinese use includes skin infection and tumor necrosis.

Eating the berries was not recommended only the flowers are used.

Sweet Rewards

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Butterfly & Thistle 90120” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The high ridge top breaks into open fields as I travel a back road that I’ve not set etes upon in decades. The winding single lane road hasn’t changed much since I was less than ten years old and riding in a early 1970s Jeep Comanche pickup truck. Sometimes my grandfather took the long way to get to where we were going just to spend time together. We could have gotten there in ten minutes but instead we spent at least an hour on the back road.

The mountain tops of West Virginia has some of the most beautiful farmlands! As my big blue truck topped a blind hill I was thrilled to the Thistle growing on the edge of the road. I’ve always associated Thistle with the edges of pastures and barbed wire fences held up by posts cut from Black Locust. I drove on for a few more minutes until I found a place where I could turn the long wheelbase of the big blue truck around. I would find the Thistle being visited by a beautiful Tiger Swallowtail. It struck me that one of the most delicate creatures in nature was feeding on one of the most hostile flowers. All it would take would be a single wrong move and the thorns would shred the beautiful wings. But I suppose that in this life one has to be able to take risks in order to win a sweet reward.

Waiting For A Friend

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Waiting For A Friend 81320” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Sunshine pushes back the morning rain. A tiny flyer zipped through the bushes and looped the loop before coming to an abrupt stop on leaf. His little eyes monitor the forest edge for the slightest movement. But not just any movement. No, this little guy was looking for a specific movement. The Swallowtails passed, the blues pass and even a Regal monarch soared past and still the sturdy little skipper is not moved. A yellowjacket buzzed near and the little skipper darted out like a jet fighter to send him on his way but as soon as victory was secure he returned to hit spot on the leaf without hesitation. He kept his vigil for what seemed like an eternity but then from underneath a Spicebush a second little skipper appeared. The first little skipper sprung from his post and looped the loop all the way over to the second. His little heart was overjoyed as they flew away together. This was the friend that he’d been waiting for all along.

A Moment Of Summer Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Beneath The Sun 71020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Beneath the sun soft breezes whisper blissful dreams. The small workers labor tirelessly to gather their sweet rewards among nature’s treasures. The tall grass suddenly ripples with excitement. Above the fronds a tail wags in delight and satisfaction as the sharp nose picks up the trail. The hound announces his success with a long bay and the chase is on. The unseen rabbit explodes into a zigzag run and doubles back to his hole where he laughs knowing that the hound will never figure out which trail is the real one. Back door of a homestead opens and the small voice calls the dog’s name in a melodic tone. Abandoning the chase for a more coveted prize the tail makes a straight line for the door and the pure joy that waits near it. These are the best days of the season and the life of it is in the moment that is that is held precious.

Fences

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Yarrow & Fences 71020” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

It’s surprising how much good you can do for yourself just checking the fences. Thin lines of steel charged with energy that keep your livestock in their places seem to require vigilance. As a child my grandfather would sometimes just get into his truck and tune the AM radio station to the right channel an listen to the pulsating clicks of the fence charger creating a rhythmic static pattern in the signal. It was a way of making sure that the charger was working. If there’s no clicks on the radio then that means that the cattle could get out. Some people think that it’s the barbs that keep the cattle in but I’ve watched cows use the wire as a back scratcher and not be harmed. Only when the fence has a good charge does it really work and even then they might push their way through if the clover on the other side is sweet enough. But I digress. The normal way to check the fence was to walk along with a tester and every so many paces you stick a probe into the ground and hang a light on the wire. If there’s power on the wire the light will blink. Doing it this way also gives you a chance to check for places where the fence might be saggy. Cows aren’t great jumpers but they can jump. But in the process they can become tangled up in wire and if you cow breaks a leg it’s a financial loss.

Depending on the size of the land there are miles to be walked. Certainly there’s a benefit for physical health but there’s also a huge benefit for mind and spirit. It gets you out away from the outside world and because the task isn’t really demanding you find yourself sorting through thoughts that you only partially resolved earlier. Often I would hear my grandfather singing hymns as he walked the fence with the hemp baling twin that he saved from every square bale of hay hanging out of his back pocket. He kinda resembled a rooster which was amusing because his nickname in the community was “Banty Rooster”. There were times when I was a kid that I would practice walking quiet and try to remain unseen. I figured that if I could stay hidden from people that I would be a better hunter when I old enough. A few times I was able to spot my grandfather walking a fence line I was able to creep through the woods and follow him unseen. I remember one time that I caught him praying as he walked. He was talking to God as if God was walking right there with him and they were having a conversation. Later in life I’ve found myself doing the very same thing. Today I don’t live on the farm and I don’t have a fence to maintain but I do catch myself talking to God as if God was walking right there with me. Those kind of prayers seem to have the most beneficial effects on my life. Walking the fence has become a metaphor for unplugging and existing in my natural state of being. It opens up the real me that we all have and that we keep tucked away in order to function in the outside world. That inner person who cries for release and desires nothing more than to be able to be a human being instead of a human doing. I often wonder how many of society’s horrible problems would simply vanish if we dropped our masks and became who we were created to be. In some ways we are the ones behind the fences. Remember that cow that would push through the electric fence if the clover on the other side was sweet enough? It’s right there in front of us now. And the only thing that stands between ourselves and having our desires is the fear of the fence we built ourselves.
