Kanawha Falls & Visions Of The Past

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Kanawha Falls 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The bright afternoon sun glistens on the waters of the Kanawha River. The faint whine of the hydroelectric turbines are just barely detectable over the roar of the falls. This area of Fayette county is a land of cascading water and the overflow dam that powers the plant enhances that beauty. I could get lost for hours just exploring the details of the falls. In my mind’s eye I see a a group of Shawnee crossing the big river on top of the stones. Their world was a place of wonder. They may even collected freshwater oysters from the pools that collected on rocks of the falls and roasted them in hot coals as they look out at the mighty waters flowing westward to Kentucky, their land of of tomorrow. Looking back at the rocks with my visions of yesterday I wonder who would have been more impressed. The pre-columbian Shawnee examining my ability to capture an image and share it worldwide within seconds or the modern photographer observing Shawnee ability to roam freely with all the riches of the earth at their fingertips?

Canada Lily. The Appalachian Native Alternative To Orange Lily

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Canada Lily 71020a”and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The big blue truck idles it’s way up the gravel road as my eyes search the dappled light for inspiration. Then I saw the bright orange color which at first I mistook for more Orange Lily growing on the edge of the forest. But something was wrong. These orange lilies didn’t look quite right. These bell shaped flowers seem to bow their heads in prayer. The orange lily is a proud invader that always holds its head high. But this source of humble beauty was a native species. This was a Canada Lily.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how Orange Lily was a hardy and beautiful plant but doesn’t really do much for wildlife when it escapes the garden. In fact it’s considered an invasive species that squeezes out the native plants. And what’s even worse Orange Lily has no food value for wildlife. There’s not even nectar for butterflies and bees in the Asian Orange Lily. But with the Canada Lily it’s a completely different story.

The gracefully nodding bloom opens to welcome Swallowtail Butterflies and solitary bees. The deer will not touch Orange Lily but they browse so much on Canada Lily that in some states it’s considered a threatened species.

In my previous article on Orang Lily I was amiss to omit Canada Lily. Perhaps one reason why I didn’t think of it was it’s preference for shade and moist soil. Orange Lily does well in full sun and I think that’s why people tend to gravitate towards Orange Lily. Neither can I recommend propagation of wild Canada Lily because in areas where it’s threatened it might be illegal to remove it. However, I did see that several online sources offer either seeds or bulbs. For most of the lilies planting a bulb is probably going to be the easiest method. Because the bulbs are eaten by mice and voles you may need to provide protection for them.

So, if you like the looks of the Orange Lily but want to support the preservation of native species look into Canada Lily. If your land will support it you’ll also be attracting wildlife as well as providing yourself with beautiful flowers.

The Lesson Of The Fallen

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Fallen 71420a”. All of the photos on this blog are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article. Some like tonight’s feature image were taken for the simple purpose of illustration while others are taken for sake of art.

In the eye of a woodturner the beauty of a twisted and knarled piece of wood isn’t something he creates himself. Instead it’s something God created but he releases from its cocoon. It’s also that such beauty isn’t formed without hardship. The giant tree which I first assumed to be a oak (simply because I didn’t actually check ) turned out an elm. The large misshapen root had to have been a trunk that was laid down by a flood and resprouted. Eventually the trunk became a root and fed the new stem until it was able to touch the sky.

But in 2016 a historic flood swept over the park and topped the ancient elm’s second attempt to live the life it was intended to have. When I found the tree a few years ago I mourned a little on it’s behalf. It was winter and tree was bare of leaves. I thought that surely it was gone and I even wondered who to speak with that would allow me to harvest some of the wood. But I was wrong. The giant elm tree was not dead. In fact it was very much alive and fighting to touch the sky once more.

mage Titled “The Fallen 71420c” looks back towards the stump.

I walked out to what was once the top of the tree only to find that it was now the bottom. The impact of the fall had driven some of the branches into the soft, fertile ground. And branches that survived were in the process of becoming roots. The entire length of the tree was sprouting new trunks. What was once a majestic single tree was becoming a majestic forest of its own. Simply because it invested what little bit of life it had left and started over for the second time. In time some of new trunks will prune themselves for the benefit of the whole but there will be life. I will check back from time to time and monitor it’s progress and maybe 30 years form now I’ll stand beneath the grove and remember the value of never surrendering to circumstance.

Red Ground Ivy & Childhood Adventures

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Ground Ivy In Red 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The mottled shade of the forest provides a little relief from the heat of the summer sun. Along the path the thick moss stretches out blanketing fallen logs and reclaiming the displaced stones. Down beneath the scattered raspberry canes and Jewelweed leaves reddish purple leaves capture my eye. The ground ivy has put on its summer color. I’ve never really looked into why it changes color but I suspect it has something to do with the wavelength of light. Or perhaps it gets a sunburn when the light lingers on this spot. The vine doesn’t really care for the full face of the sun. But for a time the the green fades as the red gains strength. The effect of color change recalls childhood days of action figures exploring an alien world with strange vegetation and monsters hiding behind the foliage. In those days Mount Lookout Elementary School still had copies of the Tom Corbitt books in the library and after a fifth grade book report it seemed perfectly natural that my action figures would be chasing Space Pirates through an alien jungle. Or trying to escape the grip of a giant reddish purple carnivorous plant. It seemed like the adventures of my childhood would never really end and perhaps in some small ways they never did. As I stood up from snapping photos I could see my tiny alien jungle growing ever smaller as I rose. Certainly there’s no harm to see that as blasting off to the next adventure.

Image Titled “Ground Ivy In Red 71420b “. It’s easy to believe that it’s an alien world fading into the distance.

The Sweet Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Sweet Life 71420a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As I approach the cluster of Ribwort the tall seedheads sway without a breeze to drive them. As look over the patch I see a few more. They’re not quite as numerous as they once were but there’s more than last year. My heart smiles for the hope that the hive has grown.

Moving in a little closer I tried to pick just one of the honeybees to follow. She pays no attention to me as I get within range of the lens. She simply continues to collect the nectar and pollen. She’s very content with her life. I’ve come to the conclusion that most of nature lives in contentment because they get to live the life they were created for.

The honeybee is only concerned with what’s in season and which plant to visit. She knows that in spite of the humble appearance the of the Ribwort it’s a prolific pollen producer. I do have to wonder if the bee uses the pollen in a special way. The Ribwort is traditionally a medicinal herb. It’s so iconic that at one time it’s form was used symbol to identify apothecaries. I’m not really an expert on honeybees but I do know that they store special types of propolis with strong antimicrobial agents as well as the honey they’re known for. Perhaps the reason why she’s so content while visiting the Ribwort is because she’s found the compound in nature that will help her hive to rebuild and become strong once again.
