Sunshine And Roses Part 1

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Sunshine And Roses 71020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The warm breeze lifts the sweet scent of wild roses and delivers the aroma throughout the forest edge. They come from the snags and barns as well as the old wooden fence. Though solitary bees the carpenter bees fill the air. In my mind’s eye I’m seeing a miniature version of WW2 newsreels with waves of heavy bombers on the move. But there’s no aggression among these flyers. In curious wonder a few bumblebees hover in front of the lens but shortly return to work.

Image Titled “Heavy Equipment Coming In For A Landing 71020a “

As a child I was terrified by the deep droning sounds of those wings. But as I forced myself to edge closer that fear faded and the large bees seemed to react differently to my presence. Today they almost ignore me.

I used to call all large bees like this bumblebees but a carpenter bee is a little larger and has no yellow markings on the abdomen. Because of their round shape I do the “Bubble-bee” is more fitting.

I probably spent about an hour watching them land and take off while they pollinated the wild roses. The very bees that used to send me running away have now become a source of peace and satisfaction in the warm sun.

Where Sunshine Gathers

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Where Sunshine Gathers 63020a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Golden light soaks deep into the earth and there it takes root. Throughout the cold and rain it sleeps and grows awaiting it’s appointed time. The days grow long and warm. Like draws like as the sleeping light awakens pushing it’s way to the surface. One by one they open and release the sunshine back into the sky. And we who are bound to the Earth are caught up in the flow of the light which warms both body and soul.

Forage Friday #65 Toxic Moonseed

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Moonseed Vine 63020a” and was taken specifically for Forage Friday. All of the photos found on my blog are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Moonseed is a toxic plant known to have caused fatalities. I have included it in Forage Friday for the purpose identification and avoiding a fatal error.

Typically the way I choose a topic for Forage Friday is that I spot something as a random encounter and grab a snapshot of it for the post. I feel that this way I can give you a more organic experience and a more realistic expectation of what might be encountered during an outing.

What caught my eye in tonight’s feature image was the way the leaves are backlit by the sun filtering through the canopy. As a matter of protocol I run the photos trough Google Lens to double check the ID because anyone can make a mistake and guess wrong on the ID of a plant. Moonseed is a particularly bad one to do that with if it happens while looking for wild grapes. The shiny dark berries are attractive and could easily be mistaken for an edible.
As stated in the disclaimer there have been fatalities. The vine was once used as an ornamental that was planted on fences and such. The thick growth habit would help hide any defects in the fence and the berries are eaten by songbirds. Amazingly enough birds seem to be immune to a large number of toxic berries that would kill a human if eaten in a large enough quantity.

Two of the quickest ways to know if you have Moonseed or Grapes is that Grapes have forked tendrils that they cling to the structure with and Moonseed has no tendrils. Instead, Moonseed wraps itself around the structure. In the age of seedless grapes at the store some people may have never seen a grape seed. So the seed of a grape is ovoid. By contrast, the seed of a Moonseed berry is discoid and has a notch that gives it the appearance of a crescent moon and thus the name Moonseed. There are other factors like the lobes and the notches but these can be effected by soil conditions and sometimes be hard to distinguish.

The toxic substance in Moonseed is Dauricine which is being studied to see if it can be used in chemotherapy.

In spite of the known danger with Moonseed history says that the Cherokee did have some uses for it but my opinion is that there’s probably less risky options.

Moonseed is also a smaller berry than grapes however I still crush the grape to double check the shape of the seed when I find a new vine.

Being Sunshine

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Sunny Side Of Still Life 60220a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Because you smiled my day got better.

Because you spoke I was encouraged.

Because you acted my life improved.

Because you cared I learned my value.

It’s the light inside you that warms the world around you.

The value of good will should never be discounted in any life. When you read the short poem above what did you picture in your mind? I’m guessing that most people had the image of a young couple. Perhaps on a special day. Or was it an older couple in their twilight years when every minute counts and the need to express love and adoration for each other while they’re still together is prominent. But what if these words were spoken to a pastor who’d spent his life serving a congregation. Let’s add one more perspective. How about we say these words to a neighbor who was always there when the chips were down? What if we become that neighbor. You see, there are many types of love. But the actions are simple. It’s that opportunity to show that person that they’re accepted and that they belong that makes a difference in their life.

Hunters In The Marsh

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Red-winged Blackbird In Willow 63020a ” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The season of the sun continues and the days are hot by the little highland delta. Throughout the marsh the heat has drawn out the blue dragons that hover and dart above the reeds. But these dragons are not reptiles that breath fire. Instead they are tiny living gemstones with lacy wings. They go above the water with their compound eyes bringing the whole world in focus. He is on the hunt for the mosquitoes as they dip into the water to lay their eggs. His keen eyes see the most insignificant changes in the angle of the sun and they have revealed a shadow lurking in the willow. And the hunter becomes the hunted. Immediately the tiny wings shift and straight line flown by the tiny dragon becomes an S pattern as he dives for the reeds. The dark hunter bolts from willow owning the sky as a shark owns the waves of sea. The sharp beak snaps as the tiny dragon shifts his flight pattern once more narrowly escaping the dark predator who turns on a dime to continue pursuit above the marsh. There’s another snap of the beak and the very tip of the tiny dragon’s wing is caught. Adrenaline surges through his body as he struggles to free himself from the vise-like grip of the bird’s beak. But it’s no use. He’s caught and his heart sinks as he prepares to give into fate. As the bird changes course back his perch in the shade of the willow he attempts to better his grip on the wing and the tiny dragon finds himself falling into marsh with bird diving to recover his his fumbled prize. With renewed vigor the tiny wings buzz to life and the tiny dragon is airborne once more. The bird just manages to pull out of the dive before hitting the water and when he looks up he sees the blue gemstone like body of the dragonfly disappear among the reeds. The bird circles a few times but he’s an experienced hunter and knows that he’s been bested. The Red-winged Blackbird returns to his perch in the willow and the photographer who witnessed the drama raises his lens and captures the image.
