The Lone Singer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Lone Singer 31120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The cool mists rise from the mountains as the Big Blue Truck delivers me to that special little spot near the marsh. The mornings are crisp and the afternoons bring a stiff breeze as the world enters the next phase of ongoing changes. I had my secret weapon loaded onto my tablet and the windows down with the volume set as high as it would go. When I pushed play the marsh echoed with the sound of a red-winged Blackbird calling for a mate. The world was silent for a few minutes and I called again. Then in the distance a faint reply. It wasn’t long before the male came rocketing through the reeds to challenge his unseen rival. It’s the melodic trills that I’ve been waiting for months to hear. He took up his throne in the upper branches and after he was certain that he’d vanquished the unseen opponent he took to the wind and disappeared back into the reeds. The return of the red-winged Blackbirds to this place marks one more little sign that Spring is on its way. In just 10 days we’ll have the official start of Spring.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Breath Of Summer

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled Red-winged Blackbird In Flight 70229″ and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A warm breeze tickles the reeds that rise from the muddy shore of the marsh. All around me the sweet song of the red-winged blackbirds echo from every patch of brush and rush in the wetlands. The perfume of the swamp rose fills the air and its just the right time of day when the sun is out but it’s not too hot. The steady breeze continues to fill the landscape and connects all things. Even the fish playfully leap from the water to feel the wind in their faces. Life is in the living I’m told. The lesson from the summer breeze is to take time to breathe and be a part of God’s creation.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Announcement:

I am adding additional social media to my network. Eventually, I’ll be leaving Facebook behind for a multitude of reasons. Even though the Lloyd’s Lens Photography page is strictly non-political I have been restricted from interacting with followers with no explanation for why. But it’s not just that. For years now Facebook has throttled content providers in general. They encourage us to grow our audience and then want to sell us back the access to them. In addition, they collect and sell the data from our interaction. So Facebook has become an entanglement of thorns. In response I have created the Lloyd’s Lens Photography Discussion Group on MeWe. We can still interact directly on the blog but starting today I’ll be looking for more platforms that respect the privacy of my followers and don’t limit who gets to see the post.

Hunters In The Marsh

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled Red-winged Blackbird In Willow 63020a ” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The season of the sun continues and the days are hot by the little highland delta. Throughout the marsh the heat has drawn out the blue dragons that hover and dart above the reeds. But these dragons are not reptiles that breath fire. Instead they are tiny living gemstones with lacy wings. They go above the water with their compound eyes bringing the whole world in focus. He is on the hunt for the mosquitoes as they dip into the water to lay their eggs. His keen eyes see the most insignificant changes in the angle of the sun and they have revealed a shadow lurking in the willow. And the hunter becomes the hunted. Immediately the tiny wings shift and straight line flown by the tiny dragon becomes an S pattern as he dives for the reeds. The dark hunter bolts from willow owning the sky as a shark owns the waves of sea. The sharp beak snaps as the tiny dragon shifts his flight pattern once more narrowly escaping the dark predator who turns on a dime to continue pursuit above the marsh. There’s another snap of the beak and the very tip of the tiny dragon’s wing is caught. Adrenaline surges through his body as he struggles to free himself from the vise-like grip of the bird’s beak. But it’s no use. He’s caught and his heart sinks as he prepares to give into fate. As the bird changes course back his perch in the shade of the willow he attempts to better his grip on the wing and the tiny dragon finds himself falling into marsh with bird diving to recover his his fumbled prize. With renewed vigor the tiny wings buzz to life and the tiny dragon is airborne once more. The bird just manages to pull out of the dive before hitting the water and when he looks up he sees the blue gemstone like body of the dragonfly disappear among the reeds. The bird circles a few times but he’s an experienced hunter and knows that he’s been bested. The Red-winged Blackbird returns to his perch in the willow and the photographer who witnessed the drama raises his lens and captures the image.

A Stop By The Marsh

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Red-Winged Blackbird 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Cattail sways gently in the wind but the Red-Winged Blackbird pays no attention. He simply lands on it with the same degree of deft he uses on the most stable of Alders. The wind is his element of mastery anyway. He rocks with the shaking while calling for his mate who occasionally pops up from reeds had does a loop the loop to show him that she’s okay. In some of the stronger gusts he bolts into the air and determined powerful thrusts of his wings he suspends himself between Heaven and Earth. As the gust dies he descends with it and adheres to the cattail as if drawn to it by some powerful magnetic field. The game goes on for several minutes until she finishes whatever it is that she’s doing in the hidden part of the marsh. Then she exploads out of the reeds and circles him before darting to a new section of wetland where the game starts over again.

Red-winged Blackbirds Of April 2020

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Male Red-winged Blackbird 41120”. All of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article

The bright Spring sun fills the Marsh and I bring the big blue truck to a halt on the edge of the single lane road. The windows hum as they slide down into the doors. I have come specially for the Red-winged Blackbirds and I have a secret weapon to bring them in. A digital recording of a male singing. With the windows down and the volume on 10 I start the playback and quietly sip my coffee. It’s not long before there’s a rustling sound in the cattails to my left.

Image Titled “Female Red-winged Blackbird 4420a

The marsh is full of Red-winged Blackbirds and I’ve gotten the attention of a female. Like most birds the females color scheme is all about camouflage. Her reply to the song is few chirps followed by a high pitched cackle. She stays low in the reeds for most of encounter. Meanwhile, her boyfriend is not happy about a new singer on his stage and he isn’t shy about challenging the unseen newcomer.

He stays on the tops of the cattails showing his red and calling his long trilling song.

Image Titled “Shy Female Red-winged Blackbird 4420”.

The Female, sensing how close her boyfriend was to ritual combat moved a little deeper into the cattails.

The the male finally zeroed in on source of the strange voice in his marsh. He came in like a fighter jet. He was so quick and agile that I couldn’t get him in frame. At one point I thought that he was coming in the window. But he pulled up short deftly landed on the cattail that was only a few feet from my window.

He took several hard looks into the cab of the truck from his perch.

I suppose that he couldn’t figure out if I was a really big bird or something else.

Eventually I turned the soundtrack off and that’s when he turned back to his love. In his mind he’d vanquished his rival.

Image Titled “She Waits”

It was only after the male returned to her side that she moved out of the hiding place and back to top of the cattails.

With the lovers reunited it was time for the big blue truck to move on. As I pulled out a final glance into the rearview mirror revealed that the two birds were perched together.
