Forage Friday #19 Sumac

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Staghorn Sumac 61319” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Safety Note ⚠️ This article is about Rhus Typhina or Staghorn Sumac which has a toxic look-alike Toxicodendron Vernix. Staghorn Sumac is a member of the Cashew family and to the best of my knowledge it should be avoided by anyone who is allergic to Cashew nuts and probably people who are allergic to nuts in general.

I suppose that my first experience with Staghorn Sumac was due to a sore throat. I’d been told by several people about how awesome a medicinal tea made from the Sumac berries was. I had a fever and didn’t really feel like doing anything at all. However, I mustered up enough strength to ease my truck up to a sumac tree and snap off a few of the berry clusters by reaching out of the window and collecting what was at hand. Once I had a plastic bag full of cluster I put a pot of water on to boil and simmered a single cluster until I felt like it was ready. I had prepared a cup ahead of time by guessing at the right amount of honey to sweeten the concoction. I was smart enough to remember that the little bristles that coat each berry would make me gag and so I filtered the pink liquid multiple times. I was told that the tea had a very pleasant lemon flavor and that it would be like drinking hot lemonade. My first impression was somewhat disappointing to say the least. In fact it was downright awful. The lemon was overpowered by the astringency of the tannic acids in the mix. In those days there was no internet so I began to pour over the books as I poured out my failed attempt. My mouth was so puckered that I was locked into what seemed to be a permanent whistle. After double checking the resources I figured out that I had made two rookie mistakes. I had failed to remove the berries from the stem and I had been way to aggressive with my heat. After correcting those issues the second batch turned out spectacular! While I can’t comment on the effectiveness of the tea as a medicinal tea I can say that hot, pink lemonade was a great description of the flavor. In fact it was good enough to just to enjoy on a cool fall day.

Aside from an awesome tea made from the berries the leaves have an interesting history. We all know that tobacco was an important part of pre-columbian culture in North America but the tobacco plant itself was seldom used alone. It was part of a mix called “Kinnikinnick” which included a variety of leaves including Staghorn Sumac. In the Fall Staghorn Sumac leaves turn a blood red. And that was the only time that they were collected. They were mixed with the tobacco to mellow the flavor of the smoke. But there was something else. The deep red Sumac leaves are said to cause vivid dreams. I have not tried this myself so I can’t really confirm the dreams.

The flowers are actually what is pictured above. Honeybees absolutely love the Sumac flowers! The one pictured is close to my day job and there’s times when I hear the bees from across the parking lot.

I think that the last little tid-bit that I have tonight is that the branches have a very soft pith and is traditionally used to make taps for maple syrup production.

Have you ever tried Sumac? Let me know in the comments. 😊

Sunshine And Dew Drops

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Sunshine And Dew Drops” all of the photos are my original work and are available as prints by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The morning mist flows softly across the edge of the forest leaving tiny droplets on everything it kisses. The wildflowers seem to receive the gift with a joy that’s unspoken as they gaze up at the awakening sun. Soon the insects begin to stir. The pollen and nectar will be made extra sweet just for them. Science has confirmed that the plant life reacts to the morning chorus of birds by waking up themselves. Like living factories they go into silent production in time with the sounds of nature. As I consider theses things it strikes me as odd that humans see themselves as in creation but separate from it. How absurd is it to think that? We need to be kissed by the same light. We need the same air and our hearts are lifted by the same songbirds. We need to change our perspective on the identity of the human race. We are not aliens on planet earth. In fact, we are the caretakers of the garden. Recently I heard Jack Spirko of The Survival Podcast mention that science has confirmed that the Amazon rainforest is a manmade garden. A garden the size of a continent! I know it’s hard to conceive of such a thing so I’m providing a link to the Smithsonian Magazine article about the manmade Amazon Jungle.

When I view this information with the knowledge that the American Chestnut was once so plentiful that trainloads of wildcrafted chestnuts once crossed the land I have to ask if North America was also a manmade forest?

I look back down at the black-eyed Susan covered in the morning dew. The Native Americans used it for medicine. It is planted today as an ornamental plant and it often spreads. In small ways, perhaps we’re still maintaining an ancient garden.

The Melting Sky And Late Night Philosophy Discussions.

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Melting Sky”. All of the photos are my original work and are available as prints by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

What is real? Are there levels of reality? What is the universe made of and what does it hang on? These are the late night questions of a group of college friends. Maybe it was the magic formula of young minds, late nights and a sense of wonderment but the occasional break between studies often brewed conversations about things like Schrodinger’s cat and the double slit expiriment. Eventually someone would would point out that observation affects the outcome of the experiment and then the wild theories game was on. Reality would melt like a watercolor painting in the rain.

I suppose that’s where my appreciation for surrealism came from. If the expectations of a physicist could make a photon veer towards the left or right then perhaps the whole nature of the universe was subject to the expectations of those who observe it. What if Schrodinger subconsciously chooses the fate of his cat. It kinda makes since until you notice that you haven’t won the Powerball jackpot yet. ( Tho obvious answer being that it’s because everyone else is also expecting and we all cancel each other out until enough of us forget to expect and someone in Indiana wins. 😉 )

So how did I make the sky melt for tonight’s feature image? Well, I accidentally proved that observation doesn’t really affect the outcome of the experiment. Basically, I killed Schrodinger’s cat. The original intention was to get a panoramic view of the clouds reflecting on the Kanawha River. However, the sensors that detect how the camera is oriented became confused and stitched the image vertically instead of horizontally. The ripples on the water became elongated and the whole image took on the melting feel. I cleaned up the image a bit and liked the outcome so I kept it. It kinda reminds me of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. I have tried but have never been to duplicate the effect consistently. ( Again disproving the active observation theory.)

For now I’ll have to be satisfied with just this one unique image in my collection and maintain my position that there is order to the universe and that order is occasionally disrupted.

A Life That Works

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Life Working” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The ant is a symbol of strength, work ethics and community. The parable of the Grasshopper and the ant teaches us to work hard and always put something aside for hard times. (Side note, in the original version the Grasshopper dies. It’s my understanding that the lesson is no longer taught that way. Which is sad because the other side of the lesson was that if you don’t take responsibility for your own life nobody else will. But, I digress. ) When I was a kid I marveled at how the ant could work so tirelessly. Cutting leaves and collecting food for long hours. Digging endless tunnels and closing them up again with machine like resilience. As a young man I could hold my own but after a while enthusiasm becomes, well, depleted. I had the energy to work for 12 or even 16 hours per day and still have a little fun before going to bed and doing it all over again but there was no joy in my labor. I began to worry about becoming lazy and falling to fate of the Grasshopper. It wasn’t until I started to gain the perspective of experience that I figured out the ant’s secret. The ant wasn’t just working. It was living it’s purpose. It’s work was far more than just labor. It was an expression of joy. All of that cutting, lifting and digging was an avenue of pleasure. The ant was custom made for the life it lives.

We as humans have a more complex system than that of the ants but the principal of finding and living in your purpose is the same. We might not all be able to earn a living at that purpose but being able to devote a certain portion of the day doing whatever it is that makes you feel like the best version of yourself will help to elevate your overall life experience. It’s the difference between a working life and a life that works.

Encounter With A Blue Dancer

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Blue Dancer In The Sun” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Summer days were made for enjoying the sunshine. It’s in our nature to want to take part in the simple pleasures that come with Summer.

As I sat down at the outside break table on my day job a living sapphire slipped across my field of vision. The blue dancer lived up to her name as she flew through the yard. Her rhythmic gymnastics in the air rivaled anything seen on stage. As a child dragonflies held an air of something magical happening before my very eyes. In all the books and websites about fossils is a picture of dragonfly with a wingspan of around two feet! As impressive as the size is the fossils that I’ve seen give no insight as to the amazing colors that modern day dragonflies show. Greens and blues and even bright red! They all seem to shine and glimmer in the light.

The blue dancer paused only for a moment on the leaf before the music that was bound up on spirit called her back into the air. I enjoyed the performance for a few minutes and soon my time in the sun was up. The blue dancer seemed to escort me back to the door as left. She’s still around. I’ve seen her almost every day since performing her routine in the sun.
