The Traveler. The Last Duel

Daniel walked alone along the trail in pursuit of Captain Smith. He was close enough to smell the smoke from the campfire lingering in the damp air. The steady mountain mists had softened the fallen leaves enough to keep his swift strides from making too much noise. Occasionally Daniel would pause for a few minutes and listen. By paying attention to the holes in the bird songs he could tell that Malachi was not only ahead of his position but also about one third of the way from the top of the ridges and to the Northwest where he could avoid the sun showing his silhouette. He could also tell that the settlers were only a few ridges away and still stationary. Daniel reviewed Malachi’s plan over and in his head and stopped walking just outside of the camp where he could stay out of sight until Malachi gave the signal for him to attempt to join the group.

Captain Smith was a captain in name only. In fact he’d never advanced above the rank of corporal. He was well versed in fighting skills and troop movements as well as general tactics but he had no gift for actual leadership. It was that very shortcoming that haunted him in every endeavor that he undertook. He simply couldn’t inspire his followers most of which were farmers and their families hoping for a land grant out west. They were pacifists for the most part but they had just about reached their limits with Captain Smith. They were weeks behind schedule, lost most of their possessions at the falls and now most of them were convinced that Smith’s shortcut had left them completely lost. They had paid for a confident guide to lead them but what they got was a conman who’d fell victim to his own con. Today enough of the party had chosen to elect a new leader that Smith was outraged. Alexandra was among those who had decided that enough was enough.

Daniel was having trouble restraining himself when he finally heard Malachi’s signal. Two crow calls followed by a whip-poor-will. An experienced woodsman might notice that the call was out of place for this time of year and time of day but the casual observer would not notice. Daniel checked the straps on his gear and settled his nerves and stepped into the pathway. He proceeded into the camp as if he was just passing through and gave a friendly “Hello in the camp” call as he got near. Alexandra looked up and knew immediately who was coming up the path in spite of the European style cloak. When Captain Smith saw the stranger he quickly questioned him. Daniel stated that he he always took this trail to the Hospitality House. He knew that this was where the group had hoped to reach days ago. That was when Alexandra spoke up and asked to go along with him. About eighty percent of group began to ask him to guide them. Once again Captain Smith’s fragile ego couldn’t withstand the challenge and he blurted out for Daniel to engage in a dual. Daniel had expected this and was actually counting on it. He readily agreed insisting that the winner gain the leadership position of the group. Captain Smith called for his sabers but Daniel refused his stating that he would use his staff while revealing the triangular tip. Daniel quoted from an obscure rule in dualing that gave him the right to chose his own weapons. The two men squared off and Smith made the first move lunging with the saber. Daniel simply pivoted allowing the saber to pass harmlessly past his chest while countering with a jab to Smith’s ribs with the knob of his staff. To Smith’s credit he took the blow that would have crippled most men in stride and brought his Saber down hard on Daniel’s forearm. There was a crunch and the saber stuck in place. Daniel made no expression on his face as the hard knob of his stick struck the flat of Smith’s sword breaking it in half. Smith was stunned. That cut should have taken Daniel’s arm off but he barely noticed. Daniel wasted no time sweeping Smith’s feet out from under him and sending him to the forest floor. A simple turn of the staff and the triangular spike was at Smith’s throat. “Pease yield” Daniel spoke calmly. Smith’s eyes shifted to the members of the group who had just witnessed his defeat. He relented. Alexandra ran to Daniel and took ahold of the arm that still had the broken saber blade embedded in it. Daniel raised the arm allowing the sleeve of his shirt to fall back and revealed the bundle of sticks bound to his arm by a strip of Malachi’s fur jacket. The crunching sound they heard was the top layer of sticks breaking while the second, thicker layer had caught and bound the blade. Cheater! Smith shouted as he took advantage of Daniel’s distraction and with a single motion he rolled out from under Daniel’s spike and grabbed the remaining eighteen inch section of broken saber. Malachi’s musket made thunder from his unseen position and for the second time saved Daniel’s life.

Soon after the duel Malachi and Daniel lead the party of settlers to the Hospitality House where they were able to resupply and continue the journey West. However, Alexandra returned home with Daniel and they were married. Malachi remained in the mountains and enjoyed the simple life of a trapper. Occasionally he would bring his furs and things into town and reconnect with Daniel. They did collaborate on a few more adventures together.. but let’s save those stories for later.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

After The Storm

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Still Standing 102421” and is available for purchase by clicking on the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

I visited one of my favorite trees a few days ago. The ancient Sycamore that overlooks the Kessler Cross Lanes area. This tree is absolutely huge. It’s on private property so I only admire it from the public road and I’m not able to actually measure the base of the tree but I’ve seen two cows laying beneath it end to end and together they were just a little longer than the tree is wide. The limbs of this tree are “timber sized”.

You can tell that the old tree has weathered many storms. There’s no real way to tell exactly how tall it might have been and even the large limbs have been broken and lost significant portions. But the old tree just keeps going. No matter how battered and broken by storms it is that tree just keeps growing. The roots must be just as large and well anchored.

If a person lives long enough they’re going to tested by life’s storms. We’re going to be battered and broken and loss will always be part of it. But that’s only half of the story. Because if our roots are deep enough and we’ll anchored then there’s going to be a comeback. We just need to keep reaching and growing. Survival is simply not being torn down by life’s storms. Winning is when you don’t let them stop you from growing.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Vist To Ghost Forest At Salmon Run

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Progression Of The Fade 102121” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There is a stillness in the void that was the lake just a few weeks ago. The depths have faded into a trickle and revealed the hiding place of the ones that got away. I haven’t visited this part of the lake since they started charging admission onto the parking lot. It’s not really that I’m bothered by a parking fee. It’s just not practical for me because I only spend a few minutes per trip and so I went to other places this year instead. But in the off season they stop charging and I happened to be close by do I visited the area. The roots and stumps of a ghost forest are just the thing for an October outing. The winter pool landscape offers a variety of textures and the tracks of the wildlife is easy to find in the soft muddy bottom. As I sit quietly on the edge of yesterday’s landscape I can almost hear the voices of those who passed along the forgotten pathways. The old creek is still there and with the mind’s eye I see the old stumps transformed into their former glory and once again stretch out to touch the sky along the rocky banks of the creek. A young boy strolls to edge of the water and tosses in a hook at the end of a cane pole. He has a cork for a bobber and no need for a fancy reel. Perhaps the line is made from a few strands of horse hair collected from a mane or tail. The natural fiber blends well into the environment and almost disappears in the water. The one modem piece of equipment is the small bell that’s tied securely to the tip of the pole. The barefooted boy sets his pole and leans back against the tree but he’s barely settled when the bell rings. He levers the fish from the water and places in his hand woven krill bag. He looks up, smiles and gives a friendly wave at me across almost a century of seasons before vanishing completely. The lake bottom holds a thousand such memories as does almost every spot in these mountains. All you need to see the story is to be still and look for them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Meaning of A Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Magic 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There’s definitely something to be said for those times when the outside world can’t really reach you. When you can simply exist as part of creation without a particular schedule of tasks to complete. It’s amazing what a human being can be when the chains of society fall away and rattle to the ground. Looking into the world instead of at the world comes within reach. Photographers are supposed to be mindful of time. We’re told that our magic power is to freeze time and find the meaning of a moment. It’s also said that life as we experience it on Earth is a series of moments. Therefore, if each life has a moment then it has a meaning. But if we allow those moments to be cluttered with too many outside demands then the meaning is obscure and we find ourselves searching. We try fit things into that moment that doesn’t belong there. We tell ourselves that because the clutter fills the spot where the meaningfulness would be that we’ve accomplished something. And thus because the space has been filled with something we repeat repeat the pattern of substitution over and over not realizing that there was something more to it than just filling the space. And yet on a subconscious level we instinctively know that it wasn’t satisfying. The result is that we lose our peace. As I said, photographers are supposed to find the meaning in a moment. But here’s the catch. Only you can know what your moment is meant to be. We can only find it when it’s in its spot. So take a little time and push the outside world away. Stand under the sky. Flow with water and feel the sun. And in that tranquil moment let the meaning reveal itself.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

A Fish Tale For October 2021

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Touching The Surface 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A gentle wind sweeps across the big river in early Fall. It’s slightest touch causes the ripples to form on the surface. To me they resemble tiny little dunes. Above the overflow dam the river’s surface normally is normally a perfect mirror of the sky but the wind brings a minor distortion. The eddies near the edge carry a fallen leaf in their backflow. It sails along content with the change in destination. Between the bright reflections of the clouds in the sky I can see a shadow lurking above battered branches and stones at the bottom. I know what he’s thinking. “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.” The montra is the same for all hunters and certain athletes. The idea is that a twitch offers a chance to err and miss the target. The day is often won by perfect timing rather than a sudden burst. In one fluid flip of his powerful tail he breeches the surface slightly with jaws spread wide and takes the leaf to the murky depths. The only sound is a subtle “bloop” rather than a loud splash as he rolls back down with his prize and leaves ripples of his own. Not being a vegan fish he immediately released the leaf to resume its journey against the main current. The winner of the day was the leaf. I’d hoped to catch the fish in mid air dramatically breaching the surface and the fish had hoped to fill his belly with a free meal. Perhaps the next time at least one of us will be successful.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
