The Meaning of A Moment

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Magic 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

There’s definitely something to be said for those times when the outside world can’t really reach you. When you can simply exist as part of creation without a particular schedule of tasks to complete. It’s amazing what a human being can be when the chains of society fall away and rattle to the ground. Looking into the world instead of at the world comes within reach. Photographers are supposed to be mindful of time. We’re told that our magic power is to freeze time and find the meaning of a moment. It’s also said that life as we experience it on Earth is a series of moments. Therefore, if each life has a moment then it has a meaning. But if we allow those moments to be cluttered with too many outside demands then the meaning is obscure and we find ourselves searching. We try fit things into that moment that doesn’t belong there. We tell ourselves that because the clutter fills the spot where the meaningfulness would be that we’ve accomplished something. And thus because the space has been filled with something we repeat repeat the pattern of substitution over and over not realizing that there was something more to it than just filling the space. And yet on a subconscious level we instinctively know that it wasn’t satisfying. The result is that we lose our peace. As I said, photographers are supposed to find the meaning in a moment. But here’s the catch. Only you can know what your moment is meant to be. We can only find it when it’s in its spot. So take a little time and push the outside world away. Stand under the sky. Flow with water and feel the sun. And in that tranquil moment let the meaning reveal itself.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Catching The Wind

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Carnifex Ferry Overlook 100620a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Standing on the edge of the mountain at the Carnifex Ferry Overlook and gazing down to the Gauley River certainly gives me the feeling of flight. I’ve written before that as a child I would open up my jacket and pretend that I could catch the wind and sail like a kite. But of course the fantasy was decades before wing suits and the jet pack was in its infancy. But call of the horizon was strong and in my childhood dreams were plans of paper hang gliders and trash bags modified to become hot air balloons. Little did I know that I would live to see these things become more of a reality. Well, maybe not the trash bags but helium balloons and lawn chairs were close enough to count. For now I’ll have to settle for looking out over the edge of a cliff and feeling the wind on my face and perhaps opening a jacket to catch the wind when nobody is looking to see a fullgrown man pretend to fly. And of course in my dreams I’ll build all kinds of crazy contraptions in order to get airborne. In fact I think it’s time to go work on that now. Good night friends, be blessed and maybe even catch the wind in your dreams tonight.

Playing On The Gauley River

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Morning Play On The Gauley River 111619” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The mists rise early on the Gauley River foretelling an oncoming rain. The birds scramble to gather food and thicken their nests against cool damp air that comes with winter in these mountains.  As the water laps over the painted sandstone pebbles I realize than my breathing has slowed to match the sounds of ripples as the river ebbs and flows over the river’s edge.  The blue mountains peek out over the tree tops to observe the game as I gather smooth stones one at time and skim them across the surface of the river.

There’s something to be said for maintaining simplicity in your life.  The uncomplicated act of casting a little round stone into the flow in an effort to make it jump and dance pushes away all of the chaos that comes with outside world.  In all of nature the importance of playing in the life of adults is obvious.  It doesn’t really have to be a demanding game . There’s no need for a point system and you don’t really need competition.  You just need it to occupy enough of your mind to push back the demands on your life’s energy.
It doesn’t matter if it’s skipping stones or tossing cards into a hat. It’s a little way to take back part of your ownership of life.

A Mist Covered Morning On Three Rivers

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Waiting On A Train” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

As the morning light fills the world a thick fog flows down the mountain and pools over the three rivers. I pull the big blue truck off of the road and jump out for a few shots. The water birds turn to greet the sun as it lights up the valley. The train doesn’t use the bridge in the distance but in my spirit I can hear the faded echoes of the train’s horn and the rumbling of the thunderous wheels that passed by in a forgotten age. The trees were just starting to show their colors and my morning coffee shielded me from the penetrating cold carried in the mists. As I stood on the bank of the Kanawha River looking to where it joins with the Gauley River and the New River I had to thank God for placing me in these mountains where every day is a new creation and every moment is a work of art.

A June Wedding For The Gauley River.

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Gauley River In Her Veil” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Gauley River wears a veil of mist as she marches forward to meet the New River and become the Kanawha River. She’s adorned with the reflections of the trees that stand as witnesses to her joining. In the middle of her waters is the remnant of the original bridge that was made of wood and stone. When I have time to stop and catch a breath the old foundation is one of those things that I like to focus on. The cut stone appears to be held together with nothing but gravity. Even the worst flooding in one-thousand years wasn’t enough to erase the history of the old foundation.

A closer view of the original bridge foundation. It seems to be held together by the sheer mass of the stones .

As I continue to join the trees in witnessing the marriage of the Gauley River and the New River the water’s surface is suddenly alive with small V shaped wakes as a school of bluegill feed on the surface.

Upstream I can see that the fog has begun to thicken and fill the valley. The opportunity for photos will soon pass. I raise my lens and capture the pageantry of nature.

The evening sun slips below the ridge and it’s time for my big blue truck to complete the trek home.
