Reflections On An October Morning

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reflections On An October Morning 100421a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The lid pops open on my thermos releasing the aroma of fresh coffee in the big blue truck. Mists rise slowly from the mountains that admire themselves in their reflection on surface of the big river. The lone cormorant peacefully glides just below the mirror of the water’s surface. Just before it dives to the unseen world below I noticed the rusty tinge in the mountains. The changing season is well underway. I look forward to the brilliant yellows, reds and oranges of the Appalachian Fall. This time of year makes me crave the smell of fresh split firewood a flannel shirt and smooth feeling of a hickory handle on an old fashioned axe. I picture days past of the work party gathering a truckload of firewood from the tree that fell last year. The droning of a chainsaw and banter of friends as the once mighty oak is parted out to the different houses. We have many houses among friends but only one home and one family. Later in the day the work is done and the pickup trucks parked in a row. The tailgate is dropped for lunch and the radio is tuned into the game. Small piles of sawdust are scattered on the ground as the last load of wood is carried out. It felt like work back then but it was more than just putting up wood for winter. It was a gift of time together and making of memories.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

One The Edge Of Transformation

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “On The Edge Of Transformation 100421” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The crisp morning air brings the scent of rain mingled with the earthy aroma of fallen leaves as I look at back of Kanawha Falls. I’ve learned that the little clump of trees that cling to the rocks below the overflow dam are a pretty accurate indicator of what the season of color will bring. They’re among the first to change color and the more leaves they have when they change, the better the colors will be in the surrounding area. Of course the rain and wavelength of light also play a huge role in the show but these tend to tell us what to expect.

The Appalachian Fall is as beautiful as the Spring. To me it seems like the setting sun leaves a little bit of itself on the leaves every day until they all finally drop. Tones of gold and amber blend together with shades of crimson to make the mountains into a living sunset. If you live in the right spots those colors will reflect into your open window and transform your room as well. And the smell of Fall is more than rain and leaves. The smoke from wood burning stoves and fireplaces drift through the hills and you can easily envision the owner of that harth sipping coffee by the firelight on an early morning. Perhaps as a moment of reflection before putting on those boots and heading out for a long scouting hike to prepare for hunting season. The aroma of Autumn is also the canning of beans and other garden favorites throughout the day and a steaming bowl of chili in the evening. It’s a great day to be alive and living in the mountains.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Cloud Mines

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Morning Reflections 100421a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The sun rises up from it’s cozy place behind the mountains to illuminate the three rivers and wake the clouds. As a child I had the fantasy that in addition to coal our mountains also had cloud mines. Some days the miners dug out the coal and other days they would hit a run of clouds and you could see the clouds that they mined rising from vents in the hills. Sometimes the clouds would get coal dust on them the angels would clean them by making it rain. Once all the gray and black was rinsed away we’d have fluffy white clouds again. To a small child who lives in the Appalachian Mountains this was a real possibility. The whole world is made of wonderment and magic.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Sunshine and rivers are among the best experiences on earth. It’s a chance to pause and recharge your mind and spirit as well as the body. With that said, I’m taking a little break tonight to refresh myself and rest a bit. We’ll pick up our Forage Friday posts next week “Lord willing” and I do plan a regular post tomorrow night. But until then, Good night and be blessed throughout your days.

A Short Trip To The Reflecting Pool

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Emerald Ripples 91121a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Cool waters flow gently from my mountain and gather in a special place on the edge of my property. I’ve come to think of this spot as my own personal reflecting pool. Now most reflecting pools are synthetic structures of cement, steel or plastic and hold the water captive. Perhaps a fountain that provides a small show at certain times of day is placed in pool and people cast in their small coins to make wishes. But my spot is nature’s handiwork. It ripples and flows. It’s alive and free to come and go as it pleases. In place of a fountain a good spring feeds a small cascade that leaps into the flow. Moss and ferns gaurd it’s boundaries and each season casts it’s tones across the surface. As the season changes from summer into fall the changing leaves with their brilliant hues show up as a blaze on the rippling shoals. And there’s always a form of life here. Sometimes I spot a Heron stalking in the shadows with the water around his legs and sharp eyes that look for the smallest disturbance in the patterns of ripples that indicate his prize is near. The rains will rearrange the stones and causes the ripples to change slightly so that I always have a new flow to explore. Songbirds gather in the shallow pools to bath and play and sometimes even the crows can be found searching the stream for shiny objects to adorn their nests. Butterflies gather on the soft edges and sip the cool water along with their precious salt. And I come here to find a little solitude and enjoy the light as it wades through the ripples.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
