Dueling Hummingbirds & A Tip On What To Do About It

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Duel 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The rain eases and a quieting falls across my mountain. It’s that moment after a rain storm when the sound of rain has faded but the birds have not yet resumed their chorus. The smell of the rain mingles with the damp earth and fragrance of the hydrangeas and permeates the humid air. The silence is broken by the beating of tiny wings as the hummingbirds emerged from hidden sanctuaries among the mountain magnolia and begin to hover around the feeder on my deck.

When I purchased a cheap hummingbird feeder back in the Spring I knew that they were territorial and often squabbled over a spot at the feeder but I didn’t realize just how antisocial they could be until I hung the second feeder in a spot where I could monitor them throughout the day. Not only are they territorial but they’re downright violent. Or so it would seem. There are many duels throughout the day. Even to the point where I feared one of them had been killed. But then I took a closer look at the small bird laying motionless on the deck. She had her feathers ruffled for sure but there was no blood. She was absolutely still and I decided to step out and see if needed to move her away from the feeder. But as soon as I opened the door she sprang to life and zoomed back into the forest. I watched as time and time again this pattern repeated except that without my interference the hummingbirds that seemed to be defeated would pop up and feed from the feeder as soon as the victor was out of sight. She’s been playing possum the whole time! I’ve not been able to dedicate enough time to individually identify each bird as an individual but there’s four different hummingbirds that visit my feeders. The dominant male seems to have claimed all the feeders for himself and while he chases one away the other 2 sneak in for a drink. Albeit not with a great amount of tolerance for each other but they do seem to begrudgingly share. So I began to listen to some podcasts and documentaries on hummingbirds and one of the things I learned is that they exhibit a very high degree of intelligence and are even capable of recognizing the people who fill the feeders. Which leaves me to believe that they’re actually using tactics to deal with the bully in the yard. And that even though he’s being a bully that dominant male has limits on how far he’ll go in his aggressive behavior. He only pins the others down and when they submit he leaves them to recover. And this makes sense because he will probably mate with one or more of the females in the season. Now to be honest I haven’t actually found an expert confirm that but I’m going to continue to observe them under the presumption that this is what’s happening.

I did also learn that the best way to reduce violence among hummingbirds at your feeder is to keep multiple feeders out of the line of sight with each other. The dominant male will select a perch where he can see as much of the area as possible but if you can find his blind spots and set up at least three feeders that will give the less dominant hummingbirds a place to feed too.

I’ve learned quite a bit now and will provide more tips and trivia in future posts as I get more photos of them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

King Of The Meadow

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “King Of The Meadow 72021a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The big blue truck calls to me in the early morning. “Today’s my day. Let’s go for a drive.” He says. So not being one to deny ol’ Blue when he’s feeling neglected I grabbed the keys and headed out to cover the normal circuit. Along the way I noticed that the mid summer blooms are really starting to come on. Among them is tall meadow rue. Also known as “King Of The Meadow”. Large clusters of star-like flowers form clouds on the edge of the quiet lane. Within them tiny solitary bees navigate through the dense flora with ease. From their perspective it must seem like entering another world. A magical place where only they can enjoy from the inside. And we are left to peer in with wonderment.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Growing Where You’re Planted

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Faith In Struggles 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The large stone guards the boundaries between asphalt and forest. The summer storm has delivered a refreshing quench to the thirsty life that clings on in the unlikely spot. Or perhaps it’s not really as unlikely as it would seem to be at first glance. The stone was placed by man. A barrier to keep the cars out of forest and the forest out of the parking lot. But the wind delivered the spores and the rains helped them grow and the moss conquered a new frontier. Now the stone holds water with the help of the moss and its symbiotic fungus. It not only holds the moss but the fungus mines that stone in enough excess that the ferns also found a home. And then the tiny seed of an elm took root as well. It’s long been said that we should grow where God plants us. This sounds like an impossible task at times but when I see the beginnings of a tree as large as an elm grow on what was bare rock just a few short years ago then I know that if he plants me in an unlikely place that he knows for sure there’s more there than meets the eye. That spot is prepared ahead of time with us in mind. No, it’s not easy at first. There’s going to be struggles and times when the rain doesn’t fall or that it falls all at once and the river threatens to wash us away. But if we just hang on one day we’ll be holding that rock in place. If the little elm can make it until it’s roots reach the soil below it is possible that it could completely envelop the rock and both will unmoved in its season.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Sunshine And Friends

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Sunshine And Friends 71721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

A splash of lightning foretells a rumble of thunder as my big blue truck breaks through the downpour. The storms provide a welcome change from the jungle like heart and humidity of the Appalachian Summer. I’ve had a chance to leave my mountain and run a few errands in the Kanawha Valley so as always I bring my camera. After the storm passes I consider the golden dome of the capitol building with its magnificent oaks and historical statues but there is no inspiration for me there today. A quick side trip to the airport leaves me just as unmoved. Perhaps a few spots that I’m aware of on the river will have a good opportunity for me. And there along the public stream access I find the Loosestrife is in bloom. And it’s being visited by a flutter of little skipper butterflies. While they’re typically territorial today I observed that they were quite cordial and happy to share the pinkish purple flowers. Maybe it’s the fresh sunshine after a storm or perhaps like the name implies Loosestrife has some sort of calming effect on them.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

The Sweet Side Of Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “The Sweet Side Of Life 71521” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old Sol glares down into the landscape and the thick air seems to cling to my face as I wander through the property. The huge hydrangea nearly froze to death a few years ago and struggled to bounce back but this year it proved that it doesn’t give up so easily. This is most bloom I’ve seen on it since we moved here in 2012. It’s sweet scent fills my home every time a door is opened. And every day I see different pollinators enjoy it’s gifts. The last few years my yard was full of butterflies and there’s still a few around but the faithful little skippers win out in numbers this year. Simple and deceptively delicate in a appearance they are always a joy to see. They have their favorite perches around the yard and always seem to return to the same spot where they can overlook their domain. They’re very territorial and will even challenge the hummingbirds on occasion. Not that birds even appear to notice when the little warriors manage to catch up with them. The skippers just bump into them and return to their posts as if they won the battle. And who could blame them for defending their sweet treasures of blue and purple?

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
