The sound of the falling rain overwhelms the forest as we shelter in the rocky outcropping surrounded by the markings of the Native Americans who dwelled here long ago. The rain is gentle and doesn’t last long. I run my fingers across the cold stone surface in an effort to find the traces of the faded lines that once told the story of a special place and the history of the people. Sadly, the public is unkind to history and some of the petroglyphs have been removed while others were overwritten by slogans and profane phrases. It seems to hold true that those who don’t respect themselves will never respect anyone else.

I’ve done the best I could to make the petroglyphs stand out by digitally tracing the lines and usinga black and white filter to obscure the paint. Some have been chipped off and stolen. Some have simply worn away. The engraving seems to have been done by pecking the sandstone with a harder stone. The texture of the lines is rough and uneven in places. Whereas some of the modern engraving is sharper and the lines are more symmetrical which is evidence of modern tools. One set of initials carved beside the glyphs is dated ’26. Presumably 1926 so we can’t really blame it all on the newer generation.
As the rain lifts my guides indicate that it’s time to visit a ghost that dwells on the forest floor. The small white plants which is more commonly referred to as Indian Pipes. They were a part of my childhood and ghost plants or ghost lilies was the names that I learned first.

The Idian Rocks Ruritan Club that owns the Indian Rocks Community park calls this area the Dancing Forest because of the growth habits of the mature Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurels that flourish here. I’ll be publishing photos specifically of the Dancing Forest at a later date but you can see one in the background of the image above.
As seen in tonight’s Feature Image the Indian Pipes/Ghost Plant completely lack chlorophyll. This means that they are completely heterotrophic. They cannot use the energy of the sun. Instead they rely on a very special relationship with the forest floor in order to survive.

As a youth I became infatuated with the pale flowers that dotted my grandfather’s property. I decided to build a terrarium that would include this unique flower. So I found a small clump placed them in an old Mason jar along with plenty of the native soil. By sundown they turned black and died. It wasn’t until after I took college botany that I learned why this specific plant would never adapt to captivity. It not only requires the right soil but would need one of two mycorrihizal fungus to feed it. Either Russula or Lactarius mushrooms and the fungus would require a tree to harvest nutrients in enough excess to supply both itself and the flowers. Typically the three part combination is linked to beech trees. Under perfect conditions one would need a terrarium that contains a mature beech in Bonsai form, one of the two fungus and viable seeds or root cuttings from the Indian Pipes/Ghost Plant. It’s not impossible but it’s far more effort and expertise than I can provide.

So this plant is best and more easily enjoyed in its natural habitat. A great place to do this is at The Indian Rocks Community Park in Craigsville West Virginia. It’s a fifty-five acre privately owned nature preserve that’s doing wonderful work to provide a sanctuary for native species, provide a wholesome place for families to enjoy and support a small community in rural West Virginia. It’s only about a twenty minute drive from Summersville Lake and a nice day trip to get away from the crowd.

Sunny days make for Sunny dispositions. Especially when that day holds no particular agenda. We all need a chance to simply exist as part of creation and fresh air in combination with sunlight is the best option. I’ve been told that it’s the little things that matter most in life. My mountains are full of little things. Things that often go unnoticed until we slow down a bit. Like the little yellow inch worm hiding in plain sight on a daisy. His camouflage is so effective that I didn’t spot him until I was processing the image. It brought to memory a poem written by a classmate in grade school. ” If you don’t see me it’s not my fault. I’m no bigger than a grain of salt. ” I wish I could remember who it was so I could give them credit. The assignment for art class was to draw a picture and write a poem about it. The poem was accompanied by single dot in the center of the page.
Now I realize that in reality inch worms are pests in gardens and they damage our plants. Most notably the cabbage loopers that roll the leaves into little cocoons for protection. But in the innocence of childhood they’re so much more. And let’s face the facts. It’s fun to watch them as they undulat their way to wherever they’re going. I remember that more than once they were gently captured and placed side by side so they could race up the tree. One inch at a time. Or if found clinging to an article of clothing that it meant God was measuring you for your robes in heaven. Even today when I spot an inch worm I have the urge to stop and watch it do it’s thing.

The big blue truck eases through the graveled county road. Recent rains have beaten down the dust and when you’re traveling a back road that means you can leave the windows down. The sweet scent of roses carries well in the humid air however this time its not one of the Native pink roses that I’ve come to know and love. It’s the invasive multiflora rose that was brought to North America in the 1880s.
At the dawn of the computer age someone stated in a humorous alteration of Newton’s third law that “For every action there’s an equal and opposite malfunction.” The sentiment definitely holds true for the multiflora rose. Because they have an aggressive root system the multiflora rose was brought in as grafting stock. Native roses are self limiting and prior to the introduction of multiflora rose this kept the ecosystem in balance. The number of wild roses were kept in check because it needed just the right conditions to flourish. But this also resulted in a challenge for those who wanted to cultivate the native roses for its larger fruit. Of for avian habit. In Victorian years roses were also a food crop as well as flower. The leaves and petals were made into various teas and beauty treatments and the fruit made into jams and teas. They were never a staple crop but there was large niche market. So the idea was to graft the native roses onto the more aggressive roots of the multiflora roses. The multiflora roses escaped from the captive conditions of the nursery and began to dominate the landscape. Because they grow so aggressively and produce more seeds than native roses they began to push out the native population. In fact I only know of a couple of places where the native roses have held their grounds locally.
Government officials didn’t help much either. They encouraged us plant the alien roses as a form of erosion control and wildlife habitat. This only made things harder on the native roses. In fact even into the mid 90s Government handbooks on soil conservation still listed multiflora rose as an endorsed species that was beneficial.
Aside from the mass produced chemicals that are effective against the spread of multiflora roses one thing that can be done to help get rid of them is to plant trees from the Juglanddacae family. These are the Walnut, Pecan and Hickory trees that exclude a substance from their roots that can kill other plants and especially roses. Of course we don’t want to do this around our ornamental roses or anywhere that we we have desired flowers but in places like forest edges and such when makes sense these trees can help fight the spread of multiflora roses and other undesirable species.

Tilly was very pleased with her home on the lake. She and George had such a great life with so much love that they had to start a family. And as soon as the kids were able she took them to her favorite cove on McKee’s Creek. She couldn’t wait to share the cool emerald water with her babies. Being children and full of curiosity the kids often drifted out of formation but she lovingly called to them with soft whistles and gentle nudges until they pretty much complied. She trained them on how to fan out and flush out the minnows for food and how to swim in a tight pack to fool predators into thinking it was only one very large duck on the surface. Among the more important skills for a lake duck was how to look cute for visitors and get a free meal. This one was easy for the kids to master. They learned how avoid the big snapping turtles that lay on the muddy bottom and that sometimes you can hitch a ride on the back of a tortoise if you’re not in a hurry. They learned that the big geese were usually friendly but to keep back when they seem cross. Shallow dives are fun and it’s important to shake your feathers dry when you come back up. One of the baby ducks wandered off to explore what he thought was a clump of reeds on the edge. They were standing so still in the breeze that it made him curious. But suddenly the reeds blinked which sent him hurrying back to Tilly. They all had a good laugh when it turned out to be an American Bitteren waiting for a crayfish to make the same mistake. The Bitteren squawked a disapproval at having his hunt disturbed before moving to a less crowded part of the shore. Tilly decided that this was enough learning for the day and gathered everyone into the grass to nap in the sun. She cuddled her children close and was very thankful for her life on the big lake.
