A Day With The Goslings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Family Swim 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

One season blends into the next. Late Spring and early Summer are days of campfires on the lake. Brightly colored tents line the shores and kayaks glide silently beneath the cliffs. The world welcomes new life nestled in the cool grass.

Slowly the shadows slip back into ether that spawned them as the morning sun extends his kingdom on the lake. The little goslings begin to stir as the new light wakes their hunger.

The clover is sweet and the tender new shoots of grass are just what a growing baby needs to grow strong.

It takes a lot of food to power the little one’s day.

Image Titled “Stay Together 52620”

Once breakfast is finally finished it’s time for goslings to have their lessons. Today Mother Goose focuses on simply staying together.

It takes a little practice. So the babies paddle around a bit practicing the turns and maintaining a formation.

And when they’re ready mom and dad take the lead and guide them throughout the realm.

The Courtship Dance Of The Crescent Butterflies

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tag Along 52620” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The cool scent of water mint rises from the creek while I ease my way closer to butterflies. Their tiny little wings flex in unison as they pump the warmth of the sun throughout their bodies. They take short hops from leaf to leaf in perfect synchronicity as if they were physically connected. I have often compared a butterfly’s flight to a dance joy or raw wild freedom but today they dance to a different tune. Today, it’s a slow dance. The song is one that plays in their hearts as they lift off together. They turn in a slow arch and dip. Once more they land in perfect alignment and pause only long enough for three slow wingbeats. They rise once again and this time the dance takes the form of a figure 8 before returning to the same spot. The male has not wavered in his devotion. He’s matched her lead in every choreographed maneuver through the air. They continue to pump their wings in perfect synchronicity and then they lift off together. This time though the dance has ended and the lovers make their exit to enjoy each other’s company in private.

Encountering Tadpoles

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tadpoles 52620a” all of the photos are my original work and are available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

There’s nothing that says you’ve had a childhood in the country like catching tadpoles. When I was a kid it was still common for teachers in Grade School ( Elementary School in some parts of the world) to lead children on a field trip to a pond or a large mud puddle to catch tadpoles and teach us about life sciences. Frogs and Toads start life as herbivores. They eat the algae that grows in the pond or in the case of tonight’s feature image the mud puddle. Contrary to popular belief not all species of tadpoles eat mosquitoes. Only the spadefoot toad and certain types of tree frogs eat mosquitoes. I suppose that means that if you bought bullfrogs or leopard frogs for your landscape pond and wondering why you still have mosquitos it’s because they are the wrong species.

Image Titled “Tadpoles 52620b”

In order for the tadpoles to survive the water hole has to be stable. It takes about 12 weeks for them to be able to survive on dry land. The main reason why transplantation of tadpoles is discouraged today is because of the possibility of transplanting waterborne weeds and diseases with them. However, I have to question how the weeds and diseases survive in a puddle that might only last a few days.

Image Titled “Pollywog 52620a” showing the size as relevant to a U.S. quarter.

As I approached the mud puddle to get a better look at the tadpoles every pebble on the ground sprung to life! No bigger than a kernel of corn the pollywogs began running from the giant. I knew that if I wanted a closeup without squishing them all I’d need to get creative. So I tossed a quarter onto the ground and attached my long lens to the camera. I realized that the pollywogs were queuing on my shadow so I moved around a bit and used my shadow to drive this little guy close to the quarter without squishing his brothers and sisters.

Aside from eating pests frogs and toads are important to medical science. In full disclosure I only skimmed the article but Tadpoles are being studied to help organ transplant patients.

Decades ago a Russian scientist discovered that certain frogs have a substance called Magainin after the Hebrew word for shield. The substance was reported to be like kryptonite against bacteria, fungi and viruses. They even developed a topical ointment that helped heal diabetic ulcers however the FDA rejected the application because there was already a product on the market that worked. However, academics still keep the research alive so maybe one day we’ll have a choice in which medications we allow into our own bodies.

As I write this article I have a Gray Tree Frog singing outside my office window and I wonder if it’s the same one from last year. I’m not sure what kind of frog or toad these tadpoles will turn into. Just judging by the size I’m guessing that they are tree frogs. The puddle was on the fringe of woodlands and wetlands so they might be leopard frogs. Either way the encounter took me back in time 40 years when my brother and I would dip mason jars into a local pond or mud puddle and discovering that it was teaming with life.

Spring Gathering & Balance

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “The Gathering 42820a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The midmorning sun beckons them with a golden smile. They seem to come out from everywhere. The come from the oaks and maples. They come from the violets and Trilliums. The sunbeams draw them like the piper’s tune. The gathering has begun. Dark cloaks are adorned with markings of each house as they lightly settle onto the earth. I sometimes wonder if they hold court while they mine the wet sand for their precious salt. Do they set the rules for territory as the sleeping blooms begin to rise from the ground and into their days of glory? Or do they simply accept what the creator of all things has provided? The cold heart of science describes aerial combat and vanquished rivals even among the most seemingly peaceful of creatures. And yet here in my lens there appears no rivals on the common ground. No grudges held over past offense and no jealousy between the broods. Nature values balance in all things.

The Jacob’s Ladder Has Bloomed

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Jacob’s Ladder 42720a” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The Sun was still shining a few days ago as I looked upwards into the steep landscape. Cardnials played in the thicket near the bench on the edge of my property. An event that I have been watching for since Christmas was now taking place. The Jacob’s Ladder that I spotted in December wad finally in bloom.

Image Titled “Jacob’s Ladder 42720b” showing a closer look at the bloom.

I have lived on this mountain for about 27 years and I’m only just now getting a little time to explore and survey the all the little niches. I’m truly amazed at the variety of life there is just outside my door. All of the common little things that I’ve seen on a daily basis but never really paid attention to seem to jump out of the background and exclaim “Check me out!” It’s really an advantage of having a little extra time this year.
