Things Are Just Ducky #10. The New Neighbors

The morning sun spread a warm smile across the Kanawha River rousing George the mallard from his roost among the oaks. He slowly opened his eyes and took in the beauty of the morning before stretching his wings and taking a deep breath. He stood up and gave himself a quick shake to smooth out his feathers and waddled his way to the edge of river. As he arrived he saw that the river was already occupied as a mated pair of ducks paddled by. Being a friendly and outgoing duck George’s first instincts was to quack out a hardy greeting but then he wondered if they would even want to be greeted? They seemed rather busy and it wouldn’t be neighborly to interrupt them. But then again, they were in the common area of the river. And if they were going to be neighbors he should at least introduce himself. George stretched his neck slightly as he peered over the weeds and decided to go for it. His webbed toes made slapping noises as he got a running start and hopped over the bank. His wings fluttered as he settled into the water. He bobbled a little and paddled out to meet his new friends. “The best people to meet are new friends.” He thought to himself as he swam. As he got closer he noticed the new couple noticing him as well but they never greeted him. Finally George spoke up and introduced himself. The couple responded and as they got to know each other George began to share the best forage spots and all about life on this particular river. As the day went on they found that they had a lot in common. As the days went on they began to help each other with the daily business of being ducks and all did better together than they ever would alone. The morning swim with the pair became a very important part of George’s life in the park. Every so often George would see his friends coming downstream and be reminded that “The best people to meet are new friends.”

Some Random Thoughts On Curiosity

The forest was soft and green as I stepped inside the tree line to gain a little quiet time. As I admire the colors and textures of my surroundings the little gray squirrel digs through the leaves and works his way closer to my position. I’m sure that he’s a little bit concerned about the human in his territory but squirrels are also naturally curious. Curiosity is how he learns about the world around him and it’s how we learn too.

I have found that some of the most fulfilling experiences begin with a question. It’s one thing for something to catch the eye but it’s something more to catch the mind and engage the sense of wonder. It doesn’t really have to be somewhere exotic or a rare item. It can be something as mundane as a colorful piece of sandstone in a parking lot. You begin to think about how the patterns formed or you might see shapes in the grain that fire the imagination.

On the other hand, you might find something that seems to be mundane on the surface but turns out to be something very special. Such as the 34.48 carat Jones Diamond that was thought to be a large piece of quartz until someone got curious enough to take it to an expert.

The most powerful question ever is “what if?” It opens the door to possibilities and leads us to new things. It’s one of driving forces behind having a real life and not just a mere existence.

For the little squirrel curiosity leads him to food, shelter and fun and of course random encounters with photographers. But it’s the driving force that keeps him moving. And us too.

The Morning Hunt

The cold North wind shakes the tall dry seedheads scattering downy seeds throughout the field. The hunter sits motionless atop his perch. His sharp eyes are fixed on the trees scanning the branches for any sign of movement. Across the field the squirrels flatten themselves out on the opposite side of the trees. In spite of hawk’s excellent vision they remain unseen. The squirrels are masters of camouflage and blend into the bark. The hawk’s focus remains unbroken as a lull in the wind falls onto the land and everything stops moving for a moment. Everything that is except for bushy tail sticking out from behind a small hickory tree. The slow nervous twitch keeps the tail moving when everything else had stopped. The hawk spreads his wings as the wind picks up again and he becomes airborne. The powerful wings carry him towards the trees with his razor sharp talons ready to strike. The mid morning sun casts the hawk’s shadow into the thin forest alerting the squirrels that their cover is blown and they scramble for new hiding places. In spite of the hawk’s speed the trees are empty by the time he reaches them. The bushy tail has disappeared deep inside the hollow of the tree it was sticking out from behind. The others have either taken higher positions or left the trees for the cover of the leaf litter on the forest floor. A few found shelter beneath the fallen logs that are scattered around the edges of the field. The hawk looks around bewildered by the sudden loss of his prey and in frustration moves on to the next hunt.

An Encounter With A Bashful Prince

There’s just enough of a drizzle to call it rain as I park the big blue truck in the middle of the quiet country lane. I saw a small group of deer on the edge of the forest about a half of a mile back as they bounded into the bushes. I can’t really blame them for being nervous about the approaching human. It’s only been a week since the close of gun season. Even though I’m in a state park with no hunting it’s bordered by private land and the deer will range both properties. I did however suppose that if I could get in the park zone that they might be a little more at ease. I was only a a couple of hundred yards inside the entrance when I spotted him in tawwhe distance. He’s young but he is a buck. Typically, the bucks will stay off to themselves and the does will stay with the herd. His first set of buttons may not have even broken through his scalp this year. He paid little attention the truck as I eased closer. Deer see moving vehicles as just another herd animal. If you’re not moving too fast it will keep track of where you are and what you’re doing but otherwise not consider you a threat. I drifted in a little closer as the buck continued to feed on the lichens and grasses under the trees. Occasionally he would put a tree between us as if it was hiding him. Then he would get curious about the truck and work his way closer again. I almost felt like he was playing a game with me. I had to wonder if he was coming in close and then jumping back to see if the truck was going to chase him. Finally he couldn’t take it anymore and decided that his best option was to make a break for the denser woods on the opposite side of the road. He crossed both lanes in a single leap and was gone.

He’s the young bashful prince of these woods today but in a few short seasons he’s going to be a huge dominant buck and the king of the park.

Between Two Worlds

A cool breeze drifts across the Kanawha River and brings with it the fresh scent of the rain. It’s odd how thst even though the crystal blue sky only shows a few scant clouds in the West that you can smell the rain before it moves in. The low angle of the sun was hitting the river just right to turn the water above the hydroelectric plant into a mirror. The cormorant was perched on his arched branch soaking in the morning sun.

Not really having a particular agenda for the day allowed me to take full advantage of the peace and quiet. I just sat there gazing onto the depths of the reflections that were only broken by the occasional fallen leaf flow down the river on its trek to the South. This is what it means to be human. To have been endowed by a creator with the ability to appreciate the wonder made by his hand. To be close enough to creation so as to see the beauty in every little grain of sand on the shore and that each one has a number but not so close that the wonderment is lost. It’s this state that gives us the drive to push deeper into the mystery. But at the same time we secretly hope that the mystery never ends. As I continue to be enthralled with colors and textures of the river and the reflections that were laid out before my eyes the movement of the bird’s wings drew my attention as he rper into the air and floated on the breeze. The one thing that we had in common at that moment was that we were both suspended between two worlds.
