A Quiet Moment Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Dutchman’s Breeches 32621a ” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The scent of the fresh earth rises up from the forest floor as I search the fallen leaves for signs of the emerging Spring. Care must be taken to not disturb any forest dwellers that hide just below the leaf layer. So I extend my monopod and poke around a bit looking for movement. I’ve never found a viper in this area but there’s a first time for everything. Just above me a chipmunk scurries to the other end of the fallen tree and disappears into the thick leaf layer.

Image Titled “Grass Spider 31721bw”.

A tiny grass spider discreetly climbs from under a nearby leaf and quietly yields right of way to the giant kneeling down in her domain. She’s only interested in remaining invisible and is soon gone. Without her kind I’d be overrun with pests and so I wait patiently for her to be one her way. This is her property too and she has the right to be here.

Looking up to the Dutchman’s Breeches I see that most of them are now open. I know that when they are here that it’s not long before the bluebells arrive. I missed them last year and I’ve been looking forward to a second chance to capture their beauty as well. Mostly I just take a moment to enjoy the outdoors and a little peace of mind.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Little Blessings Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Little Blessings” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Me feet carefully tread the soft grounds of the forest floor.  I’m surrounded by new life who’s little faces dot the moss covered hillside like earthbound stars. The empty boles now show the tiniest signs of swelling buds ready to burst forth in lush green glory. Swarms of Swallowtail Butterflies play gleefully in the breeze and a purple tinge to the forest edge tells me that the Redbud is gathering strength and will soon paint the landscape with it’s sweet bloom. The long nap of the mountains is nearly over. I’d wager that somewhere in the deep bush that new eyes open for the first time. Wobbly legs feel the earth beneath fresh hooves and will soon race the wind just because they can. And as they nap in the dense thickets new voices join the chorus of the Spring. The world is renewed once again with all these little blessings.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Reaching For The New Light

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Reaching For The Light 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Deep beneath the layers of leaves and duff the tiny roots feel the calling of the sun. The warmth of the new light kindles a refreshing of life in the long dormant forests. The little mottled leaf pushes back the dark blanket of yesterday’s glory to greet the new life of today.  But isn’t that how all of life goes? What was yesterday’s glory must be shed eventually. Certainly we need to rest beneath our accomplishments for while to recover our strength but eventually we have to leave that place in order to grow again. And although what rises above the surface is wonderful and beautiful it’s not really the core of our being. Our true self is the roots that grow unseen deep beneath the surface. The parts above are really only there to engage with the light and feed our roots.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days!

Spring Renewal

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “New Life Begins 31721” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

With the coming changes in the seasonal climate and the clocks I began my annual ritual of “Deep Sweep”. I take a few days away from the day job and cut back on my social media a little and concentrate on cleaning away things that built up a little over the winter. The whole process will take a couple of weekends and generally ends with yard work and light landscaping tasks. The idea is more than just moving the sofa and washing down the trim but it’s also symbolic way of resetting my mind. Over the past few days the clock has been reset, the natural changes in the light and the coming change in the calendar on March 20th in combination with “resetting” my living space all seem to be a sign that it’s time to reset my mind as well. So today I took a break from chores and wandered around the yard a bit. It gave me a chance to both plan out the yard work and notice the changes in my local nature. The little white flowers that we call harbinger of Spring have really taken off and exploded everywhere. I could almost set a clock by their reliability. It’s always the second week of March when they arrive in numbers. And they always last until about the first week of April when everything else begins to bloom. It’s a good time indeed to renew myself as well.

Do you have a Spring routine for resetting your mind and spirit? Let me know in the comments.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.

Waiting On The Symphony Of Spring

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Wild Ginger 33120” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Early March is a bit of a challenge for me to find photo-ops. The trees are still in the process of waking up from winter and will be for a few weeks. Most of the herbs and wildflowers are still pushing through the thick mulch of last year’s leaves. And so I turn to my archives for a fresh photo to post. There’s always a little variation in the date that the the first plants show up but tonight’s photo of wild ginger was taken March 31st of 2020. Almost a year ago! And the date of the new growth on the forest floor in like my own personal “New Year’s Day”. Complete with a grand finale of bloom exploding throughout the mountains. A couple of years ago I wrote about some scientists who convert colors to sound waves and study the harmonics of light. I can only imagine what the beautiful symphony of color the Appalachian Spring must sound like. With the pink and white dogwoods and redbud in bloom along with all the colors of every wildflower between April and June all converted into notes and compressed into one arrangement. It’s “Sweet music for the eyes” and each day I look for new signs of how close we are. Today I took a few samples from a box elder on my frontage. Each year I have to trim back the trees that stabilize the banks of my creek which means taking off the tops and allowing the stump to regrow. Today when I made a few initial cuts I found that the sap is running. It’s a major sign that changes are happening.

Good night friends and be blessed throughout your days.
