The Lady Of Mystery I Met In The Park

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Question Mark Butterfly 92920a” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

The warm autumn light filters down through the contact changing leaves as my big blue truck ebbs its way into the little round about. This was a homestead more than 50 years ago but today it’s a maintenance shed in the park. I hadn’t been there in thirty years though I had passed by it on a regular basis. Today however, I was drawn by a wondering if there was anything left of the former structure. There wasn’t, just a shed for the crews that maintain the park and campground. But my instincts bid me to linger just a little. I stopped the truck and rolled the windows down to listen for birds that might be just out of sight. As my eyes swept through the bushes and trees a dead leaf dropped from a branch and burst forth in a blaze of orange. She landed on the side of a tree as if drawn by a magnet. The body was the color and texture of moss and her fiery wings bore the hue of a turning leaf. And yet a mere moment earlier she was mottled and gray and perfectly camouflaged as a dead leaf. Had I noticed in time to focus in on the underside of the wing I may have been able to see the silvery spots that form a question mark. These are the markings that give the Question Mark Butterfly it’s name. In true “lady of mystery” fashion she flattened her wings and held them tightly against the bark.

Can we peer into the mystery and find answers to her question? The answer is yes. Yes we can. As it turns out her display of color and even her position on the tree was not for my benefit.

First, there are two types of Butterfly with almost identical markings. The Question Mark Butterfly and the Comma Butterfly. But with the punctuation mark under the wing and against the tree how do we know which one we have? Both butterflies have 3 dots near the edge of the forewing but only the Question Mark Butterfly has the fourth elongated mark on the outside. The Comma Butterfly also lacks the dot of a question mark on the silvery spots underneath.

The odd position she landed on the tree wasn’t by chance. The female Question Mark Butterfly displays herself in this inverted position in order to attract a mate. And unlike other butterflies she does not lay her eggs directly onto a host plant. Her children will have to go look for their own food as soon as they hatch. Fortunately for the Question Mark Butterfly children their diets are not as limited as other butterflies and they have a few more options on menu.

After a few minutes of of trying to get just the right photos I did decide to back off and allow her to continue trying to get her boyfriend’s attention. Three is a crowd and I want more butterflies in this park next year.

The Day Confetti Came To Life

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Sulphur Butterfly And Ironweed 90820” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The September sun rides along the distant ridge top as the late summer breeze trickles over the hills. The old pasture which once would have been full of clover now pops with blue, purple pink and yellow. The late season flowers sprinkle the field making it look as though God allowed nature to have a confetti party to celebrate the end of summer. But not all of pieces appear to contently lay in the green grass. A tiny speck of yellow lifts itself from the groups and gives itself to the mercy of the gentle September wind. The wings open to reveal the sulphur butterfly. The little Sulphur Butterfly rides the breeze like a master surfer and is delivered to the ironweed. Amid the bright purple flowers he finds the gift that God had prepared ahead of time. And everything is in place.

Visited By A Flying Lobster

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “September Visitor 90720” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Amid the the rain kissed leaves and blooms the flight pattern catches and holds my eye. I’ve been watching out for a chance to photograph a ruby throated hummingbird but he’s very camera shy and vanishes into the forest when he feels my gaze. The hummingbird continues to elude me. However, the visitor who buzzed into view is just as special in its own way.

Outsiders to the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia would swear that I had been hitting the still if I told them that I was visited by a flying lobster but that’s what we call them. The articulated tail which helps it hover really resembles the tail of a lobster. I suppose that some of the old timers had a lot fun at the expense of those who braved the muddy trails into wild mountains with tales of a crustacean that swims through the air. Of course the rest of North America knows it as the Snowberry Clearwing Moth. The unusual thing is that this moth is active in the day and into the night. It’s completely enthralled with the sweet purple flowers of the tall ironweed. It circles each cluster grooming the flowers with powerful beat of it’s wings. In response the flowers sweeten their nectar to ensure that the moth continues to feed and catch more pollen in its fur. The field is covered in ironweed and it’s really easy to see why my ancestors envisioned the moth as a lobster flying through the coral. The bees and butterflies also swarm around the foliage but there’s only one flying lobster. It’s not rare, only unique.

The Tiny Guardian

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Tiny Guardian 61520” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

The little skipper butterflies would seem to be the most benevolent creatures in the Appalachian Mountains.  They have no claws, no stinger and their mouths are nothing more than tubes to sip nectar through.  But over the past few days I’ve noticed that one has taken up residence on my porch.  He’s claimed everything within a few feet to be his and his alone. And he defends his claim fearlessly! It started when I noticed him perched on one of the posts and that he seemed to continue to return to the same spot several times per day.  Then I noticed a large Tiger Swallowtail interested in the primrose growing up near my carport.  The little skipper sprung into action and few a sortie around the primrose battering the Swallowtail with its wings. The Swallowtail is much larger but the agile little skipper kept up his relentless pursuit into forest and soon returned victorious. Then another skipper made its approach to the treasured flower and was also quickly vanquished. The little guy even executed successful counterattacks on paper wasps and mud daubers throughout the day. He’s quite the warrior! And the I spotted another skipper leisurely feeding on the primrose. The first skipper didn’t seem to mind and actually joined the second on the flowers.  It was at that point I realized what was going on.  He was guarding that food source for her. This was his mate. For the rest of the day they shared the nectar and occasionally the post that functioned as his command center.  I’m certain that she’s going to lay her eggs on the hog peanut vine that I discovered a while back and ensure that I have a plentiful supply of tiny little skipper butterflies in the future.  They say that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.  The little skipper butterfly reminded me of that today when he took on two nests of wasps and won even though he’s seemingly unarmed.

Joy On Wings

Hello Friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Simple Blessings 80420” and is available for purchase by following the instructions at the bottom of the article.

Joy travels on wings of ebony and blue. Nimbly dodging the twigs and thorns she makes her way through the shrubs.

She avoids the silken threads with the greatest skill and with delicate grace rises above her troubles.

Her existence is an aerial dance through the landscape and her ultimate expression of life.

I sometimes wonder what the Lord was thinking at her creation.

It shall be a humble worm.

It shall be regeneration and change.

It shall be rebirth in beautiful living color.

It shall be swift.

It shall be the sweetness on a balmy breeze.

It shall be innocence.

It shall be loved and it shall be an expression of my joy.

Life is meant to be all these things and more. Find your joy and live in it.
