A Bright Spot In My Day

Hello Friends! Tonight’s Feature Image is titled “Rust & Reclamation 100620cs” and is available for purchase by clicking the thumbnail and reaching out to me on the contact page.

Old weathered fence posts, rusted wire and wildflowers hold a special place in my heart. The elements of a world engulfed in the flow of time slowly returns to their raw forms. The steel wire was once black sand rich in iron oxide. The fence posts in their raw from grew from the rich humus to which they return. But lest we think that all is decay and entropy time also brings renewal. The flowers provide a bright spot. All along the old fence the tiny asters bloom. The old rusted wire fence will provide shelter from the groomers blades and support against the high winds as they twist their way up through woven wires. They have also been observing the flow of time. Waiting for the days when rain is gentle and sun is not too hot. The tiny flowers will last late into the season and a few will still bloom throughout the mild winter in my little slice of Appalachia. Honeybees do not hibernate and so the scant blooms will be important as survival food for those days that are warm enough for bees to fly. In my own yard I still had a handful of asters in bloom when the first Spring Beauties and crocus opened. So for me the asters symbolize hope in the promise that God will have what I need when I need it.

There was a time on planet earth when sweat equity had real value. When fortunes were forged from iron and steel and the sheer will of a dedicated soul. When man was the master of his machine and he poured his spirit into the work. In those days he sew his sweat into the soil and reap gold. The good life smelled like petroleum and livestock and freshly opened ground. When dirt under the fingernail was the mark of excellence and books enriched the heart. Things made in those days were more than a commodity. They were a piece of someone’s life. A little part of the producer was embedded into the fabric of the creation. The meat on table, the hay that fed the cow and tractors that made it possible to provide a living all carried the essence of those who did the work. In such ways families were bound to each other and a healthy community was all made one blood. We can still have that connection with each other today. All we need to do is understand the value we impart to each other.

Fences

It’s surprising how much good you can do for yourself just checking the fences. Thin lines of steel charged with energy that keep your livestock in their places seem to require vigilance. As a child my grandfather would sometimes just get into his truck and tune the AM radio station to the right channel an listen to the pulsating clicks of the fence charger creating a rhythmic static pattern in the signal. It was a way of making sure that the charger was working. If there’s no clicks on the radio then that means that the cattle could get out. Some people think that it’s the barbs that keep the cattle in but I’ve watched cows use the wire as a back scratcher and not be harmed. Only when the fence has a good charge does it really work and even then they might push their way through if the clover on the other side is sweet enough. But I digress. The normal way to check the fence was to walk along with a tester and every so many paces you stick a probe into the ground and hang a light on the wire. If there’s power on the wire the light will blink. Doing it this way also gives you a chance to check for places where the fence might be saggy. Cows aren’t great jumpers but they can jump. But in the process they can become tangled up in wire and if you cow breaks a leg it’s a financial loss.

Depending on the size of the land there are miles to be walked. Certainly there’s a benefit for physical health but there’s also a huge benefit for mind and spirit. It gets you out away from the outside world and because the task isn’t really demanding you find yourself sorting through thoughts that you only partially resolved earlier. Often I would hear my grandfather singing hymns as he walked the fence with the hemp baling twin that he saved from every square bale of hay hanging out of his back pocket. He kinda resembled a rooster which was amusing because his nickname in the community was “Banty Rooster”. There were times when I was a kid that I would practice walking quiet and try to remain unseen. I figured that if I could stay hidden from people that I would be a better hunter when I old enough. A few times I was able to spot my grandfather walking a fence line I was able to creep through the woods and follow him unseen. I remember one time that I caught him praying as he walked. He was talking to God as if God was walking right there with him and they were having a conversation. Later in life I’ve found myself doing the very same thing. Today I don’t live on the farm and I don’t have a fence to maintain but I do catch myself talking to God as if God was walking right there with me. Those kind of prayers seem to have the most beneficial effects on my life. Walking the fence has become a metaphor for unplugging and existing in my natural state of being. It opens up the real me that we all have and that we keep tucked away in order to function in the outside world. That inner person who cries for release and desires nothing more than to be able to be a human being instead of a human doing. I often wonder how many of society’s horrible problems would simply vanish if we dropped our masks and became who we were created to be. In some ways we are the ones behind the fences. Remember that cow that would push through the electric fence if the clover on the other side was sweet enough? It’s right there in front of us now. And the only thing that stands between ourselves and having our desires is the fear of the fence we built ourselves.

Being Sunshine

Because you spoke I was encouraged.

Because you acted my life improved.

Because you cared I learned my value.

It’s the light inside you that warms the world around you.

The value of good will should never be discounted in any life. When you read the short poem above what did you picture in your mind? I’m guessing that most people had the image of a young couple. Perhaps on a special day. Or was it an older couple in their twilight years when every minute counts and the need to express love and adoration for each other while they’re still together is prominent. But what if these words were spoken to a pastor who’d spent his life serving a congregation. Let’s add one more perspective. How about we say these words to a neighbor who was always there when the chips were down? What if we become that neighbor. You see, there are many types of love. But the actions are simple. It’s that opportunity to show that person that they’re accepted and that they belong that makes a difference in their life.

Changing The World. ( An observation of action in time )

Hello friends! Tonight’s feature image is titled “Muddelty Creek Barn 11220 SV” and is available for purchase by the instructions at the bottom of the article.

When I first started documenting the demise of the old barn on Muddelty Creek she still had most of her roof. Now the winds have claimed the rusted tin that once was her crowning glory. The straight lines of her wooden ribs would have been crafted with loving care but now they’re twisted broken.

Even so, she fights to remain standing and rebuffs the gales of winter. The drive to exist renews her strength in spite of what the eye sees. But time will eventually be winner and one day only the footprint will remain.

In a comment to Tea With Jennifer on her post Living Life Well I mentioned the question “What have you done with your dash?”

The story goes that on your memorial there will be two dates. The day you were born and the day God calls you home. These dates are separated by a – that represents all the days in between. And that’s the most important part. That where you lived. All of the love, all of the good times and all of the struggles, everything is in that dash. What it means is up to you. As long as you have breath you are creating the future and you have a purpose. An individual might not be a super hero and save the world but you’re a super hero to someone. You might not leap tall buildings in a single bound but if you have a word of encouragement to share you might lift someone else over the top. The world is moved bit by bit and moment by moment by the many hands that do what they can as the opportunity arises.

So what have you done with your dash? You changed the world and you are changing the world still. But the direction of that change is up to you.
